When the Moose or one of his pals speaks, its animated picture appears on your desktop in a user-definable position. The character will greet you at startup, say goodbye at shutdown, and throw in funny comments at selectable intervals. At your preference, it can speak the menu selections you choose, the names of windows you open, and the text contents of alerts and dialogs.

In addition to the 'classic' Talking Moose, you can choose between ten other desktop companions:

In 1992, Macworld gave Cartoon Carnival an Editor's Choice Award for "Best Desktop Diversion".

The three files you need to drag to your System Folder are Moose (expanded from the file Squashed Moose.sea), Moose Phrases, and MacinTalk (which is improved over Apple's MacinTalk of the period). The DAs, FKEYs, and HyperCard stacks are optional bonuses; see the file Moose Manual Addendum for more information.

To switch between characters, open the Moose Utilities (from the Moose control panel, or using the Go Moose shortcut) and select "Choose Picture" from the File menu.

Architecture: 68k

According to multiple Usenet reports, this final version of Baseline's Moose was not compatible with any 68040 or PPC Macintosh.

@eisnerguy1: Unfortunately, was someone's personal copy, with many of the phrases modified to refer to specific people ("Is this Bronwyn or Jane or Judy or Karen?"), sometimes insultingly ("Jamie is very anally fixated.") I would prefer we not propagate it further...

Talking Moose and Oscar ... two of the best Mac add-ons ever. We used to go around installing them on the computer room's Macs just to surprise people. Smile
