Escape Velocity: Override - Remaster on Kickstarter

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cosmicfrontier/cosmic-frontier-override

Peter Cartwright, creator of the story for Ambrosia Software and Matt Burch's Escape Velocity: Override, has launched a Kickstarter to fund a re-release of the game. They have Matt Burch's blessing (provided they use a different name than Escape Velocity) and Ambrosia Software's approval.

For those of us who knew and loved Ambrosia's products, this is very welcome news. If it does well, I hope we see other Ambrosia game developers become interested in releasing new versions of their old games!

Interesting... I've been playing Endless Sky for years -- it's an open source re-creation of Escape Velocity with new storylines (and the ability to start with a shuttle, a fighter, or a light freighter).

Why not just re-release mods for Endless Sky using the EV and EVO storylines?

That said, I agree. The guys who submitted their software through AmbrosiaSW are near and dear to my heart. Avara was a game I loved, including all the bugs and mods. Avara and EV are games very much in the spirit of Bolo, where the game was designed to support modding, long before the advent of "official" mods via games like CounterStrike. And Cap'n Hector was genius!

Yes, Endless Sky is also a fun EV-like game!

Peter Cartwright discusses it briefly here, but his main point seems to be that the engine is too different despite having a similar style. I can understand that motivation, especially if he wants backwards compatibility with other EV scenario files.

I have to admit, as much as I enjoy Endless Sky, it doesn't quite capture the same magic as EV and EV:O for me. The propulsion and energy management are a little too different, plus ship sprites in Endless Sky don't have that pseudo-lighting effect found in EV. It's probably just nostalgia, but I'm sure Peter Cartwright is counting on that! Tongue

Relevant to this discussion, I made a small video discussing Cosmic Frontier and Endless Sky: https://youtu.be/J40ysi2e0fU.

Thanks to a one-week extension, there's still plenty of time to contribute to the kickstarter if anyone is interested!

Well, this one is about $7200 short of the target if anyone here is still on the fence. I kicked in a few extra bucks yesterday.
