Did You know?

Did You know that we're working on re-writing the entire website?
No? Well, if you're interested to know more, feel free to ask.

This magnificent post will be updated, though right now ... it's short and concise.

  • Speedy fast!

  • HTML 3.2
  • XHTML 1.0
  • HTML 5
  • Could this be ... official and supported themes!?
  • Looks great in 800x600
  • Renders fine in Netscape 3.04, probably even Netscape 2
  • System 7? 68020 CPU? 8MB RAM? No problem!
  • Renders fine in present and future browsers.
  • Nobody likes Internet Explorer, don't even bring it up
  • Improved & Simplified search engine
    • Quick search for titles, product numbers, filenames & more
    • Refined search, filter as you wish!
  • Multitude of new browsing options
    • Year & Start > End (spanned, year to year)
    • System & System version > System version (spanned min to max)
    • Emulator
    • Genre/Category, Subgenre/Subcategory
    • Publisher, Author/Developer
    • Content Submitter
    • Architecture, CPU, RAM
    • Keywords / Tags
    • & More
  • All images presented in a compatible format, regardless of the format within the archive
  • Available in multiple languages, as long as someone translates!
  • HTTP, HTTPS (HTTP/2, HTTP/3, QUIC)
  • Brand new user account system with some nifty features
  • A sorted file archive
  • Checksums ranging from CRC-32 to SHA-512
  • Look inside file archives! (where applicable)
  • Did someone say Hotline? Wired? KDX?
  • No? How about FTP? Torrents? IPFS?
  • How about rsync?
  • A link exchange program! we link you, you link us in return.
  • Still 100% free
Oooh, it's time to party !
Front, Images Front, Less Images Browsing as 17+ Checking Quake

Looks really good! Looking forward to try out the new website on my B&W.
Will the current website be available alongside the new one? To me the current one is perfect for modern browser usage (when you search for a software on anything else than your old mac for example or if you have to upload something to the site on a modern machine).

When it comes to translation, I'd like to help with the French translation if needed.

When the time is right, both will run side by side for a while / undetermined period of time, after that we'll see. We won't just flip the switch and call it a day.

The idea is to cover all of the current features and introduce a plethora of new ones, essentially making the old one redundant. On a modern machine, the new site performs like its on heavy duty uppers.

I'll add you to the list, thank you Smile

Being able to actually download the files on the computer I intend to use them without having to use a "bridge Mac" is something I'm really looking forward to! Exciting Smile

Oh, text version... Haven't seen that one yet! Laughing out loud

Now that's a thought!

You would be trying it out with Wannabe, I'd imagine, right? After all the bugs are worked out of the upcoming versions, it shouldn't take much to take it to the next level (down), lol! Smile

That version should scream on Wannabe for sure! And if you turn images off, other browsers can be text-only already Wink

I'd imagine it could simply be a toggle function: click on a upper right-or-left button and images magically appear or disappear.

Yup! I really like WannaBe overall, and it opens up a lot of possibilities for very old Macs. (It would be nice if it had built-in text fields, but one can't complain too much about nearly 20-year-old software...)

Now that's a heck of an idea for some good-old Mac programming right there! Laughing out loud

Of course this is blurted out nearly-thoughtlessly by the least-qualified member of this Mac posse, lol Wink of course I did notice that the beta site does give the option to toggle images on the site so that part's been covered.

Are you going to use an asciifier plugin to convert all graphics to ascii art? I'd be interested to see what that looks like Smile

Now theres a crazy idea, love it !
It shouldn't be all too hard to write one, so I'll give it a go, mostly because it sounds hilarious

Surprisingly not that much code to convert an image into its ASCII equivalent... I will have to conduct a few tests on much older hardware to see whether or not it's useful.

Worst case it can be a site setting that is toggle-able, for novelty and fun

When I've done it, the biggest issue has been image size; asciifying an image tends to make it take up much more screen real estate unless you really downsample a lot, which means WishIWere, Links, Lynx, etc. tend to totally munge the images as they wrap by default after 24 characters.

But hey... even downsampling to the 24 character limit would give you... something... entertaining?

The target size is manageable, but there are some differences depending on OS / browser when it comes to fonts and sizes... with todays stuff it's entirely possible to have 1:1 transformations, whereas with older and text based (as you say) things will look ... different Wink

I just wish browsers properly supported the FirstClass graphics format, where each pixel was a coloured size 1 font character. But I guess that's a different topic Wink

Hey guys, as long as we definitely add some site support for animated PNGs, I'll be completely happy, lol! Laughing out loud

Any and all images are pulled from the archive regardless of their format are converted on the fly to a compatible format for your browser. Even if you were to click an image that would be 4k and up in dimension, it would downsize to a maximum of 1080p (for convenience)

The original image would however still be in the archive, untouched

I suppose that a setting for "modern formats" would be possible, like serving up webp etc.

Awesome, can't wait! Will our user accounts remain intact or will we need to make new ones?

Excellent question!
User accounts can be "migrated", for instance the account name, display name, registered e-mail and time of creation for instance. Passwords will be need to be reset if this is done.

I would like for fresh accounts to be created however, instead of carrying over nearly 20k accounts (various reasons)

The new system will require a valid E-Mail for instance, I've built a 2FA system that is set as a standard and can not be turned off, among other things.
A lot of focus has been put into the users privacy and security, assuring that we do everything in our power to keep it safe on our end. OAuth/OAuth2/Social Media authentication/misc auth is therefore kept as far away from our platform as possible

But back to the original question; fresh accounts is desired, but accounts can be carried over to some degree. Democracy & votes I guess? Wink

Democracy & votes I guess?

Probably don't migrate users that has not logged in since 5 years?

Excellent suggestion! *scribbles down*

How will uploads be attributed for those accounts that aren't migrated?

fogWraith's picture

The uploads by users that haven't been online for years are added manually, uploads don't have to be associated with existing accounts (which is one of the reasons why submissions won't require an account in the future), the same goes for additional contributors

Edit to clarify:
If the user who has not been active for X > years and the account is not carried over, at least the entry (app, game or otherwise) will have the name/nick carried over and be associated with the entry within the appropriate fields.

Submitted By: will only carry "Anynymous" or "Unknown" if the one who submits the content wishes to be one of either, and Additional Contributors will basically be the same.

Will this be in total, or just when detecting older systems? Big Job!!! One small suggestion - allowing posting images in discussions (say a screenshot when there is a debugging topic or some such).

The current site's winky smiley has always looked to me like it's wearing a pirate patch. Is that intentional?

I think it is: it makes it 100% cool Wink arhh! All it needs is a itty bitty pirate hat and feather to complete the ensemble... maybe a new one will be added in the next smiles's update.

why not something like a part of the website where we can buy/sell and trade our vintage macs sort of like a vintage version of the mid/late 90’s Apple Store or eBay for that matter

Well there's nothing that stops us from adding such a feature, it's just an additional mass of code. I'll definately consider a marketplace for users.

In the meantime, having a section within the discussion board for buying / selling / trading / recycling would be a much simpler solution, if there's any interest.

Very nice!! Our mac was never connected to the interwebs. We didn't have that until we got a Windows 98 machine. With this new website, I'll have to investigate how to get the beast networked!
