Guides on emulating older games

The most advanced, the best produced, the most amazing first-person shooter to have ever graced my Mac's screen.

  — Jean-Luc Dinsdale, Inside Mac Games (read full review)

Halo: Combat Evolved takes place in a science fiction universe created by Bungie Studios. According to the story, the realization of faster-than-light travel has allowed the human race to colonize other planets after the overpopulation of Earth. A keystone of these efforts is the planet Reach, an interstellar naval yard and a hub of scientific and military activity. A secret military endeavor, dubbed the SPARTAN Project, is established on Reach to create an army of biologically engineered, cyborg "supersoldiers."

Twenty-seven years before the beginning of the game, a technologically advanced collective of alien races, the Covenant, begin to attack human settlements, declaring humanity an affront to their gods. The United Nations Space Command experiences a series of crushing defeats; although the supersoldiers of the SPARTAN-II Project are effective against the Covenant, they are too few in numbers to turn the tides of war. To prepare for a mission to discover the location of the Covenant's homeworld, SPARTAN-II soldiers are recalled to Reach. Two days before the mission was to begin, Covenant forces attack Reach and destroy the colony. A starship, the Pillar of Autumn, survives the onslaught with the SPARTAN-II Master Chief on board. The ship initiates a jump to slipspace (similar to hyperspace), hoping to lead the enemy away from Earth. The game starts with the Pillar of Autumn encountering Halo.

The player assumes the role of the Master Chief, the cybernetically enhanced supersoldier mentioned above. The player is accompanied by Cortana, an artificial intelligence who occupies the Master Chief's neural interface. Player battles various aliens as they attempt to uncover the secrets of the eponymous Halo, a ring-shaped artificial world.

Nice! Version 2.0.4 Universal working very well on Late '09 iMac (Core2Duo).

by dr.zeissler - 2021, March 26 - 9:08pm

Halo 1.0 runs good with vertex-shaders on G4-MacMini 10.3.9
To bad that there are no pixel-shader-effects possible on R9200.

by dr.zeissler - 2021, March 7 - 1:37pm

The 2.0 runs SMOOTH and FAST on old MacMini 2/2,4 Ghz Core2Duo. (no V-sync)

Use HaloMD instead, runs beautifull with no problems. The above versions are painfully slow on my Eight Core 3 Ghz Mac Pro (nvidia gtx680).

Halo on the 2009/2010 MacMini (9400m/320m) You can choose:

Version 2.0
Good: light/shadows/shaders are correct
Bad: v-sync is broken with slowdowns/hickups ( you have to deactivate v-sync),
no NoDVD available but mounting CD-Image works with Toast 6.11 works

Version 2.0.x
Good: v-sync is working, DVD is not needed
Bad: light/shadows/shaders are BROKEN

I use 2.0 to avoid glitches like black lines in the water, black lines around objects, but I have to mount the cd-image and I have to accept the screen-tearing. I always use the best-shader option in order to get the reflections on objects.

Universal binary does work but moving inside the game is painfully slow on my Intel Mac. I've found a working alternative HaloMD launcher on

Running flawlessly on my Late 2005 PowerMac G5 (DC 2.0ghz). Downloading the Universal Binary and then updating to patch 2.0.4 works great. Used one of the CD keys provided further down in the thread.

On a side note, the game installs fine under Mac OS 9, but when running it, I get the following error message:

The apllication "Halo" could not be opened because "OpenGLLibrary--
glProgramEnvParameter4fvARB" could not be found.

You may need to install a newer version of "OpenGLLibrary--

I certainly wouldn't mind seeing some alpha or beta Mac OS 9 leaks of it...

Damn! What pisses me off the most is that we see it running under Mac OS 9 during that demo!

Anyone tried it on intel HD3000? (MacMini 2011/Macbook). It does not work for me. Missing textures, pink water and so one. Something wrong with my copy of halo, or with the shaders that are supported on intel HD3000?

This was actually made for Macintosh as a third person RPG style game that was demoed at Mac World 1999. Check youtube its there.

Whoa. I never knew Halo had a Mac version, especially PPC. No platform is more deserving than the one that started the entire Marathon series. Laughing out loud

The R9200 Shaders (MacMiniG4) were never supported...that's a bad thing Sad
UT2004 do make use of them. There are nearly no games that support the R9200 shaders.

Does anyone know how to make this work with custom multiplayer maps and custom UI's? I tried pasting them into the maps folder but they don't show up in the maps list when the game starts.

Has anybody got this to run on Power Mac G4? I can get the graphics setting to launch, but as soon as I click "OK", the title card flashes and screen res changes to 800x600 and the game quits throwing up an error dialogue. Is it possible for an application to install in Tiger on a G4 but attempt to run in 64-bit mode, causing the crash?

Halo's defiantly a great game, especially it's multiplayer. It's a shame Halo 2 was never released for Mac, but then again this is Microsoft we're talking about.

Too bad: when the level on the space station is completed, it crashes at the end of the scene in the shuttle (next level).
Even after a restart, the game keeps crashing at the same point.
(iMac G4 with OS X, 768MB memory)

I've ordered a 2GB memory kit for my "iLamp", we'll see if this is related to the available memory.

I have it running perfectly well on my PowerMac G4 with 10.5.8 - it's not a very well optimized port though so you'll want all the memory you can get. I'm running it with 2gb and a 128mb ATI Radeon 9600.

themacmeister's picture
by themacmeister - 2013, October 20 - 10:55am

Any word on this still running OK on OS X 10.5.8 PPC ?

Or will I need the universal binary?

Jake's picture

Set the game resolution to something like 640x480. When I would set the game to 1400x900 for my Macbook Pro it would glitch on the load screen.

Tanner1294's picture
by Tanner1294 - 2012, March 24 - 9:45pm

Okay so redownloaded, unstuffed it, reinstalled it, and I still can't get past a part in the game. It keeps crashing after it goes to load the next level. (When Cortana talks about being able to teleport you to some place, and he says he's not going to like it)

Tanner1294's picture
by Tanner1294 - 2012, March 24 - 8:18pm

I've tried unstuffing the Sit file on a few different computers with different versions of OS X and Stuffit Expander and on every one the loading bar goes all the way to full after a little while, and then it just hangs there for hours without ever unzipping anything...

I'll redownload and try again.. slow internet is slow..

Why does it say "Cannot run in Classic mode"?

This hint maybe has been taken from the publisher's games description, to announce this game doesn't run in classic Mac OS versions.

Tanner1294's picture
by Tanner1294 - 2011, August 22 - 7:41pm

Why does it say "Cannot run in Classic mode"? It doesn't even NEED to run on OS 9 or any classic Mac OS. I've been playing this natively on OS X Tiger without Classic running.

Hey Durandalia...
when i see cptn keyes uniform wearing the marathon sign, and telling that masterchief has to carry on and deal with some AI... (not again...) i was expecting durandal and tycho to appear too...

amatecha's picture
by amatecha - 2010, June 26 - 11:05am

Don't worry Durandalia, it merely helps you to weed out the longtime Bungie fans from the "noob" masses! Wink For real though, it's great to see how Halo has developed and IMO fleshed out the universe that began with Marathon. In a way I'm grateful for the acquisition by MS because I don't think Bungie could have taken the universe to the same level of depth on their own (mostly because there would not have been as many games in the Halo series). Smile

Durandalia's picture
by Durandalia - 2010, April 11 - 9:45pm

It breaks my heart when I think of how many people don't know that Halo's origins lie very distinctly within the U.E.S.C Marathon.
