Guides on emulating older games

A note about the downloads available:

  1. file is a preinstalled version. It has the advantage of not requiring the CD or mounted disc image to run.
    Also mirrored below:
    Download from Mega.Co.Nz
  2. file is a Toast image of an original CD...the game installed from this requires the CD to run or the locked disc image mounted with Toast .
  3. file at the top-right is the updater to version 1.0.9.
  4. Like the 1994 Alien vs Predator game for the Atari Jaguar, Aliens versus Predator offers three separate campaigns, each playable as a separate species: Alien, Predator, or human Colonial Marine. Each player character has different objectives, abilities, and weapons. The single-player campaign presents the player with a conventional series of levels to progress through that are designed around the abilities of each character.

As the Colonial Marine the player uses a number of weapons to combat Aliens and Predators. The marine wears armor for protection and uses an image intensifier and flares to improve visibility in dark areas.

When playing as the Predator the player uses a variety of weapons from the Predator films such as wrist blades, a throwing disc, and shoulder-mounted energy weapons. The Predator is the most durable of the three player characters and can survive falls from greater heights than the human. The player can use a cloaking device to become invisible and several different modes of vision to detect enemies, including an infrared vision mode and a mode sensitive to electrical systems.

As an Alien the player can explore most of the game's environments freely, even climbing across walls and ceilings. The Alien has no weapons, however, using its claws, tail, and jaws to attack enemies. The screen is distorted into a fisheye lens effect to reflect the Alien's field of view. The player can also use a form of echolocation in dark areas and can detect pheromones to discern human or Predator enemies. The Alien can drop from any height without injury and is the fastest of the three player characters. Wikipedia

Loved this game in my youth, still has that amazing atmosphere, still don't last long when playing as a Marine, Beebeep beebeep..... I can here it, arghhh dead Laughing out loud

Works very well on my G5 Quad Core 2.5Ghz with Geforce 7800GT in OSX 10.5.8.

Used the Disk image (Download #2) Installed normally
Then updated to Version 1.0.9 (Download #3)
Locked the Disk Image and mounted it with Titanium Toast V10
AVP Gold loaded up perfectly.

Many thanks to the Uploader and this Awesome Website

Updated installation works like a charm on Snow Leopard. Just lock and mount the disc image with Roxio Toast to play it.

The text is unreadable, playing in OS9 9.2.2, and textures look super simple. Playing on an 8600 with a G3 500Mhz card, plentry of ram and a Voodoo 3. Anyone had this happen? Solutions? Have played around with the A/V settings but nothing seems to change anything. Seems like it would be a really fun game so would like to get it working for sure.

'Compatibility' and 'System' should reflect the architecture the game has been created for.
'Mac OS X' in the green area above would confuse peoples, because Mac OS X 10.5+ will say 'Classic no longer supported' or similar.

I dunno, but i use this on my G4 with mac os 9, and it works nicely. Before upload, i try it on my Intel, and it works! Maybe carbonized software.

There is something wrong in Compatibility.
Mac OS 8 - 9 and x86(Intel) / "Universal Binary" doesn't match.
So the question is: what's true?

Tanner1294's picture

How does this run on OS 9? The only application in the download you can is a Mac OS X application. It even has "OS X" in the file name. Is there an OS 9 version anymore?

Its not patched to 1.0.4, in the ¨Get Info¨ window you can see it is v1.0.
I was running this game in a mac core 2 duo (X 10.5.8) before the upload (amazed that it runs so well). I will continue testing on it.
The screenshots were made from that machine.

Maybe they mean Carbonised rather than Universal Binary.

MacRumors Wiki to games shows it definitely being a PowerPC app only, but it runs well under Rosetta in OSX 10.4 and 10.5 with the v1.0.4 patch.

But the MacGameFiles page for the 1.0.4 patch says "Classic Only".

Are there different versions available? 'Mac OS 8 - 9' and 'Universal Binary [x86 (Intel)]' doesn't match.
Probably the site system marked a different checkbox than you've clicked...

This is the gold version, dont matter if it says Os X, works perfectly in mac os 9 and dont even need a no-cd patch. Enjoy

Runs nicely on my iMac G3/400MHz here under Tiger, will try it in OS9 in a bit. One problem though is that everything is too dark in all three species, even with the gamma turned up all the way. Oh, with humans the image intensifier is waaay too powerful, it makes everything white from light that is too dim without the intensifier.

Hey this isn't for OS9... only works in X.

What a game!!! A facehugger almost makes me scream of horror! Believe me, nothing like an stormy night to play this game for the first time, and soon, you will start to feel that you need new underwear... bloody, sick, scary and everthing else those movies makes you feel when you saw them.
A few details are missing: As a predator, you cant get the skin of any human, you dont have the retractile pike, and your shoulder cannon is not as powerful as you might want to be. In the Human part, you are a midget with a lot of guns and can get easily killed. As an Alien, you better have good sense of perspective when you climb or you will finish ripped in parts. Ill see if I can get the latest versions of this saga.
By the way: Quicksilver-10.4.11-9.2.2 here.

The app included appears to be only for OSX - or cannot be decompressed under OS9 - can you please re-upload a stuffit archive - and does it run on OS9?
