This game works with: SheepShaver,

"Comanche is a series of simulation games published by NovaLogic. The goal of each of these games is to fly military missions in a RAH-66 Comanche helicopter gunship, which was in development and prototyping at the time of release.

A note about the downloads available from above:

  1. file is the game CD image + an update CD image
  2. External link to game CD + update CD image
    Download from Mega.Co.Nz
  3. file is a custom-made Mac OS X .dmg file
  4. file is a CD image including Audio partition

Comanche was the first commercial flight simulation based on voxel technology via the company's proprietary Voxel Space engine (written entirely in assembly language). This rendering technique allowed for much more detailed and realistic terrain compared to simulations based on vector graphics at that time."

Followed by Werewolf vs. Comanche 2.

Architecture: 68k PPC

Game works on OS X in Classic environment.

I have a very strange problem. I tested this game in 3 emulators: Basilisk, Sheepshaver and Fusion for Ms-Dos. In every of them enemy helicopters seem to be ignoring me completely. Is that an emulation issue or is it a bug in a game? Can somebody confirm? I don't recall such a problem on a real Mac, but it was like two decades ago, so I may have forgotten this

Thanks IIGS_User for uploading the image file! That one works fine, even on old 'real' hardware. My mistake was to guess that this is a full install within the .dmg. Since the error wasn't displayed properly I never guessed it was asking for a CD. That resolved, it works fine now - thanks you two for helping out on that one! Smile

Nice to see converting the .dmg to .iso works fine.

Also a nice hint to copy just the application file onto the hard disk drive and it works fine when the CD image is mounted.

Anyone got any luck with the version hosted here lately?

I converted the .dmg to .iso and am able to play the game OK on a G4 running Mac OS 9.2.2

I just copied only the game's app to HD and had the .iso mounted using the Virtual CD/DVD Utility from here, for it to access it's files. This seems to work fine.

However, I see IIGS_User has added the CD + update to the archive, since. Smile

Anyone got any luck with the version hosted here lately? I downloaded the file (which is just an install btw) and copied them to my hdd. Upon starting the program, I get an error that is displayed outside the upper left corner of the screen. All I can see is the "quit" button. Not sure what causes the problem, but I get it both on my MDD G4 and my PowerMac 6100, no matter what resolution / color depth. Strange.

Anyone got the real thing and could put up a toast image, please?

I've gotten my Comanche Mac working in SheepShaver. I made a disc image using Toast 10, and mounted it via the SheepShaver preferences volumes list. I guess I could upload my image if people can't get anything else working.

Make sure the frame rate is locked (esc > Detail > Lock Frame Rate checked), or else the game will go really fast!

Actually Yes I've had a lot of Macintoshes, I've had: an Apple //c, Apple Mac LCII, a Mac classic SE, a Powerbook 500 and the last a Performa 6500/225,
I had all these when I lived in Orange County California, until I Graduated,
Then I had to come back to Cancun, Mexico and Mexico City and I couldn't bring all my Stuff with me,
so I sold and left a lot of things (including my Car, Computers, electronics, etc..)
and I just brought my Apple //c, the one that started me in the Apple world,
and all my Mac CD's

Now here in Mexico, It's almost impossible to find older Macs
Actually Iam looking to buy one, a G3 or G4
(new ones are easy because they became very Popular after the iPod boom but extremely expensive)

meantime, I have to settle with my Toshiba and the Emulators, which by the way I love these Emulators, what would I do without them,
but still Sad

I've been running it without any problems on my iMac G3, 400 Mhz, 256 MB RAM and OS 9.2.2. Burned it on disc though. Since it works fine on original hardware it seems to have an incompatibility towards emulation. But how come such a big mac gaming ethusiast like you (Euryale) doesn't have the original hardware? It's much more fun than emulation Smile

It expands fine, the .IMG mounts correctly, but when double-click the actual game
it gives me that error

"Comanche cannot run because

first I tried Basilisk, and I thought it was a PPC version because of the "OSError.." message,
then I tried SheepShaver and it does the same.

Euryale, is it mounting okay and not running, or is it not mounting at all?

Well first let me get this out
(no need to reply, Just a little story of my first experience with .dmg files)

- I downloaded the first file of this game (when it was available)

- I didn't know what I was getting into 'cuz .dmg files were totally unknown to me,

- I got 3 different .dmg to ISO/dsk file converters, none of them work except one which was able to convert it to .dsk file through the MS-DOS console (and I did't know DOS)

- finally did it,

- I tried to mount it in Basilisk as a new Drive, didn't work (wouldn't recognize it)

- I tried the same under SoftMac emulator and It Worked and it seemed to run fine..
but.. The SoftMac Emulator doesn't render many games well, making them unplayable and
it doesn't have sound..(that's why, Now I use it only for 2nd Testing
and that's why I was so happy when I found out Basilisk existed thanks to MacGarden)

-then, I mounted it as a new drive in SheepShaver w/OS 9 and it worked...
..for 3-4 times,
and then it stopped recognizing it as a new drive, thus I couldn't play it anymore..Gawwd!

Thanks for the Re-upload Attila, Hopefully this one works in Basilisk....

"Comanche cannot run because
OSErr-43" (⌐ ⌐)

Tried both, Basilisk and SheepShaver, I give up.

I finally made it work,
gee! this one was a tough one.

Euryale's picture
by Euryale - 2009, August 19 - 10:54pm

Can't mount it because as you mention, it asks me to Initialize the "new drive"
so I'm gonna try the other solution using the converting tools,
-guess I have to dust off all those DOS command-line books,
I already forgot how to change directories in DOS Shock

mount that image as a (virtual) drive

This should also work if you add the original img/dmg to the virtual drives list of the emulator before booting it up.

My experiences are: if I add a .dmg to the emulator's drives list, the first time the emulated Mac OS wants me to initialize the virtual hard disk.
After the first-time initalizing inside of the emulator, the virtual hard disk is ready to use with it.

Is it possible to get Comanche Mac re-uploaded prepared (imaged) from original CD, receiving a .toast, .cdr or .nrg zipped file?

eastone's picture

Solution from internet:
There's a command line tool able to convert a DMG file to an ISO one.
You can download DMG2ISO from here:

Once you have the ISO, you can either burn it with almost any CD burning application, or mount that image as a (virtual) drive with something like Daemon Tools, Vitual CD, etc., or directly see or extract files with other image utilities like CDMage.

Disk Copy 6.4 and above are not compatible with Basilisk, so I tried using Sheepshaver OS 9
(Disk Copy 6.4) and gives me an error message

"The mount image operation did not complete, (-50)"

Try Disk Copy v6.4 or v6.5 (available at this site).

How do you open the .dmg file in Basilisk OS 8.1?
