Emulation
Guides on emulating older applications

QuickTime 7 had become a significant section of OS X as a whole, tying together new hardware features like CoreImage and CoreVideo for apps to utilize, as well as critically compositing the Desktop screen. For the best possible OS X software combination (e.g. optimized for gaming, or using 3rd party video playback such as VLC et.al. instead of QuickTime Player), it became weighted that one would test out which of the QuickTime versions suites you best. Also note, Apple instituted a major change in CoreVideo behavior from OS X 10.5.5 (& before) going into 10.5.6 & up.

Leopard OS X 10.5 was built with QuickTime 7.2.1 minimum. All QuickTime updater package versions allow installation on all Leopard OS versions 10.5.0 thru 10.5.8 with the possible exception of QT 7.7.0 untested installation requirement (may be only 10.5.8).

The 7.5.5 "Compatibility Update" can be added to QuickTime 7.2.1 thru 7.5.5 and it contains solely a new "H264.component" but Apple claims this merely "improves iChat compatibility".

v7.7.0 built 2011/07/15 - after Apple had ended most Leopard development; Apple made the download available Aug 4, 2011.
