Guides on emulating older games

The story focuses on the activities of the three species in a part of the Milky Way known as the Koprulu Sector. Millennia before any of the events of the games, a species known as the Xel'Naga genetically engineered the Protoss and later the Zerg in attempts to create pure beings. These experiments backfire and the Xel'Naga are largely destroyed by the Zerg.[6] Centuries before the beginning of StarCraft in 2499, the hardline international government of Earth, the United Earth Directorate (UED), commissions a colonization program as part of a solution to overpopulation. However, the computers automating the colony ships malfunction, propelling the Terran colonists far off course to the edge of Protoss space. Out of contact with Earth, they form various factions to maintain their interests. Intrigued by the behavior and mentality of the Terrans, the Protoss remain hidden to examine the humans, while protecting them from other threats without their knowledge. However, the Zerg target the Terrans for assimilation to harness their psionic potential, forcing the Protoss to destroy tainted Terran colonies to contain the Zerg infestation.

StarCraft begins just days after the first of these attacks, where the predominant Terran government, the Confederacy of Man, falls into a state of panic as it comes under attack by both the Zerg and the Protoss, in addition to increasing rebel activity led by Arcturus Mengsk against its rule. The Confederacy eventually succumbs to Mengsk's rebels when they use Confederate technology to lure the Zerg into attacking the Confederate capital, Tarsonis. In the consequent power vacuum, Mengsk crowns himself emperor of a new Terran Dominion. However, during the assault on Tarsonis, Mengsk allows the Zerg to capture and infest his psychic second-in-command, Sarah Kerrigan. This betrayal prompts Mengsk's other commander, Jim Raynor, to desert him with a small army. Having retreated with Kerrigan to their primary hive clusters, the Zerg are assaulted by Protoss forces commanded by Tassadar and the dark templar Zeratul. Through assassinating a Zerg cerebrate, Zeratul inadvertently allows the Overmind to learn the location of the Protoss homeworld, Aiur. The Overmind quickly launches an invasion to assimilate the Protoss and gain genetic perfection. Pursued by his own people as a heretic for siding with the dark templar, Tassadar returns with Zeratul to Aiur and with the assistance of Raynor and the templar Fenix, Tassadar launches an attack on the Overmind and ultimately sacrifices himself to kill the creature.

I'm not able to get this running in 9.2.2 on a Pismo. Starcraft just quits as soon as the game launches. Tried all the updates, tried it with Brood War, tried extensions/CPs disabled; nothing seem to work. Just instantly quits as soon a the game boots. Anyone run into this?

edit: got it working! it was trying to boot with 2-button mouse settings active for some reason. held down the option key while the game launched and turned that off and presto, it works in mac classic!

Now, this game is free & can be downloaded directly on Blizzard's website :

However, I have not tested the compatibility yet...

[EDIT] It seems that it requires Yosemite at least. More infos on this page :

Fortunatly, we have this page for olds machines. Smile

Starcraft and Brood war in os x will play without CD inserted in the computer. The both CD has archives. Just copy the archives from both CD. You had to put Brood war & Starcraft archive in Starcraft Files folder. The game will play without CD in os x only but mac os 9 the game will ask for CD.
Brood War Archive is 545.4 MB of hard drive.
Starcraft archive is 578.8 MB of hard drive.
I found this on Blizzard website.

In my opinion, only the author of these pages "StarCraft and Brood War For Classic MacOS" & "StarCraft Battle Chest" could give you (or not) this responsability. As I say it before, the first page is useful to "Classic/Mac OS 9" users, while the second is useful to "PowerPC/Intel OS X" (Snow Leopard at last) users. The only page with duplications is "StarCraft" page. If you want to change that, you must contact another person (the original author). But this page was created a lot of months ago. And so, I don't know if you'll arrive to contact him (Kitchen2010)... Also, I don't know what is your motives. Even if there is confusion, is it very important ? For my part, I won't modify anything (except in comments) cause it's not my responsability. I'm a single user, like you, no ?

Hmm...Would it be ok with you guys if I just removed the redundancies then? Also the "Battle Chest" is basically just the deluxe edition (base game, DLCs, prima guide, ect. all in one box), correct?

@MacTouch: Thank you for your thoughtful post regarding this page's content & moving files.

In response to 3371-Alpha: Due to the nature of the engine driving this site; At present the only way a file can be moved is to download it and then re-up it to another location. For large files this can be both time and bandwidth consuming. Of course, if you are the original uploader, you may only need to re-up a file if you have kept the original.

So in all, moving archived files once they are in place to merge with existing pages, is not easily resolved, requiring time, effort & a desire to do so.

It is easier to place a "See also" note & link to related pages in the description field above.

[Edit] Which is very well. However, on (actually) inspecting the other Starcraft page I now see a lot of duplication. This generally means, sorting out which is the same (regardless of any file-name differences), DL & Re-upping the differences and removing one of the pages. ... adding this to dupes page for action.

Well, I've already seen your post on "StarCraft". I understand your opinion and could be agreed. But, first, the two pages were created by differents persons. Second, I don't know how it is possible to merge them in only one or in others words, how to delete a page (if it is possible). Third, although it is possible to remove certains items uploaded there, I'm not going to ask authors of the pages the permission to delete their work & even less do it myself without permissions. But, if you want, you can ask the author of this page to know his point of view... Instead, the os x native version was not only an optional update, it was a must for Power PC who can't run os 9 fifthen years ago!

@mactouch ah, it's unfortunate they never introduced a osx native version. I do have one other thing to ask. I know I've asked this on the forums as well, but I feel like the "StarCraft" & "StarCraft and Brood War for Classic MacOS" should be merged into a single page as there was only ever one version of StarCraft for mac released. StarCraft was originally released for the classic Mac OS and the osx native version was merely an optional update. I feel this will confuse new users. What are your thoughts? And where should I go for permission to have this done?

Happy to learn that it works for you too ! For StarEdit, I haven't found it for os x. Sorry. It seems that Blizzard never create a native version. They have updated the game to run on PowerPC platforms under os x (last version supported, Snow Leopard), but they let StarEdit in classic mac version... Now, the game is only proposed for PC. In fact, there is a Mac Installer located with the UK & US PC StarCraft version, but it only works with the same versions of os x (and without StarEdit, of course).

@mactouch thanks! Worked pretty well. One other question, Do you know if there's an osx native version of StarEdit?

You can use this link to create a disk image of StarCraft & BroodWar inside of SheepShaver. Then, you can mount the new images created always with this utility, install the game, and play. This works for me, so... I hope you'll enjoy.

@sfp1954 you guys wouldn't happen to have some kind of cracked installer, would you?

by sfp1954 - 2016, April 20 - 2:03am

You probably need to burn a physical copy of the disk.
Some installers check for a physical copy of the CD in the CD drive.
Disk images do not work in that case.

Anyone know how to make this install in SheepShaver? Keeps telling me to "make sure the CD is in the drive before running the installer" even though I already have it mounted in the drives list.

I have just uploaded the 1.07 updater. I have not tried it. If it needs 1.06 first, then I can provide that too.
