Emulation
Guides on emulating older games

X-Plane 8 is the last a PPC Mac compatible version of the comprehensive flight sim (Version 9.30 is the last PPC Compatible version). It offers accurate flight models, a wide scope in aircraft and a versatile set of aircraft types and weather conditions. Users can add new aircraft and scenery. Check out the handbook for more info - or go ahead and land at any of 18,000 airports across the world, with realistic scenery. You can even land on Mars, thanks to the Mars Orbiting Laser Altimeter.

If you'd like to play the most up to date X-Plane version on your modern Mac / PC, check this link here.

Scenery:
The main game (to be uploaded) includes the scenery World (generation 7) and USA (generation 8 - including every single paved road in the country). You'll be asked at the installation if you'd like to install them. Be aware that it increases the minimum required RAM to 512 MB.

CD-ROM drive (8.0x) or DVD drive (8.06+)
USB joystick or keyboard/mouse

Linux:
Linux system requirements are the same as of the Windows version
LinuxPPC system requirements are the same as of the Macintosh version

Note:
The system requirements above are for running with the "Generation-7 scenery option" (an option for version 8 of X-Plane). However, if you turn on the "Generation-8 scenery option" in the "rendering options" screen, then you must double the RAM system requirements on the Macintosh because all the details take a big amount of RAM!
(The Windows machines are currently able to cache the data away using less RAM, so the system requirements do not go up for Windows machines using the Generation-8 scenery)

I got this to run on my iMac G5 with 10.4.11. When trying to install it on my Mac Pro running 10.6.8, the installer quits with an error.

Thanks for looking into it mrdav. It's hard to find info for what platform this software supports (Classic and/or OS X). Even their online (web archive) System Requirements mention hardware only, but not the OS.

mrdav's picture
by mrdav - 2019, September 21 - 5:45am

The Installer does not run for me in OS 9. Everything in the on-disc information indicates OS X. I have changed the system specs.

EDIT: My comments above relate only to the game in the Toast image. However, the download for v.8.0.1 runs in Mac OS 9 and maybe others will too. So I am reinstating OS 9 as a system on the page.

That's good to know it worked for you. Thanks, mrdav.

I see in the page description it states "For Mac OS 9 - Mac OS X". Is that correct and this runs on OS 9 as well?

by mrdav - 2019, September 21 - 12:13am

Your method worked for me, Mike. Thanks. I did not know that there was a size limit on standard zips. Applications like Archive Utility and BetterZip obviously avoid this limit.

MikeTomTom's picture
by MikeTomTom - 2019, September 20 - 1:46pm

I guess it depends on the zip format used in creating the archive. Standard zip has a limit of 4GB, but if it contains Zip64 extensions in the zip, then it can exceed this limit greatly.

Something in the X-plane zip file on this page is not liked by the commandline zip either. Running "zip -v" on the file gave these errors:

macbook:XPlane mike$ zip -v XPLANE-toast.zip
zip warning: unexpected signature on disk 0 at 321031221

zip warning: archive not in correct format: XPLANE-toast.zip
zip warning: (try -F to attempt recovery)

zip error: Zip file structure invalid (XPLANE-toast.zip)

Anyway, it's good to have other options if you need them and I was glad that the built in Archive Utility was able to extract the zip OK.

Thanks, Mike. I will do it that way for this one. However, it is still a mystery for me because I routinely split zips that exceed 4GB and can recombine and unpack with either The Unarchiver or BetterZip

EDIT: See for example Battlestations: Midway. The Unarchiver has no problem with the 8 GB zip in 7 parts

MikeTomTom's picture
by MikeTomTom - 2019, September 20 - 9:22am

Alas, removing the underscores did not solve the problem.

Ah, mrdav I see what the issue is. The combined part files are in excess of 4GB. There lie's the problem. Unarchivers have problems with Mac OS X zip files that exceed that traditional zip file size limit.

The files are OK, but to extract safely, I used the Terminal and cat to combine and then the OS X Archive Utility to unzip, as this can handle zipped files in excess of 4GB.

In Terminal I cd'd into the folder holding the 3 part files and entered this command:

cat X*.* > XPLANE-toast.zip

When done, I quit Terminal and used the built-in Archive Utility to unzip. It worked fine and I am able mount the .toast OK with Toast - It mounts as hybrid two partitions, Mac and Win.

Did you remove those underscores surrounding ".zip" from their file-names? I think they would give those two unarchive apps grief. I'll try DL'ing them myself otherwise, and give 'em a go.

Has anyone been able to unzip the three parts of the Toast image (DLs 1 - 3)? With the three parts all in one folder, dragging the .001 file to either BetterZip or The UnArchiver produces an error for me. The Unarchiver error is that the file is incomplete.

Congrats ! Wink May be someone could then reupload it in one piece, as I don't know if I could. Have u the MD5 checksum of the image ? It will help to know if the file is correct...

So that's it - I finally managed to upload the DVD in three segments (1.5GB, 1.5GB and 1.2 GB). Join them together after downloading and you got yourself a working X-Plane 8 DVD.

This was by far the hardest upload and I've had my fair share of uploading FMV-Mac games. Enjoy flying with the possibly best PPC Flight-Sim for the Mac Smile

somebody else is already about to upload it now?

It's only me here. I am uploading the preinstalled version 8.5 as my connection is working better today... May be someone can help u to reupload the splitted files in one piece. I don't know if I can, due to my own bandwidth, but if it works, I'm still here for helping u. Smile

I don't like the idea of split files for various reasons, yet in this case there might be no way around it. I've split the file into chunks of about 1.5GB but it looks like somebody else is already about to upload it now? By the way, I checked, my version of X-Plane is 8.05.

MacTouch's picture

@Bolkonskij

The best way here is to split the image in parts before attempting to upload it here. Have u tried with BetterZip (recommended by mrdav besides that) or another equivalent software ?

I don't know what's your exact number version... But version 8.6 is still for sale like the 9. Smile
My Internet connection is actually down & out. It takes near 8 hours I think before I can upload in good conditions. Sometimes, uploading is faster than downloading with it...

Bolkonskij's picture
by Bolkonskij - 2017, July 25 - 7:13pm

@MacTouch That would be certainly better than nothing.

I tried another time to upload the stuff here from a modern Mac Pro but it would time out again and start from the very beginning. My internet connection seems too unreliable and slow. It's frustrating.

Anyone here in Germany with a fast internet connection willing to upload the beast if I snail mail him a USB stick with the toast image on it and you send it back to me afterwards? Gotta get this one up here somehow Smile

MacTouch's picture

I have an installer for the version 8.4 & also an installed 8.5 version. This one requires a DVD of the game, but works like a demo otherwise. It comes from another Garden user, not me. May be I can upload that on this page ?

I feel with you. Any chance for Windows7/Firefox on your side?
I did acquire a spare Optiplex DT 745 for about € 30 the other day. Absolutely not cutting edge, but simple and reliable.

Man! This is really frustrating! I had 4GB of this 4.4 GB file uploaded when TenFourFox crashed and all those hours of uploading were lost. I'm not sure I'm ready for another attempt Sad Anyone waiting for this?
