Comments
Panic quietly released an open source Swift rewrite of Audion two days ago, for macOS 10.12 and later.
It's lacking a few features of Audion 3, though (of course) someone could add them back if they were particularly interested in working with Panic. The source is all GPLv3.
OMG, the "True Story of Audion" is a fascinating read. So well-written, too.
But f$#k, was not becoming iTunes or not joining Apple really worth it? Especially during that time? Though missing the iTunes boat wasn't part of their choosing, unlike when they decided not to join Apple, it sounded as if they wouldn't have accepted becoming iTunes either, by the time I finished reading the whole thing.
I have a Mbook Pro that I've "downgraded" to 10.6.8, so I can continue to use this software
Not entirely true. I downgraded so I could continue to use PPC apps under Rosetta (including Audion).
Alas, I was forced to "upgrade" from Mac OS 10.6.8 up to Yosemite (10.10.10) a few years back, and Audion quit working, so I switched to Swinsian, which, amazingly enough, easily imported a few of my Audion playlists!
Unfortunately I missed one or two, and after a few updates to Swinsian, it no longer can read my old Audion playlists.
Thanks for the "Easter-egg" info & screenshots, Laurier.
Added two more screenshots and the author's name.
To see the author's screenshoot; Press and hold "Option" and clic "About" in the Apple menu.
Work very well with OS 9.2.2 CD,MP3 and Radio url.
All 3 MP3 records encoders work very well but i prefer to use the include Lame encoder.
I still think the best MP3 player ever for MacOS 9 was MacAmp Lite (1.5.1). This was the ONLY MP3 player that didn't stop playing when ejecting a disc/floppy.
I am using Audion to play the files from my Unix volume with SheepShaver, occasionally.
Audion will play all suitable files for me from Ext4, NTFS or FAT drives.
The
"Classic" PPC version is also available free at the Audion web site on the download page- "Audion 3.0.2a for Mac OS 8/9.sit.bin [2.1 MB] Mac OS 8/9. Free version."http://www.panic.com/audion/download.html<-- Edit 2015 - dead link.I found this one to be the best mp3 player for OS9 and below, simply because it's easy to use but won't take up as many ressources as iTunes does. Highly recommend it!
There is also a Free Mac OS X version still available from the original Audion website:
