Emulation
Guides on emulating older applications

To run an Infocom game like The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy on your Mac OS X machine, you don't need to configure a Mac emulator to play these games. 'Zoom' is an interpreter for z-code games on Mac OS X.

Hint:
To get the games recognized by Zoom, please add the extension ".z5" (without quotes) to the application name.

A note about the manual file available from above:
This is a PDF'ed version of the Readme file found in the latest version available.

I didn’t explore all of the features of this emulator; I merely used it to play Infocom’s Enchanter Trilogy so I could enjoy and review these classic games. However, as far as emulators go, it’s astonishingly easy to use. Installation is as easy as downloading the disk image, copying the application file, and opening it. Using it is as easy as opening a game file and starting the game. The emulator-interface window is completely straightforward. The game-interface window is extremely simple and clean, and Zoom was perfectly stable while operating it on a MacBook Pro running El Capitan. I wish all emulators were that easy to use.

I just wanted to say that the embedded web browser that was used to download games inside Zoom is now incompatible iFDB. It's really sad because I used to use it flawlessly on my G3 running 10.4.

Since the Logical Shift site has gone, I've uploaded the interpreter to this very place.
