Guides on emulating older games

Released February 15, 2008. This is the original version for OS X 10.4. An updated version for modern Mac systems does exist and requires OS X 10.9.5 (but was unfortunately removed from sale December 31, 2018).

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a remake of the original Tomb Raider with a technically more advanced graphics engine. It has the same basic storyline, though some cutscenes and much of the dialogue within have been expanded or modified in other ways. Locations correspond to those of the original version and are accessed in the same order, but have been re-designed with different layouts and mostly completely different puzzles which allow implementation of new moves such as swinging on ropes and using a grappling hook at specific points. (MobyGames)

The game plays in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian.

Downloads 1–7 are the parts of a zipped archive of the game DVD. To reassemble the complete DVD image, place all the parts in the one folder, then drag the .001 file to The Unarchiver. This will join all the parts and unzip the archive. There are other methods to do this, but this one is as good as any.

Download 8 : NoDVD patch.

Download 9 : game demo (Peru level).

The latest game in the series, called Shadow of the Tomb Raider, requires Mac OS X 10.15 or higher. It can be purchased from Feral along with all previously downloadable content.

Architecture: x86 (Intel:Mac)

1.8 GHz Intel Mac
Mac OS X 10.4
512 MB RAM
4 GB hard drive space
3D graphics card with 64 MB VRAM

The Lego games are the odd exception though... with only Lego Star Wars 1 and 2 being PowerPC compatible. Why they didn’t at least make Indiana Jones 1 and Batman 1 Universal binary we’ll never know.

Unfortunately, you'll have to stick to Mojave to play these games due to them being 32-bit.
Feral pulled all sales of 32-bit games after the end of 2018, so this place is the next best thing.

Where can I buy a steam-key for it?
I own the DVD-Version, but It's more handy to play the steam-version.
This is also the same case for TR-Underworld.

One last note on the series:
Feral also ported the next game in the series, Underworld; but it took until June 2012 to do so - though it is compatible with 10.6.8. We'll get this port in 2022.

Incidentally, it seems Feral still had at least some faith in the PowerPC lineup for a little longer; seeing as their final PowerPC game was Rome: Total War in February 2010. (though it did not start out that way, according to IMG, PowerPC support arrived in patch 1.1 that July)

We'll probably see that game uploaded early on next year.

Now that's interesting. Do you know which website URL such an update was supposed to get distributed under?

Edit: I discovered this attempt actually took place, but then the developers gave up:

Some time ago, we announced that we would be bringing Tomb Raider Anniversary to PowerPC Macs. Unfortunately we will not be able to keep this promise. If you have been waiting for the PowerPC version of Tomb Raider Anniversary, please accept this apology.

We have been caught between the increasing difficulty and cost of supporting modern games on PowerPC Macs, and the diminishing number of people who are using them. In summary it is technically possible, but expensive; in this case so expensive that it is not financially feasible.

What a shame, since all G5s would have been able to handle it just fine (not to mention the Quad), and top-of-the-line processor-upgraded G4s.

According to both the FAQ document and some Mac gaming websites, a universal binary seemed to be in the pipelines for a later update. Tragically, it seems no such update existed or was lost to time.

You are totally right, that is why I said "An updated version of this Mac game for modern OS X systems ...", this is just to say that if you have a modern Mac and want to play this game you can still buy it on Steam if you want to support the developers. Furthermore, Steam doesn't even run anymore on OS X < 10.11 (However, I can still run it under 10.6.8 as I have an outdated from 2015).

It is unbuyable for Intel OS X 10.4 ~ 10.8, as far as Steam is concerned.

An updated version of this Mac game for modern OS X systems can still be purchased from Steam (with Steam DRM however, but I have it in my library); proof here

The fact that the Mac version is unlisted on the Steam website doesn't mean that you can't buy it. Indeed, the game sold on Steam contains the Mac version in its public depot, meaning that if you buy it, the Mac version will quietly appears in your library.

Particularly, the Steam Mac version appeared in November 2015 and was still listed as of April 2018 as you can see here
It seems to be an updated version of this one, with upgraded system requirements :

"Minimum requirements (Steam updated version)

OS: 10.9.5
Processor: 1.8 GHz
Graphics: 256 MB
Hard Disk: 5 GB
Input: Keyboard & Mouse

The following graphics cards are not supported: ATI X1xxx series and Intel GMA series."
