Emulation
This game works with: SheepShaver, Basilisk II,

This is a modern remake started in 1995 by Leon McNeill and still being updated today at "www.lairware.com".

Ultima III was first released in 1983 for Apple II. Ultima III has been available for the Macintosh (1985), Atari 800/XL/XE, Commodore 64/128, Amiga 500/1000/2000, Atari 520ST/1040ST, Nintendo Entertainment System & IBM PC platforms.

More information is located at the old Mac Garden site, still archived at Archive.org.

The 1st download is v1.3 (1996) for OS9 or older and is no longer available on the authors website. Over there they got v1.4.2 (2000) for OS9 or older, v2.0 (2007) for OSX older than Tiger, v2.2 (2011) for Tiger and Leopard, v2.3.1 (2014) for Snow Leopard and newer.

Here our 2nd and 3rd downloadable accessories are quite old, 1995-1996, and appear to be meant for this remake (not the original 1980s game). The 3rd download (1995) really is a classic app patch so is probably very limited to which version it might apply!

Added a scenario editor I found. Only tried it for two minutes, but sure seemed nice!

The price at Lairware is now $5 !!

It has some cool stuff built in, like different game tiles for different systems, updated graphics, auto combat (which you can toggle), auto heal, etc. I'd head over there and pony up the $5 if I were you!!

There are different versions? That would explain the availability of the b/w screenshot shown here.

Is the original 1986 version available, like, anywhere at all?

Thanks. Something subjectively better than personal opinion written before.

That's an, uh, interesting little summary for this game. Sniping at some guy nobody knows and finding oblique ways to restate the game's age. That's really useful to everyone. I hope nobody minds my paring this down to relevant factual info.

This is the best port of Ultima III I've ever seen. The black and white screenshot isn't from this download. The version here is a full color, enhanced port by LairWare which is still available for purchase for $15.

The newest version, 2.0, works on Mac OS X and there is also an updated version, 1.4.2, of the classic Mac version available.

The download here is the shareware unregistered version so its all good. I think I'm going to buy this because it really is the best version of this game in my opinion.

The b/w screen implies this game should run in Mini vMac as well, but this must be wrong.
The Readme file included with this d/l tells:
Motorola 68020 processor type minimum
Mac OS System version 7.0 or newer
256 colours by 640x480 pixels.

My attempts to test this game in Mini vMac results in an 'abnormal situation' within Mini vMac:
'Coprocessor not installed'

The 33k download is a character editor for Ultima III that gives your characters a boost, or turns them into PURE GODS!

The 88k download is the Portrait patch for the Mac version of Ultima III. It replaces the existing portraits in the U3 Graphics file, so be sure to apply it only to a copy.

When we get comments to each file download separately (within the green area)... Smile

I've just added two little helpers I came across the web:

The 88k download is the Portrait patch for the Mac version of Ultima III. It replaces the existing portraits in the U3 Graphics file, so be sure to apply it only to a copy.
