The Battle for Wesnoth is an open source, turn-based strategy game with a high fantasy theme. It features both singleplayer and online/hotseat multiplayer combat. Explore the world of Wesnoth and take part in its many adventures! Embark on a desperate quest to reclaim your rightful throne... Flee the Lich Lords to a new home across the sea... Delve into the darkest depths of the earth to craft a jewel of fire itself... Defend your kingdom against the ravaging hordes of a foul necromancer... Or lead a straggly band of survivors across the blazing sands to confront an unseen evil. (Official Web Site)

The game is probably THE most well-known open source strategy turn-based game. Think Panzer General meets Fantasy. It features both single player and online/hotseat multiplayer combat. It comes with lots of campaigns and many more (user generated ones) can be downloaded for free on the internet.

Version 1.0 was released in 2005; hence the date on this page. However, the game is under continual development. Current and legacy binaries can be download from SourceForge here. Version 1.1.1 is the last binary built for PPC before Universal Binaries were provided. Version 1.11.7 is the last Universal Binary built before binaries became Intel-only.

Compatibility
Architecture: PPC x86 (Intel:Mac)

System requirements are vague as they are affected by the system environment in which the game application is built from the source. However it is sort of agreed that v. 1.0.x is compatible with Mac OS X 10.2.8 and it is suggested that v. 1.1 probably requires at least Mac OS X 10.3. It has been reported that version 1.9.4 is the last version to support Mac OS X 10.4.11. At the time of writing, the latest version of the game requires Mac OS X 10.8 at least.

I have found that versions up to 1.4.7 start up OK in Mac OS X 10.6.8 (but with Rosetta for versions up to 1.1.1). I haven’t tested later versions.

You need to go to the SourceForge site (see link in the description above). Binaries going back to 2004 are at https://sourceforge.net/projects/wesnoth/files/wesnoth/

But I will put up v. 1.0.2 and 1.1.1 as they are key versions that are more than 10 years old.

As of 2019, support for OS 10.5 or lower appears to have been dropped as I was unable to find binaries on the official site. It might be wise to upload a binary here.

I have newer version of Battle of Wesnoth. The year of version is 2013 and It universal. I unload new version in 2023.
Because it too new. It need be 10 years to upload on macintosh garden. This version works in Mac OS X 10.4.11 and Mac OS X 10.5.8. Maybe higher OS X.

mrdav edit: We are not allowing uploads to this page. Versions of the game can be downloaded from the officially endorsed SourceForge link in the page description.
