There appears to be a fix to the AGI 16 colour issue. Larry 1 with AGI 2.06 works in 16 colours, on Basilisk II with some issues, works without errors on my LC 475 in 24bit mode. So keep an eye out for 2.x releases, only the interpreter seems to have changed (1991 date stamp), the other files and game version appear to be unchanged. The color versions appear to have been released 1989, I went through some old sierra newsletters and macworld editions to put together a timeline of AGI releases.

I also think I found out the reason for the issue with the color versions, it appears to be a incompatibility caused by the move from 24-bit to 32-bit quickdraw.

I believe the Sierra Mac AGI games had a late 80s re-release, which is why some have Mac II friendly fixes and some don't.

Chances are there's a later version of this KQ that works on a Mac II or later out there. Just need to find the floppies!

Did this game ever work in color on original Macintosh hardware? Or was this a black & white only release?

In Mini vMac I tried the three standard resolutions of 512x342 (original Mac), 512x384 (Mac II) and 640x480, all in 16 colors, but the graphics always come out distorted. It only works properly in black & white in 512x342 resolution.

The reason I ask is that Space Quest has the same distortion and only works in color in 640x480. I remember my Mac LC used to display the same distorted color graphics because it was using the non-standard resolution of 640x400. I had to run the game in black and white on that machine despite having a color monitor.

It seems that fixing the resolution at 640x480 with 16 colors works for all the other AGI games, except for the original King's Quest.

Just feed ScummVM with these files. Wink

KQ1 asks for current boot volume. If in vMac, just again open ('insert') the disk image vMac booted from.
