For Mac OS X
Guides on emulating older applications

An AppleScript application guaranteed to contain the worlds shortest AppleScript script Wink

Inspired by a posting made by a "Tom", some untold years ago, in Bob LeVitus's "Dr. Mac's" forum and relived here in the Macintosh Garden for all of its former gory glory.

What does it do?

Primarily it invokes the classic Apple Menu in OS X, as found in Mac OS 9.
It will also launch Classic in Mac OS X, if it is not already running.

How to install it:

  1. Extract from the ".sit" and copy "Classic Menus" into your "Applications (Mac OS 9) > Utilities folder".
  2. Launch "Classic Menus" by double-clicking its icon (if Classic isn't running beforehand, Classic will also start up).
  3. Right-click "Classic Menus" in the Dock and choose to keep it in the Dock.

How to use it:

With access to Classic Menus kept in the Dock, you only need to click the Classic Menus icon once, to either launch Classic and/or bring the Classic Apple Menu menu to the fore.

Hint: You can add aliases of folders and items into the classic Apple Menu Items folder for quick access to your classic files (you may need to re-launch Classic to see and access them).

Architecture: 68k

68k encoded but is only suitable for running in OS X Classic mode.

What Mac OS X versions need this?

Any Mac OS X version from 10.0 to 10.2.8

It also runs in 10.3 to 10.4.11 but use of it there is unnecessary. In Mac OS's from 10.3 to 10.4.11, a system default Classic "9" menu can be set permanently in the menu bar. In 10.2.8 and earlier Mac OS X's, there was no such menu available to users, and you also needed to open the System Preferences to launch Classic. So, for those earlier OS's this Classic Menu app is a real bonus.
