You have to prevent a destruction of such a lovely place as Versailles, where you search for bomb and the person, who want to activate it. I tested Versailles on Power Mac G4 1.25 Ghz mirror door 2003 in classic environment of mac os x 10.4.11 and game will not play because the screen will not play but game will play mac os 9.2.2 native booted. This game also works in Virtual PC in windows and and Boxer in DOS with both Toast CD mounted. Also this game will play in latest version scummvm 2.01 or later and this game is supported on macintosh and windows. But scummvm 2.00 will not play the game because it not supported. This ISO Hybrid CD VASAIL_1.ISO and VASAILL_2.ISO download was macintosh and windows will also play in DOS.

The Win copy (English hybrid disk) works great under Virtual PC 6 on my G4 (leopard 10.5.8) running Windows 98SE. The sound and excellent music score, plus cursor control are all working OK.

Running it under Windows virtualization may be the better choice for getting this to work under emulation.

Thank you, Idéfix, for your understanding and for this new addition. I look forward to trying it out, but will need to get some suitable hardware to do so, I think. It looks as tho' Basilisk and Sheepshaver will not do the game justice.

The "tap-repeatedly" review linked up in the description makes me want to play it all the more. Great stuff.

I have uploaded the disc images of the original French language version, Versailles: Complot à la cour du Roi Soleil. Thanks to MikeTomTom and MacTouch for time spent trying to fix emulation issues with that game.

ISO SHA1 checksum CD #1 = 1aef36f0fe6b5e39553e0538284842fa95c74d29
ISO SHA1 checksum CD #2 = ff96bd561eed4325d1df5bab99d6ec105a30150e

These files are coming from our small aquatic hematophagous friends, greatly appreciated for their medicinal virtues.

No reason to think that they have been somewhat altered. Dates of mounted images and internal folders are all from early october 1996 and test with Disinfectant 3.7.1 is negative.

Well, happy to know that this starting conflict is closed ! Smile I prefer not interfere when it is the case. I'm really uncomfortable with this kind of situation, especially when I'm a little concerned by the discussion. Now, I wish you again a happy new year to you two with kindness. Wink I'm ready to speak in French via our guestbooks.

So, now, I have to tell you about this game. I have tested it like you can guess & I have the same issues. Cryo's games using this technology "Omni 3D" seem to be having all this same symptom "uncontrollable mouse cursor". For example, the game Egypt. You can find the same note on the compatibility field. I'm afraid this is a graphical issue. I believe these games works only on real Macs. As you may (or not) know, emulators are incompatible in some ways with graphics. I would say that they can't emulate correctly hardware graphics or at least, they don't. That's why some old games here can't run inside an emulator or doesn't work as expected, even if graphics driver are already installed or not. I hope this will change one day but for the moment, I can't find another explanation.

Understand. Case Closed.

I am not a troublemaker. Just a little dog which belongs to Obélix and living in a small Gaul village surrounded by Roman military camps. Sometimes I growl and sometimes I bite. But I am usually happy and kind.

I would like to conclude this discussion with a citation by one our most famous poet: «Quand on touche à ma langue, je mords.» (Claude Péloquin, 1942-2018). It means litteraly: when somebody touch my tongue, I bite. There is an untranslatable wordplay in it. In French, the same word ("langue") means "tongue" and "language".

Don't be unfair with me, Mr TomTom.

@Idéfix: Hardly. On the contrary, I was simply pointing out a fact. There is a time and place for typing content in another language that differs from the site's lingua franca.

I have no issue with your uploads containing both English and French text to describe their content. That has been and is, a very good thing.

It's the "user comments" area where I draw a distinction. User comments need to be mostly in the common language of the Garden. For example; If a person who knew no English asked a question in French about some thing or another, to which you respond in kind, then that would be fine. But not when regular members who do comprehend English, do not.

If you wish to have discourse with Garden members in French only, then I recommend that you do so via their and your own guestbooks. If any Garden member wants to respond in kind to you, he/she would do the same. I suggest that you use your guestbooks for this and make use of it as you see fit.

Don't be unfair with me, Mr TomTom. I am here regularly since mid-October 2018 and I have already done 60 uploads, 3 forum articles and a dozen of commentaries to the Garden. All my uploads were done only in English (or strictly bilingual English-French), all my forum articles were only in English and MOST of my commentaries were also in English. Finally, I have only written three (3) small commentaries in French addressed to MacTouch. That's all.

Please, don't act like my so-called fellow Anglo-Canadians citizens. I understand that you probably don't know anything about French Canada but keep in mind that our cultural resilience as its roots in History. Resistance to English assimilation is an important part of our culture that explain some of our behaviours, like spontaneously speaking French between Québécois.

...are they like the Voldemort of abandonware? "Those Who Cannot Be Named"

@Idéfix: No - more like the "leeches", MacTouch mentions in another thread. You can get some idea for yourself, here and here.

And I do appreciate the input and vast knowledge that you bring into the Garden. Only, it should be available to the widest possible audience when shared in the common forum.

I also look forward to playing this game in it's native French language. I will need to find a Mac running a native classic Mac OS first tho', I think. I may even try the Win version when I get a chance, just to see if it performs any better or worse.

I have not tested this game yet as I can't download large files from their site. And for some reasons, I don't want to create an account over there. However, I know they have a very largest catalog of softwares than we have. One day, I would like to dress a list of these softwares for grab from them by someone here.
I have uploaded here only the software less than 100 MB, but I have not found any problem. Sometimes, softwares have been modified by them just for a kind of watermark or a reference to their site. Always, I am scanning softwares by an antivirus before uploading here and if I can find the same software on the web archive, I would prefer that instead of downloading from their very limited site.

"if you are concerned about that "other site's" quality of media"

Hum, are they like the Voldemort of abandonware? "Those Who Cannot Be Named" Wink

Until now, I have no reason to doubt about the quality of these files downloaded from them but I know that they have had some ethical issues lately and still asking to people to pay for unlimited downloading access. Anyway, I will double-check just in case.

Thanks for your test, Mr TomTom. If there is no way to make this game playable in emulation, I will just upload the files on this page and that's all. No screenshot.

@Idéfix: I don't know if MacTouch has tested this game under emulation as yet, but I have tried it briefly on Basilisk II. My findings so far are the same as yours, it is unplayable for me, because of the sound issues and an uncontrollable mouse cursor.

I even tried the enclosed "ReadMe" doc's recommendation of moving sound files into the same folder as the Versailles folder if the sound playback is choppy

Improving Sound Playback:
In some case, the animated sequenses before each level may have sound problems
(interrupted synchronisation).
To avoid this, you can copy the files from the folder "Datas_V:sc_trans" of each CD to the
"Versailles Folder" located on your hard drive.

In which case, it is a known issue to the creators, that sound is a problem even on actual hardware.

Doing as they suggested increased the game size on the HD to more than 200MB. But to no avail, in fact it seemed to play even more choppy afterwards.

Also, if you are concerned about that "other site's" quality of media, then you should check for yourself before using or re-uploading them to here or elsewhere. If an item appears to be modified then it's up to your discretion if you want to continue using it. This applies to anything downloaded from here also, of course.

Bonjour M. MacTouch

Well, in the meanwhile, I've uploaded the manual. It's in English, French & German, so, no worries. Smile
I have added also some screenshots from the original one. Let me know if other useful items are needed. I can add other screenshots...

Anyway, could you please add the version français?

Idéfix's picture
by Idéfix - 2018, December 31 - 4:50am

I have just tried the original French version of the game in my usual emulators (Basilisk II for MacOSX w/System 7.5.5 & SheepShaver for MacOSX w/MacOS 9.0.4) and results are really not satisfying. The most important issue is that it is nearly impossible to control the cursor with the mouse in both emulators (even with Omni3D set at slowest speed) making the game totally unplayable for now. Furthermore, sound is awful (echo?) in Basilisk despite the fact that Sound Manager 3.1 was already installed in the OS. Anybody has an idea how to fix these issues?
