Creator Codes

I wonder if anyone else would find it helpful to have a field for each Application page where we can add the Creator Code for the software.

I work in a Library and sometimes get files from HFS disks and it’s not clear the of the creation software. The database that is on this site is extremely useful, but linking those references to actual software is sometimes difficult.

Have a look at:

It would definitely be useful to have an online version of that app. Added benefit: Cassidy & Greene had their own T&C database we well, and we could merge the data from there. There's is useful because the listing also has descriptions to go along with many of the types and creators.

Something else I was thinking of... it should be possible to create an Internet Config database pre-populated with all these types and creators. Or maybe even some sort of meta file that included all the icons as well, so even if you don't have the application, you get not only the pre-populated list of applications that can handle it, but also a default icon provided by one of the applications.

Should be possible; would be a bit of work, but not a lot of thinking required. I'm thinking the best solution would work on any system running up to 10.4.11 -- or if it's a metadata injector, maybe even on any system running HFS or HFS+ (even APFS?) drives -- just add the required tables to the correct place in the partition data.

Internet Config provides a good first step though. https://livecode.byu.edu/helps/file-creatorcodes.php has some useful info/mappings too.

Also, I dug up the latest version of the latest site to host the tcdb:

I like the icon idea as well. I have been also trying to get a hold of the owner of the TCDB to get permission to add the content to other databases such as WikiData.

Back in the 90s, he had the TCDB under a share-with-attribution license; the front-end eventually went to shareware between 2001 and 2003 when he re-wrote it for OS X, but I think the data still had the old license. So if you can't contact him, it's still available to use.

The alternative is that I script something up from scratch, since I've got a device where I store un-archived versions of most applications made between 1983 and 2001 for testing purposes. I've surely got a cache of metadata somewhere in the HFS+ partition that has most of what we're looking for for T&C/icon/mimetype/extension mapping.
