Guides on emulating older games

Artus, an infant mouse, lives with his parents in the den of a museum. For decades, his family has inherited a heavy task: they are the guardians of the museum and watch over the paintings on display. One stormy night while the parents are absent, Artus sees strange phenomena which are brought to life from the terrible curse of the Museum. The terrible demon of the Museum takes all the paintings. With his magical powers, Artus plunges and moves in the parallel universe of the double canvas, a veritable stage set where the characters come to life. Will they be friends or enemies? Your mission, should you accept it, is to accompany Artus, a hero despite himself, in adventures that will restore the 25 masterpieces of the greatest painters of the world. The plot brings kids to play with the array elements, and makes them aware of the artistic universe. Thanks to the different areas of the CD-ROM, kids will be immersed in a world which is stimulating to the imagination. There's six great adventures, each which tell a story. Face challenges and action, conduct investigations, and find clues and items you need to win. (Adventure Legends)

The game plays in French.

Well, it comes from the nasty site, you know... And I'll upload here all the missing things they could have over there. Wink

I will next try installing a French 9.2.2 on my eMac

That seems to have worked. So it appears to require a French (PPC) Mac OS. It certainly didn't like any US English system I tried.

Hi mrdav

It's looking more like the Artus games need a French language Mac OS... I installed 7.6.1 French on SheepShaver and the artifacts have vanished allowing me to enter a name of my choice.

But like MacTouch, I now find it will crash SheepShaver dead before it will go any further.

So, I will next try installing a French 9.2.2 on my eMac (it can't use any earlier Mac OS versions)...

BTW, under emulation I first tried it on B2 running 7.1.1 - It informed me that it requires 7.5 or later.
Still on B2, I tried to install it on 7.6.1, which it then informed me that it required a PPC (screenshot 3 above). Thought it could have included that tidbit with the 7.5 alert...

SheepShaver is too flaky to handle this, and it seems a French OS is required.

Hi Mike

I suspect it will only work on an OS earlier than OS 9 (maybe 8.x since you have tried 7.6.1). Am trying to set up some test systems without emulation but I have not yet had time yet.

EDIT: No joy here at all. Glad you are getting more success as described in your comment above.

Hi MacTouch. Thanks for having a look at it.

I've since tried it on SheepShaver under Mac OS 7.6.1 - While it didn't crash on me, I got exactly the same results as on actual hardware, outlined in my previous post. So... I don't see this as actually being usable on a Mac, so far. Same goes for the other Artus game we have. - I may need to install a French version of Mac OS to be certain.

Photoshop 1.0? Sure, send it up, I'll take a look - no guarantees on the re-virginize bit tho' Wink

Hi Mike,

Sorry, I can't help you right now. This one is crashing literally with Shaver every time... Sad

Apart from that, I've found a copy of Photoshop 1.0 (not 1.0.7) if you are interested. This is a preregistered version (demo version mentioned in French), but I know you can "virginize" it. Smile Let me know if you want me to upload on the Photoshop 1 page... Wink

Has anyone got this to work on a Mac under classic or otherwise?

I've tried playing this under Classic on an iBook G4 running Tiger and on a G4 eMac running 9.2.2 native. The game installs OK but gives the same result of not being able to enter a name to begin the game.

Where there should be a list of names are garbage characters, then, trying to enter a name gives this error:
"List expected for handler #count"

List of random characters appears

List of random characters appears where names should be listed.

The resulting error message when attempting to add a user name.

The game installs OK on Windows and plays past this name entry condition that I'm getting on a Mac. I was thinking that I may need to be running a French version of the OS but as the Windows version installs and plays OK under a US English version of Windows, maybe not.

The same poor result as this also is happening with the game Artus et le vaisseau fantôme for me.

The game is listed above as 68k. Its not. It's classic PPC native well it could be FAT but I haven't attempted to run it on 68k Macintosh to find out I've since tried to install it on a 68k Mac - I'll update the page info a little. Game engine is Macromedia Director.

So, anyone had better luck with this, than me?
