Install and restore system discs for Mac mini (early 2005):

This install set contains the two .cdr image files of a Single and Dual layer DVD that shipped with my Mac mini G4/1.42 - This set can also double as an install set for the Mac mini G4/1.25 GHz PPC Mac of 2005.

It comprises of; Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, Mac OS 9.2.2 for the Classic environment, the Apple Hardware Test software for this Mac, plus bundled software that shipped with these Mac mini G4's.

  1. Mac OS X Install Disc 1: Mac OS version 10.4, AHT version 1.0, Disc version 1.0, 2Z691-5455-A
The .cdr disc image file is in 5 parts, which will need recombining before use: Part 1 is in a .zip archive that extracts to a folder. Move the remaining part files, *.002 to *.005 into this extracted folder. There is an additional "Merge.app" utility included in the folder to help with the recombination of these following part files:
    • DL #1: Part 1 of 5 for Mac mini Mac OS X Install Disc 1
    • DL #2: Part 2 of 5 for Mac mini Mac OS X Install Disc 1
    • DL #3: Part 3 of 5 for Mac mini Mac OS X Install Disc 1
    • DL #4: Part 4 of 5 for Mac mini Mac OS X Install Disc 1
    • DL #5: Part 5 of 5 for Mac mini Mac OS X Install Disc 1
  2. Mac OS X Install Disc 2: Disc version 1.0, 2Z691-5499-A
The .cdr disc image file is in 8 parts, which will need recombining before use:
Part 1 is in a .zip archive that extracts to a folder. Move the remaining part files, *.002 to *.008 into this extracted folder. There is an additional "Merge.app" utility included in this folder to help with the recombination of these following part files:
    • DL #6: Part 1 of 8 for Mac mini Mac OS X Install Disc 2
    • DL #7: Part 2 of 8 for Mac mini Mac OS X Install Disc 2
    • DL #8: Part 3 of 8 for Mac mini Mac OS X Install Disc 2
    • DL #9: Part 4 of 8 for Mac mini Mac OS X Install Disc 2
    • DL #10: Part 5 of 8 for Mac mini Mac OS X Install Disc 2
    • DL #11: Part 6 of 8 for Mac mini Mac OS X Install Disc 2
    • DL #12: Part 7 of 8 for Mac mini Mac OS X Install Disc 2
    • DL #13: Part 8 of 8 for Mac mini Mac OS X Install Disc 2
Compatibility
Architecture: PPC PPC (Carbonized)

Note: The two ".zip" part files require using the built-in Mac OS X Archive Utility, to correctly extract the contents. Using any other unpacker will give poor results.
That is: Use only the built-in Mac OS X Archive Utility to extract these two files.

Thank you. I was able to successfully burn my discs. Unfortunately, I discovered that the internal drive has some issues. It can't burn, and can't seem to read single layer discs. I was able to read and mount dual layer discs (I burned Disc 1 to a Dual layer for an additional test). But I could only write to discs using a USB burner. I really wanted to boot to that drive to completely restore the computer, but I guess I'll have to figure that out another day. Really writing to give extra thanks for you taking the time so quickly to help me.

but how do I burn .cdr images? I have OSX 10.4.11

On 10.4.x you will have the "Disk Utility" app located in Applications > Utilities, use that.

  1. Recombine the part files as described, to create the .cdr DVD images.
  2. When done, immediately check the locked status of the .cdr's, ensuring the images are locked, before doing anything else with them.
  3. Start up the Disk Utility app and drag a locked .cdr's icon over into the lower left part of the Utility's window to add it's name to the list of disks.
  4. Select it's name in the lower part of the Utility's window to highlight it.
  5. Click "Burn" and when requested to, insert a blank DVD into the burner. Disk 2 will require a Dual Layer DVD blank.

Note: Step 2 is very important. If the images get mounted onto a desktop unlocked, the Finder will write to them (update time stamps and add extra invisible files into the mix). This is usually enough to turn a Mac OS install image file into an unbootable useless waste of CD/DVD media. Start-over with Step 1., if this is the case.

Good luck.

Probably a N00b question, but how do I burn .cdr images? I have OSX 10.4.11 and I can't seem to find anything that works. Thanks in advance, and GREAT upload.

The original 10.3.7 disc set for this Mac has been archived at the Internet Archive.

Hello soudesune. Besides the 10.3.7 disc at the IA, linked above, I've since found another 10.3.7 disc, at the IA. - This one is for Mac mini 10.3.7 install disc 1 v.1.0 from Dec, 2004 (shipped Jan 2005).

The one linked up in the page description above, is for install disc 1 v1.1. I can only assume that v1.1 is for the 2nd rollout of the Mac mini G4 and that the v1.0 link in this post is for the very 1st rollout of the mini G4. It is also smaller in size by approx. 1.75GB's (but still Dual Layer at 5.72GB). - [Edit] I've updated the description in the page above, to reflect this info.

Additionally there is also the "Mac OS 9 install DVD for Mac mini. Because of it's ID number, it must have shipped with the 1st v1.0 Install disc. All it has on it is Mac OS 9 General (for several language groups).

What I cannot find tho', is any indication of an Install disc 2 for the original Mac mini. I assume that because the main disc is labelled "Install disc 1" that there may be a disc labelled Install disc 2, but if there was a disc 2, I cannot find it amongst the IA collection.

I guess that one could start by installing from disc 1 and see what else it may ask for. Plus, if you really want the 1st original disc for the Mac mini then you may want the smaller v1.0 disc instead.

[Edit] It appears to be complete. Install disc 1, v1.0 and the Mac OS 9 install disc for Mac mini (also v1.0) are the complete install DVD sets for the original Mac mini G4 release.

The original 10.3.7 disc set for this Mac has been archived at the Internet Archive.

That link to Archive.org is slooooooooooooooooooow. It took me 18 hours to download and it's a dual-layer Toast file (it's 7.5Gb big!).
If anyone has the install DVD for the first mac mini G4 (10.3.7), would they do me a favour and upload it please?

Thanks very much

mg's AHT-for-Macmini page is missing AHT v1.0 and if somebody will extract AHT v1.0 from this here disc one, record the root file info part number in the filename, it'll cause the AHT-for-Macmini page to become completed with all (both) versions of AHT. I won't do the transfer, just sayin.
