Emulation
This game works with: SheepShaver, Basilisk II,

The third version of Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? was released on the heels of the end of the hit PBS Kids game show in 1996. This game included hundreds of QuickTime videos of Lynne Thigpen playing The Chief. This was the last version of the game to follow the "classic" formula of the series, but much of the game, especially the "warrant" portion, was heavily redesigned. Version 3.5, released in 1998, added speech welcoming the player to each country, a talking translator, and an "ACME Global Language Link-Up" satellite that quizzed the user on the local language. (Wikipedia)

After The Learning Company's purchase of Brøderbund, the game was re-released (version 3.5.3) under the new "The Worlds of Carmen Sandiego" banner, with an improved launcher/installer, and with the Learning Company logo replacing that of Brøderbund in the intro video.

A Spanish translation, titled ¿Dónde en el mundo estará Carmen Sandiego?, was also released. Despite being labeled as version 3.5 and bearing the same "El mundo de Carmen Sandiego" branding as the English-language re-release, it did not include the Global Language Link-Up, though did include the other additions.

Version 4.0, released exclusively to the school market in 2004, was billed as including ten more countries than 3.5, as well as updated geographic information. However, it actually includes the same 50 countries; it also omits the opening animation and has slightly worse graphics where text is included. On the other hand, it does run on PowerPC OSX, and up to Windows 7.

Despite their different version numbers, all of the versions on this page are essentially the same game, with only the minor differences noted above.

This is the final edition of the original branch of the game. Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? Treasures of Knowledge is an entirely different game.

For anyone that may care I got World 3.0 to run flawlessly.

I used Basilisk II (tried with Sheepshaver but couldn't make it).

Follow these instructions: https://emaculation.com/doku.php/basilisk_ii_setup

The key is to mount the ISO and it is easy: In Basilisk II GUI add the World 3.0 file (the GUI will read the Mac ISO and the World 3.0 ISO separately). Then click start and you will see the Carmen Sandiego icon on your desktop.

Click on the installer and install.

Change the monitor colors to 256.

Enjoy!

IIGS_User, I've gotten them to work before, so it's possible, just not consistent and I don't know where the fault is. Apparently it's just transient *le sigh*

You have to download the SheepShaver emulator to run it. It's a huge pain and I'm still having issues getting it to run properly.

Can someone spoonfeed me instructions on how to get this game running. So many links it's overwhelming. I'm not great at computers. I run Windows 10. I am dying to play this game.

Finally got the game running, but none of the videos work?

See the same issue with Escape from Monkey Island when running in Mac OS X 10.3+

Finally got the game running, but none of the videos work? The loading video and the first video of The Chief didn't show up. Anyone have any ideas?

Should have divided into separate entries for classic Mac OS versions and OS X ones.

Hey I'm having issues installing this with SheepShaver. I get to the end of the install process and a window pops up for a fraction of a second showing how many items are left to install but installation never finishes. Anyone have any ideas? I'm running OS 9, and the drive I'm installing it to has plenty of room, the installer just glitches out and can't seem to finish!

You need to install one of the two emulators on-line here.
Baslilisk or Sheepshaver.

I believe somewhere here there may be pre-built folders so you don't have to go through the entire installation process.

Thanks for uploading! Version 4.0 (uploaded in Late 2015) of Where in the World is Carmen San Diego worked really well as a full install on my 15 inch PowerBook G4 1.5 GHz Early 2005 running OS X 10.4.11 Tiger, and as a minimal install on my iMac G3 (Indigo, 2000, 350 MHz) running OS 9.2.1 and my iBook G3 (Dual USB, Mid-2001) running OS X 10.4.11 (also). However, as fm2 pointed out Versions 3.0 and 3.5 of both the World and USA versions of Carmen San Diego usually freezes (on Mac OS 9.2) upon launch. I personally recommend to use it on Basilisk II or on a real 68040 Quadra-based Macintosh running System 7.1 up to Mac OS 8.1, but I have not tested Version 3.5 on my iMac G3 running OS 9.2.1, but it would work on older versions of Mac OS prior to version 9, so I'm guessing that fm2 has a problem with Version 3 of this title that he is playing. On a side note, on the OS X version of Carmen San Diego, the Fax pane appears to have some graphical error when you try to open it, but the Mac OS 9 version looks OK to me. Other than that, It's an excellent computer game of my childhood! And thanks again for the upload!

I just checked and they are all hybrid disc images. The version on max1zzz's server is 3.5.3. The closely related version on the internal server is 3.5 and the files in both 3.5 and 3.5.3 disc images are clearly different (different icons to start with)

IIGS_User's picture

Which version is the one at max1zzz's server, and are the other files at the top-most position also hybrid versions?

max1zzz's server does seem to be down at present. This is unusual as it is normally up and running. I suggest you try again in a day or so, or try at Adventure Legends

Hi I am trying to download the Hybrid version for PC but when I try it says the server is down. Is there only certain times when you have your server running? Please let me know because I want these games so bad and have searched everywhere for them. Thx

by fm2 - 2015, May 6 - 12:39pm

Only application that works for me under 9.2.2 is installer. Game freeze on loading screen.

The installer works for me on a G3 running Mac OS 9.2.2

Yeah, I can unzip it and see the Carmen Sandiego World Installer, Readme, Multimedia Extensions and Desktop folder, but I can't open the installer. I've also downloaded SheepShaver but that won't open either

Well, the download is OK and unzips for me. Maybe there is an issue with your ISP connection? I used to have problems in certain circumstances (uploading only) because my connection was too slow and the transfer did not finalise properly.

I've downloaded the 3.5 twice and both times I haven't been able to open it because it's "incomplete or damaged". Would you be able to re-upload it?

Would anyone be able to help me with downloading this? I've been looking for this version of this game FOREVER.
