Also known as "Frogatto & Friends", it was a huge undertaking made for retro gamers, by retro gamers. Started out as free and opensource for PC-Mac-Linux but became a fee activity for macOS etc. The initially free offering was in order to promote the first game using its amazing new engine named Anura.
v1.0.x runs using OS X 10.4 Tiger Universal.
v1.1.x requires OS X 10.5 Leopard Universal.
v1.3.1 was still freeware and open source in 2012.
v1.3.2 is now a commercial product for macOS.
There are lots of bugs in the old versions and features added to the newer ones. First download is version 1.0.3 the highest in the 1.0.x set for Tiger. I tried v1.1.0 and crashed it, then v1.1.1 is said it fixes crashing. The screenshots here are from v1.1.0 in which the Arcade mini games are a new thing that v1.0.3 doesn't have. v1.3.1 is greatly expanded, the data folders have grown over 50% larger, the controls have no doubt improved, and frog's tongue is a lot longer.
Some things to know... In game Cntl^f toggles full screen mode, Cntl^e opens up a level editor, and you have the ability to drop down from the platform you are on via holding down-arrow to crouch and then tapping the jump button.
thedoctor45 added the custom Leopard+Intel binary of Frogatto 1.3.1 he compiled.
CompatibilityOS X Tiger or newer.
Leopard and Intel needed for the latest version.
Comments
There do exist 3D FPS games which run the same in all three OS (9, X, & MorphOS) -- Jedi Knight II Jedi Outcast, and, Alien vs Predator.
Shame it doesn't run in OS9.... It'd be nice to find one game/engine (of the same version
) that plays perfectly under OS9, Tiger/Leopard, Open/Net BSD (or even FreeBSD if you could find a pkg repo for ppc32
), PPC Linux and MorphOS. Boot any compatible OS and play an identical game.... emulators don't count
It'd have to be 2d like Frogatto due to the mess that is 3D gfx on PPC Linux, neve rmind *BSD !
Good game for kids though, and if you ever give them a Linux machine you'll find it there too
Frogatto v1.3.1 was compiled for MorphOS and I run MorphOS on my model PowerMac Mirror Door G4/G5 hybrid. Am about to run this combination. In case reality shifts, it was just me..
It's okay, but the controlling is a bit iffy, especially the jumping (it's difficult to jump precisely - you often end up going too far or not far enough) and when you have to rebound up walls.
The Mac App Store version is copyright 2011 and has the names "David White, Richard Kettering, Ben Anderson et al".
Both the Anura game engine and the original Frogatta game are available as open source on GitHub.
gr8! Only three stars? The farther it's played, cool stuff is continuously unleashed.
I thought I had a pre-release version at first because it is (now) a commercial 2010 game where file says 2009 and no credits or company name anywhere and no registration. Lots o work into creating, and it seems no-names is how they wanted it. Btw Frogatto/Anura was coded by the same guys who brought us the "Battle for Wesnoth".
I've added the .zip archive for version 1.1.1 from the WayBackMachine / Archive.org of the official website. The Get Info window says 2009, but there's no date on the game's About window.
File info for the app bundle(s) claim to be 2009 but further inspection inside them tells of 2010.
I upload Frogatto 1.0.2. This works on mac os x 10.4.11 and mac os x 10.5.8 on Power mac G4 1.25 Ghz mirror door 2003 with Radeon 9800 Pro with 128MB. year 2009.
I found a few places claiming to be version 1.1.1, but downloading the .zip files so far reveals they are really version 1.0.
Version 1.0.3 seems to work fine in MacOS X High Sierra / 10.13 on my Intel Mac Mini.
There is a version 1.3.2 on the Mac AppStore priced at US$9.99 for Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later (but not macOS Catalina / 10.15).
