Guides on emulating older applications

The Apple DVD Player is a full-featured, software only DVD player for Mac OS 9.1 and later. This version adds unified support for all Macintosh G3 and G4 models that shipped with AGP graphic display cards, including support for both the ATI and Nvidia graphics cards. It is not compatible with the DVD hardware in the Power Macintosh G3, PowerBook G3, and Power Mac G4 (PCI graphics) series computers. - Unless patched for use on unsupported hardware, then you can use this software on those Macintosh models and others.

Architecture: PPC

For Mac OS 9.1+

It is possible to have this (patched version) working on Mac OS 8.6 (and perhaps earlier) if you replace the 8.6 Apple CD/DVD Driver, ISO9660 File Access, Foreign File Access & UDF Volume Access Extensions with newer copies from a Mac OS 9.1 installation. - I'm able to view DVD's on a beige G3 with a Rage Pro 128 PCI graphics card, the patched DVD Player, plus the CD/DVD driver extensions from Mac OS 9.1, now running OK on a Mac OS 8.6 system.

Does anybody have the unsupported hardware patch for DVD player on OS X? I can't find it anywhere.

This was one of my first attempts at "Tinkering" with my Mac G3. I had OS 8.6, and the DVD player for that one had a lot of problems with sound-sync. I couldn't get this to work in that system - BUT I tried copying the DVD extensions that come with this one and OS9 (from a friend's machine) into 8.6 and IT WORKED! Perfect playback.

@MTT Yes, Mac OS 9.2.2 with its ROM file patched for the mini, to be more precise. Smile

@Roman343 I didn't have a popping-noise-during-playback issue like that, when I rewatched my Shaolin Soccer DVD this January. If it's a system sound, disabling system sound for menu selections etc. could fix this? (Those sounds are fun, but get annoying real quick for me.)

It depends on what the problem really is.

Hey, the patched version worked under the Mac mini G4!

I'm guessing you're referring to running this on your patched Mac mini that allows the mini to run under Mac OS 9.2.2, natively.

If so, that's good news and good to know, Jatoba.

1st I want to say - TAKE THAT Jobs, OS 9 works great! Has anyone experienced a popping sound when you play DVD's ? This something thats been with me ever since my OS 9 inception going back to 2000-2001. I can't seem to remember a cure to this.

Question.. an issue that has been with me since 2000-2001 having to do with DVD Player 2.7 is the popping noise. I remember using some tool or program to eliminate the popping sound. Does anyone know how to eliminate it ? Given its 20 years later, I am just happy something plays on my newly installed Mac OS 9.2.2 Smile

Sadly, iTunes does not play - though I am sure there is a way to get the script to point to apple's server to play it. Sure would like to listen to Radio while i rebuild my collection.

Hey, the patched version worked under the Mac mini G4! It was one of the only things that didn't work on the mini specifically, but I didn't know it was a more "general" issue!

Contrary to before, the player actually opens now (rather than quitting with an error). Now, to find and try some DVD. (Do VCDs AKA Video CDs also count?)

[Edit: And it works! Smile My Shaolin Soccer DVD is playing on the mini thanks to that patch. On the other hand, VCDs I tested didn't work, though maybe a different program can handle those.]

Perhaps it's because I upgraded the optical drive from the factory Apple unit.

@PowerMacZach: That would be the reason. Glad the patch worked for you too.

The patched version is a great piece of software for playing DVDs on unsupported hardware! I'm now able to watch DVDs on my Power Macintosh G3 (Blue & White). I'm not sure why the regular Apple DVD Player wouldn't work with my machine, despite having the decoder daughterboard on my video card. Perhaps it's because I upgraded the optical drive from the factory Apple unit.
