AppleShare Client is a system extension that allows you to communicate with AppleShare servers.
AppleShare Client 3.8.8 (Download #7) is the latest version Apple distributed independently on their web site, and the last version for which release notes appear to exist.
Later versions such as 3.9.2, 3.9.3 and 3.9.4 are known to have been included on the Classic system software disks for late-model OS X machines.
Download #5 is the AppleShare Client 3.8.3, which according to the accompanying ReadMe is the highest version to support Mac OS 7.6.1.
Download #6 is the AppleShare Client 3.8.6, which according to the accompanying ReadMe, supports Mac OS 8.1 (which is also the last OS running on 68k Macs)
Download #8 is the second-latest version known to exist, 3.9.3, extracted from the restore DVD of a PowerBook G4 Titanium 867MHz.
Download #9 is the latest version known to exist, 3.9.4, extracted from the iBook G4 (Late 2004) OS 9 restore DVD.

I’ve given AppleShare Client 3.9.4 (from the iBook G4 (Late 2004) OS 9 restore DVD) a go and, indeed, the password issue seems to be resolved; the saved passwords are no longer truncated in Keychain Access! I think my network needs improvements to domain name resolution, though, as it fails to re-use the credentials, I think because I have to connect by IP address.
Since I’ve already done the work, I’ll try to StuffIt and Binhex up these other versions and upload them here, since it might save someone a few gigabytes of downloading in the future.
I’ve been on a bit of a quest to find the newest AppleShare client that exists; 3.8.8 is the newest Apple distributed separately, but newer versions (including a 3.9 line) ship with many later systems’ OS 9 installations. My PowerBook G4 Titanium, for example, has 3.9.3.
3.9.3, though, in my experience has an odd bug with password handling; if your password is too long, it gets truncated when added to the keychain, meaning later re-use will just fail and ask for the password again. Oddly, this is something the release notes for 3.8.6 and 3.8.8 appear to address... so you’d think I’d be fine!
In any case, I was curious if there was a newer version which, just maybe, might fix my problem.
The newest server release, AppleShare IP 6.3.3 v1.3, includes the same AppleShare Client 3.8.8 as this page, so that’s a bust.
I figured a later model might help, so I grabbed a couple of the Power Macintosh G4 MDD discs (and one not on the Garden), but they shipped with AppleShare Client 3.9.2. Newer than the separate release, but still older.
Finally, I found the monstrously large iBook G4 (Late 2004) OS 9 restore DVD, this version was a winner; it includes AppleShare Client 3.9.4, with a 2003 copyright date (all others are marked 2002 or earlier). I’m going to have to give this one a go and see if it helps. Unfortunately, no versions past 3.8.8 come with any sort of public-facing change log, so I’m just sort of hoping for fixes. We’ll see!
So, yeah, I can confirm the existence of AppleShare clients versioned 3.9.2, 3.9.3 and 3.9.4. Will update you on how I go.
Appleshare Ip is the AppleShare server, when it first introduced support for IP protocols, over LocalTalk used in earlier versions. If you really want to find out more Apple still puts the manuals up, try the Getting Started - https://support.apple.com/en_US/manuals/appleremotedesktop
Actually, I think we were both wrong. You linked me to the server software to run an AppleShare server, though to be fair it includes client version 3.5. What I was looking for was the client component, which is basically just a system extension in your extensions folder which enables you to connect to servers and compatibles. I managed to find 3.8 here: http://asa.max1zzz.co.uk/English-North_American/Macintosh/Networking-Com...
however the 3.8.8 download (which happens to be PPC only) mentions the last 68k version as being 3.8.6. I also have no idea what AppleShare IP is.
Hi 3371-Alpha,
May be the last 68k compatible version is here :

Is this the last 68k compatible version of appleshare?
