This app works with: Basilisk II, Mini vMac

An ancient drawing/animation program. It's the only program in the Studio/x series which can do animations with advanced tools. The other programs in the series, Studio/8 and Studio/32, add color capabilities, but can't do animations. This software was cited in the popular "Tricks of the Mac Game Programming Gurus" from 1995 as an easy way to do animated sprites due to its grid functionality (select, draw, move 8 pixels at a time or any arbitrary amount), which is useful in optimized blit operations.

Downloads #1 and #2 each contain an archive that includes the three original (but pre-registered) floppies: The Program disk, the Animation disk, and the Hypercard Demo disk. The difference is that #2 contains corrupted brushes, while #1 has had them manually fixed by using the corresponding non-corrupt data from the demo (download #3).

Both the corrupted and the demo versions (sourced from this VintageAppleMac.com archive and this NYMUG disc, respectively) are kept here mostly for reference. Download #1 is probably all you will want.

In case someone comes across a vanilla, non-registered version (upload it here if so, please!), the registration code / serial number "4682119240" has been reported to work.

Compatibility
Architecture: 68k

Confirmed to work in System 6.0.8, System 7.5.3 and Mac OS 9.2.2.

Doesn't work under Classic (starts, but crashes soon after launch).

It's good to see one of the trifecta available and fully working. Like someone mentioned earlier, there's also Studio/8 but there's also the oft forgotten Studio/32, I've been looking for that forever!

Thanks everyone for your great work, brushes work fine for me in that new version too. Much appreciated! Happy new years

Nicely done, MuOn and Jatoba !

Thanks for the fixed app, @Mu0n! And don't worry about using DiskCopy 6 in this case: I believe its issues only arise when creating the image from an actual physical floppy, and not from an image thereof, nor of other mediums like CDs etc., as far as I understood.

But just in case someone may be worried that some metadata or so could have gotten lost, I'll separately reupload the original corrupt SIT (properly labeled as such), as well as the demo files we got from NYMUG. [Edit: Done!]

I reuploaded the .sit file (made with Stuffit Deluxe 5.5) of all 3 disk images. Only the main program disk was remade with the correct resource fork item missing. Since I didn't image a physical disk, but a folder under an emulator environment, I could only go with DiskCopy 6.3.3 in order to transform my folder into a .img virtual disk file. I know that this version is frowned upon and DiskCopy 4.2 is prefered, but I couldn't find a way to make the image without going through a physical diskette. Hopefully this is acceptable. It seems to be on my end when I expand everything, mount the images and run the program.

@Mu0n
Nice job! That does seem to take care of the issue. I'll try that myself soon. Smile I did wonder if doing some combination like that would work, but I had no idea where to even start. Well done! @timdrage should be very pleased.

Using @mrdav's demo disk version and peeking around in the resources of the program file, the BRSH and AIRB resources were absolutely identical.

Then, I checked the Studio1.prefs files and indeed, my full retail version was missing the BRSH resource, while the demo version had it. Copying that resource over seems to work! Here's the proof:

Thanks for coming to the rescue as always, @mrdav. Indeed, that CD contains a demo with non-glitched brushes when selecting "Choose brush...". However, it is a non-registerable demo, and the demo version contains a few restrictions of its own. Namely, from the ReadMe, "Print, Save, Cut, Copy and Paste" are all unavailable. Sad

@Mu0n
It's more a matter of software preservation the best we can. It is also a bit detrimental to have one of the features lacking. For example, sometimes we can't or don't want to use another tool to make up for the corrupted feature.

As hard as it was for you to locate it (and it is deeply appreciated!), it'd still be desirable to keep our eyes peeled, even if chances are slim that this software will reemerge in a perfect state.

Another source for this application is NYMUG CD in the THE FILES/DEMOS folder. In there you will find a folder of a demo, that looks like it is a cracked version, of the application that DOES appear to have working brushes. There are also two Stuffit self-expanding archives labelled Studio/1 Demo Disk 1 and Studio/1 Demo Disk 2 that expand to folders containing support information as Hypercard stacks. I will leave it to others involved with this page to explore the new source and upload here as needed.

Honestly, is it that big of a deal about the brushes? This software's strengths lies in both its animation capabilities as well as its enforcement of the grid on several tools (I'm using it to design sprite frames that can be copied fast with the mac toolbox' CopyBits as long as the width of the images I want to extract are an integer multiple of 8 pixels).

I did search FAR and wide before I landed that vintage collection link. I had several burned dvd backups of what I had time to download from the hotline retromac68k from back in 2004-5. I tried looking at my mac garden backups from the same period as well. I used the wayback machine on several websites. Nothing worked until I found that lowkey place I linked.

Yep, I just tried the copy from the Survival Kit (thanks for that link by the way, useful!) and from the individual download elsewhere on his site - https://www.vintageapplemac.com/software/misc/s/ - and they both alas seem to be identically corrupted still Sad

Wish this software didn't have such an un-searchable name, ha.

Jatoba's picture
by Jatoba - 2019, December 30 - 8:02pm

@Mu0n
Just gave it a try, and it seems nothing went wrong during your downloading/extracting process. The images from that and from what's here in the Garden are 100% identical. This means that if there was indeed any form of corruption (which does seem to be the case), it happened from the source.

Looks like we will have to find another source for this one. Sad

I'm pretty sure Studio/1 is the only one in the series which can do animations.

As for the non-working brushes, my copy has empty ones under both System 6.0.8 (Windows mini-vMac) as well as System 7.5.3 (Windows Basilisk II).

Here's the source of the copy I fetched, if you want to make your own attempt at trying to figure out if my download and/or extracting process somehow got corrupted https://www.vintageapplemac.com/classic-mac-survival-kit/

Thanks for the infos. Just had a look at Studio/8 (realised I had to set the monitor to 256 colours to get it working), looks nice but it doesn't seem like it has the animation features of Studio/1? That's what I'm mainly interested in, plus would like to use it on a Mac Plus in the iPad version of Mini Vmac.

the original upload of this which people are discussing in older comments sounds like it was different, in that it required a serial number but the current version doesn't. Anyone still have that original version?

Jatoba's picture
by Jatoba - 2019, December 30 - 4:36pm

I don't know, but I finally decided to take a look at the situation on my Mac OS 9.2.2 on Mac mini G4 system. The program works perfectly, and so I updated the page description accordingly, but the brushes from "Choose Brush..." are indeed with those corrupted icons. Happens regardless of me using Millions of Colors + High Resolution or 256 Greys and Low Resolution.

A reupload of this, perhaps from a different source, does seem desirable, to confirm things.

Nonetheless, is there any particular reason for you to use this instead of the updated Studio/8 and especially Studio/32?

timdrage's picture
by timdrage - 2019, December 30 - 3:18pm

Yep, you can edit them or reset to standard but then nothing changes when you exit Sad

Does anyone reading have a properly working version of this?

24bit's picture
by 24bit - 2019, December 30 - 2:35pm

Oh my bad, sorry.
Thought it was OK when something was loaded as brushes at all.
You are quite right, the brushes are useless this way.
The "Standard" box shows how they should look, but there seems no way to save the standard look.

Thanks, but I just tried it in BasiliskII OS 7.5.3 - with the sit expanded within the emulated mac and then mounted using DiskCopy - and the brushes are still corrupted like this: https://i.imgur.com/a6vqL9K.png Weird!

someone commented below thanking for the re-upload, is it possible that you are using a previous copy and this new current upload is corrupted somehow?

24bit's picture
by 24bit - 2019, December 21 - 12:14am

Not sure what goes wrong exactly. Smile
Did you also try MiniVMac running System 7.5? The brushes seem to work there.
Also MiniVMac II with System 6.08 shows the brushes - same for Basilisk II and System 7.1 and 7.5.
Looks like hit and miss picking emulator and OS.

BTW: The disk images from the DL can be mounted with DiskCopy 6 in Basilisk II.

This is pretty much my dream 1bit animation software, thanks for posting Smile Having some trouble getting brushes working properly tho... Mini Vmac wouldn't open the images so I originally had to update + mount them in Disk Utility on os x, convert to images with HFS Disk Maker. This worked but when I go to 'Choose Brush" the brushes are all blank and can't be edited. I just tried again by a different method (putting the images on a virtual disk and mounting them in system 7 using Disk Copy), now the brushes contain pixels and will actually paint but they are all corrupted noise rather than brush shapes and editing them still does not work. Any ideas? Anyone else had similar problems?

EDIT: seems like the brushes are blank in system 6 and corrupted in system 7

importing an image/animation as a brush works ok as does converting selection to brush

The two were from the same company, about the same time; Studio/1 is black and white, for 68000 Macs (Plus and SE); Studio/8 was for color-capable 68020/030 machines. Studio/1 had the added benefit of animation capabilities, which was very exciting for those of us without the ability to install QuickTime.

I'm excited to try this out on vMac. I had installed it after I got it, but didn't get much chance to try it out before I had to reformat my hard drive, then discovered that the card with the serial number got lost. AAAAAGH!!

Thanks! What a cool app!

Is this by any chance related to Studio/8? Been looking for that unsuccessfully for years now ...

mabecabu's picture
by mabecabu - 2010, March 23 - 10:24pm

I can decompress them with Stuffit 4 (available here: http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/stuffit-deluxe) on Basilisk II running Mac OS 7.5.3. To mount them in the emulator, you need Disk Copy (available here: http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/disk-copy). Should work the same in minivmac. Just copy the application and various support files to your virtual hard drive and you're done! Worked for me.

Edit: Replaced 'xxx 7' by 'Mac OS 7' - IIGS User

Glad to hear the serial worked.
I am working on Windows XP with Mac OS 7.5.3 in minivmac.

mabecabu's picture
by mabecabu - 2010, March 23 - 5:34am

Yes, the serial worked, thanks again. Are you using Mac OS X or Windows? That would help me to try to help you. Those files are disk images (.img) encoded in BinHex (.bin) to preserve their contents on Windows machines. Also, are you using system 6 or 7 in minivmac?

bolle's picture
by bolle - 2010, March 22 - 8:49pm

Thanx for re-uploading. After unstuffing the .sit-file I get an img.bin-file. What the heck am I to do with that? Unstuffing this file again yields a message that I should use Dropstuff with Expander Enhancer. When using Dropstuff EE I get a system crash in minivmac. Could you help me with this pls?

P.S.:
Did the serial work out?

mabecabu's picture
by mabecabu - 2010, March 22 - 6:41pm

Yeah, no problem. And my eternal gratitude for the number.

bolle's picture
by bolle - 2010, March 22 - 3:19pm

As it happens so often with some files put up here, clicking the download link only returns "
NoSuchKey The specified key does not exist." Could you fix that?

Btw - the serial for this program should be "4682119240".
