BinHex 5.0 was the successor to BinHex 4.0 by Yves Lempereur. The output had been changed from BinHex format (.hqx) to MacBinary I (.bin, or occasionally .macbin) after the author helped to develop the newer format with Dennis Brothers (of MacTEP) and Harry Chesley (of PackIt). It never gained wide support, with version 4.0 retaining its popularity over the newer format.

With a registration fee of $10, the program was released as shareware.

Earlier versions:
BinHex 2.0
BinHex 4.0

This is one of the "must-have" utilities to use Macintosh software from the Internet, so it is provided here in both a 400KB MFS disk image which can be written to a single-sided double-density Macintosh floppy disk on any computer with a variable-speed floppy drive, then used on a Macintosh 128K or 512K, or mounted in a Macintosh emulator, and in MacBinary format for general purpose.
