Lode Runner is the classic Apple ][ gold-gathering platformer. This is the original monochrome Mac port from 1984, which still works except that clicking in the main window crashes the game under some OS versions (but you can still play with keyboard control - IJKL to move, UO or SF to dig, D or any other non-playing key to stop). Also includes the levels from 'Championship Lode Runner' and 'Revenge of Lode Runner', which are much more challenging.
Level hint guide can be found at: http://www.reocities.com/SoHo/Exhibit/2762/loderunner/main.htm
Also in this series: Lode Runner: The Legend Returns, Lode Runner On-Line: The Mad Monks' Revenge, Lode Runner 2
A note about the downloads available from above:
When running on later 68k and/or PowerPC based Macintosh models, keep mouse inside game window. v1.2 image in download is MFS and can be loaded on 128k or 512k Macs running any System version. v1.0 image is HFS.
The largest download is a flux-based disk image (A2R) captured with an Applesauce FDC. Its contents can be viewed using the Applesauce client software.
The WOZ disk image is a derivation of the A2R disk image. It is suitable for writing back to another floppy disk using an Applesauce FDC. Future emulators will also be able to make use of this image.
Comments
Mine Runner Classic is a knock-off of LodeRunner for iOS devices. I haven't tried it yet - it is free. From the screenshots, the controls look like they'll get in the way on smaller iPhone and iPod Touch devices, but look better positioned on the bigger iPad.
Most helpful is it, if this file comes as a Disk Copy disk image. When using Mac OS 7 at the old Macintosh end, use Disk Copy version 6.3 to open the disk image file as if you were using hard disk drives.
The WOZ-format disk image I added to this archive can be written back to another floppy disk with an Applesauce FDC. I verified playability with a 4-megabyte Macintosh Plus.
@Mastergeko4: Basilisk II Build 142 is one solution.
Much depends on the computers you own. Best start a a new thread about getting vintage games onto vintage Macs. Discussing all that here blows up this game page too much.
How do I get this game on my old Macintosh Classic?
Thanks!
Yep !
I own a Macintosh Classic from 1991 running system 6. will this work on it?
I managed to make a working copy of the original floppy disk by making a bit copy with Copy II Mac.
Amazing the Finder would not make the copy.
The third image worked, but the contents was not the same as the original floppy disk. I was unable to convert the DC 6 image to a DC 4 image on my Quadra.
Feel free to try the third DL. Its a DC 4.2 image made from DC 6.2.
May work or not.
I might be able to create a real DC 4.2 image, but someone with a vintage Mac could do that easier.
It helped, version 1.2 duplicated fine (on my SE with DiskCopy 4.2 and System 6.0.5) but the 1.0 disk image would not open in DiskCopy 4.2 or DiskDup+.
DiskCopy 6 could recognize the file format (version 1.0) but as expected it would not mount or duplicate MFS format (tested on Quadra 950 with system 7.6.1).
Can you convert the 1.0 image to DiskCompy 4.2 format and upload it?
SIT.HQX added. Hoping this will help.
On my side the 1.0 file runs fine in MiniVMac and SheepShaver.
The hacked 1.2 is bootable and playable in MiniVMac, DiskCopy 6 rejects it due to an unexpected EOF because of its MFS file system. Not a real surprise, MFS support was dropped in 6.0.8 IIRC.
For making floppies, DiskDup+ on a vintage Mac would be my first try.
I have a original Lode Runner but the floppy disk has a read error. I tried to download the ZIP file to make a new floppy of v1.0, but the disk image file does not work.
Can someone please upload it as .hqx because I think the ZIP format destroys the old 68k files.
Anyone has some input on the subject?
Hours and hours of my childhood dedicated to this game. I thinks it's the first game I ever played with a level editor.
Updated Compatibility bit to add that with the v1.2 image (thanks Gael!) you can now load this image on MFS Macs as early as System 1. v1.0 image is HFS and is probably limited to 3.2 with HD20 INIT or higher. This seems backwards, but is likely just an artifact of how these images were created.
Thanks, Gaël, nice changings!
Added v1.2 disk image (cracked by Gael) to the former v1.0 image.
