Guides on emulating older games

Total Annihilation (abbreviated Totala or TA) is a real-time strategy video game created by Cavedog Entertainment and released on September 30, 1997 by GT Interactive for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS. It was the first RTS game to feature 3D units and terrain. Two expansion packs were released, The Core Contingency on April 30, 1998 and Battle Tactics on June 30, 1998.
Total Annihilation is no longer sold or supported, due to the bankruptcy of Cavedog. With Gas Powered Games, lead designer Chris Taylor went on to create Supreme Commander, popularly considered the "spiritual successor" of Total Annihilation. A remake of Total Annihilation named Spring, with a completely 3D graphics engine and lacking any fixed camera angle, has also been independently produced.
Total Annihilation is set in the far future in the midst of a galactic war, with battles taking place on the surface of planets and moons. The efforts of the player are centered around constructing a defensive base and an offensive force, and conquering opponents. The player is also concerned with gathering resources, reconnaissance and stealth, and evaluation of units and terrain. Battles take place against AI in a story-driven campaign, with the option of playing against other players in a skirmish mode.

Thanks to abasu1979 for providing the disks from which I made the above images.

The disks labelled "complete" are a bin-cue combination, zip-compressed under OS X. Use toast to burn a physical CD that contains both data (i.e. game) and audio partitions from the bin-cue.

The uploads to the internal server include the 3.1.1 Updater and the 3.1.2b6 public beta updater. My experience is that the 3.1.2b6 updater will work when applied to the CD version (3.1) of the game but aborts with an error if you have applied the 3.1.1 updater first.

Architecture: PPC

I've ran it on Mac OS 8.x and Mac OS 9.x.x, I know nothing more. It may run on OS 7.

I've got a copy of the CDs to spare; if you can provide me with a mailing address, I'll be happy to send them. (Just go to the forums, say:

and click e-mail on the top-right corner of my posts.)

Upon completing a level, an artist's impression of the carnage is displayed. The latest screenshot is one such image, (in this instance, provided after the tenth Core mission). It's one of the little touches that makes Total Annihilation such a splendid game.

Below "Game File", "Add another item" should result in another green download field.

Anyone who wants a copy of this game, may contact me via the forum - i.e.

I've added the Total Annihilation Options Editor file in the Manual category. It would be nice if we had a separate category for additional files like this.

The torrent is corrupted. The img file is only partially there, and if it gets repaired, the graphics is just a ton of stuff all over the screen (poor mac Sad ).

Been doing tons of searching to find another download link, but all the disk images are either corrupted or it's a virus.

Everybody is smart enough to say stuff doesn't work, no one is helpful enough to say what exactly is corrupt/doesn't work. If you take time to say that something doesn't work, please specify so I can fix the torrent.

File corruption:
Some stuff is toast/junk. Can't use sounds. Can't play some maps.

Game performance:
I was using 9.2.2 from the net boot image at Not doing net booting, but if you drill into it far enough you find a system folder and an applications folder you can drag to the hard drive and use for classic stuff. (It can be used to boot but I don't know about that) I was getting probably 1-2 Frames/Second(so it felt like) and my 1.42GHz G4 was running at 100%.
I got some gray discs off of craigslist and installed 9.2 classic off some powerbook G4 discs and it works much better. More like 10 FPS. This is still way low but mostly playable.

Tech level 2:
example; build a level 1 airport, make a level 1 construction aircraft, it can build a level 2 airport which can make advanced construction aircraft.

Link for updater is dead. A google search for "TA312b6Update.sit" gives lots of torrents however it looks like it can be had in other places if you wish to avoid torrents:
2) and navigate around to official patches

I've uploaded a new torrent - just click on the main download button and it will open up TPB link. It has all the updates and expansion packs in it and it has my own images which suppose to extract just fine (It did for me). You may need to use ShrinkWrap and Toast to mount the images.

by Falsesummer - 2009, December 19 - 5:04pm

I am also having problems running the game, it appears to be the same problem as rpangrazio.

I am running an iMac G3 with OS 9.2.2, and have tried extracting the disc image in both OS9 and OSX, and playing it (in OS9) both with and without the expansion files, but always updating to the latest version of the game.

Great Upload! Here is the Latest Patch for TA
You will need at least 3.1 to install this.
Be sure to read the Installer notes before installing.

@rpangrazio, if you still have problems, I could Upload my own CD image, which seems to work fine. Just let me know.

Is anyone else having problems where it reports that certain files had errors extracting? I am running an iMac G4 with OS 9.2.2
