Introduction to Macintosh expansion cards

NuBus

The NuBus was originally developed at MIT in 1987 as a part of the NuMachine workstation project. It was a 32-bit parallel computer bus with plug'n'play capabilities. In order to select the proper device driver, NuBus included an ID scheme that allowed the cards to identify themselves to the host computer during startup. There are 2 known sub-standards: • NuBus (IEEE 1196): - release date: 1987 - physical format: standard 96-pin three-row connector - technical data: system running on a 10 MHz clock for a maximum burst throughput of 40 MB/s and average speeds of 10 to 20 MB/s. • NuBus 90: - release date: 1990 - physical format: standard 96-pin three-row connector - technical data: increased the clock rate to 20 MHz for better throughput, burst increasing to about 70 MB/s, and average to about 30 MB/s. Wikipedia - Nubus

PDS (processor direct slot)

The PDS (processor direct slot) was Apple's standardized connector derivated from the 68020/030/040 processor bus (direct access to signal pins on the CPU). Such limiting its number to not more than 1 slot and making it CPU-specific. Wikipedia - Processor Direct Slot

PCI

Apple adopted PCI for professional Power Macintosh computers (replacing NuBus) in mid-1995, and the consumer Performa product line (replacing LC PDS) in mid-1996. The 64-bit version of plain PCI remained rare in practice though, although it was used for example by all (post-iMac) G3 and G4 Power Macintosh computers. • PCI 2.0: - release date: 1993 Wikipedia - Conventional PCI
