Guides on emulating older games

In Cro-Mag Rally you are a speed-hungry caveman named Brog who races through the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages in primitive vehicles such as the Geode Cruiser, Bone Buggy, Logmobile, Trojan Horse, and many others. Brog has at his disposal an arsenal of primitive weaponry ranging from Bone Bombs to Chinese Bottle Rockets and Heat Seeking Homing Pigeons. In addition to single-player racing where one player races against the computer, there are also several different multi-player modes including Tag, Capture the Flag, and Survival. Two players can play on a single computer in split-screen mode, or up to 6 players can play over a network.

Downloads 1 and 2 are the same.

1st download has taken download #2 and converted it to a .iso .sit format more easily read in classic Mac OS - use StuffIt Expander 5.5 or later to extract this archive.

2nd download is the official final shareware version 2.2.1 year 2006.

Cro-Mag Rally has been released for free by Pangea.
Register it with one of these serial numbers:
ADBEBGGLILJM (the official free Pangea serial)
AHBDAGGMJLFM (an alternative serial)

3rd download is an updater-only for bringing older Cro-Mag Rally to its latest version (2.2.1).

4th download is the Demo version 2.1.2 from the year 2003. This version will have several bugs according to the v2.2.1 changelog.

5th download is the Demo version 2.2.0 from November 2003. Pangea had put these out as dmg when it'd be nice if OS 8.6 could open.

This demo version of Cro-Mag Rally will let you play the first two tournament tracks and the first two battle tracks. All game modes are enabled, including the multi-player split-screen and network modes. This demo will expire after 90 minutes of play.

– Excerpt taken from enclosed documentation.

Cro-Mag Rally has nine (9) tournament tracks each with their own rich graphics and funky music. The 9 tracks are divided into three (3) Ages, where the first Age comes unlocked but the second and third ages are inaccessible until their previous Age has been won.

Stone Age
- Desert
- Jungle
- Glaciers

Bronze Age
- Crete
- The Great Wall
- Giza

Iron Age
- Medieval
- Viking Village
- Atlantis

There's an attract mode if left unattended at the main menu, in which some unlocked track is chosen at random (so the same track could appear two or more times in a row). To unlock all tracks so that all 9 may be practiced and seen in attract mode, do the following: start a tournament game, then when the track 3D environment begins press the B R I keys simultaneously, it will end and announce your ranking (1st thru 6th) but always pretends you won that track in 1st Place. Repeat across the first three tracks to unlock the second Age. Repeating across six tracks will unlock the third and final Age whereby all 9 tracks will be unlocked. After you quit and relaunch, you'll need to load the Saved Game to again unlock everything. Lastly it seems track 9 "Atlantis" will never demo in attract mode, picks randomly from tracks 1-8 instead.

Architecture: PPC (Carbonized)

Both the original Rev A iMacs and the old beige G3's came installed with ATI Rage II 3D accelerators. Those accelerators are not OpenGL compliant and are too slow for Cro-Mag Rally to be played on.

Beige G3 owners simply need to install a more recent 3D accelerator, strongly recommend is the ATI Rage 128 or better.
Rev A iMac owners will not be able to play the game unless they have a Voodoo2 card installed from Micro Conversions.

OS X Compatibility:

Since Cro-Mag Rally was created in 2000 before OS X shipped, not all components of OS X were complete at publication time and thus the Networking feature is unavailable in OS X. Net is available however (untested) in OS X if you first open the app File Info and tick the box "Open in the Classic environment" thereby using Classic emulation. Game will run mostly full speed this way even in Leopard thanks to having been coded Carbonized.

Anybody know how to get the Pterodactyl to appear and drop bombs on you? What track?, 2-player?, what circumstances?

I cleaned up this page and its files. The older comments re mistakes were in reference to the outdated Demo version. Anyway, most of the screenshots here are not of the Mac version so still need to be fixed...

@mrdav: yes, the top DL file's .sit name is a typo (actual is v2.1.2).
