Canabalt is a 2009 side-scrolling endless runner video game designed by Adam Saltsman for the "Experimental Gameplay Project." It was released originally as freeware written in 'Flash' on Saltsman's own web site, and has since been adapted; first on iOS, the Commodore 64 (in year 2011), PlayStation Portable, Android, Ouya, and various Flash based gaming websites such as Steam, etc. The music was composed by Danny Baranowsky. The original Flash game is still free to play (2019), but some of the later editions can cost a little $.

Its name Canabalt is a made-up word that was derived from a mashup of other words, likely "cannonball" plus "catapult" and maybe "cannibal" too. The player, a male office worker, flees a non-specified disaster afflicting his entire city. The only control the player has over the character is through a single button, which makes him jump, either from building to building or over obstacles. Play rate speeds up continuously, but the player can choose to slow it down at times by colliding with certain small objects instead of leaping over them. Unlike other platform games which have predesigned stages and can be played to completion, the landscape of Canabalt is procedurally generated (random in real time). Canabalt strikes a pleasing balance between Skill and Luck. Its flawless execution of one simple idea makes the lack of story or any other depth inconsequential. In November 2012, Canabalt was included in the permanent collection of video games held at the Museum Of Modern Art in New York/San Francisco.

dL 2 is this game bundled as an app with StandAlone Flash Player v9, Universal Binary, tested runs on PowerPC OS X 10.2.8 thru 10.5.8 & Intel OS X 10.4.11 - 10.5.8
Fails to run in Flash Player v7 (which could've allowed Classic OS ...)
Game native resolution is about 920 X 320, very widescreen, non scalable.

The source code for the iPhone port is available as an MIT licensed Xcode 3.2 project, targeting iPhone OS 3.

There's enough there that somebody could build a Flash-free Mac OS X 10.4 port, if they wanted to. It is what all the other Canabalt ports seem to be based on.
