IIRC this looks easy at first because of the autofire, but rock velocities increase rapidly (vs say Maelstrom or Asterax), so by stage 14 you can't really avoid them.
Therefore, for a high score, shoot the rocks as gradually as possible to generate more powerups and more alien ship fragments (far more points than the ship itself) per stage. I would leave one rock of a certain size on the screen, until I accidentally hit it, then go down to one rock of the next size smaller.
This was the first endless shooter I recall admitting there was no ending, and incorporating that into the story. (Yes, I just said something philosophical about HemiRoids... :>
