Guides on emulating older games

"Storybook Weaver Deluxe allows you to jumpstart the creative writing process by pasting an image of what you are writing together in a field above your text. You have over 1700 clip art-like objects at your disposal. They can be flipped, shrunk, enlarged, given a sound effect, etc. You can also put them on over 142 backgrounds. Songs can be assigned to each page so a particular theme will play whenever that page is reached.

"Children can easily navigate menus for different categories such as 'Make-Believe People' or 'Animals'.

"After you're done you can print your story out or have your computer read it back."

@ MikeTomTom

-->[Edit] Couldn't help but notice that the CD image has been user modified from what would've been a Mac/Win hybrid CD. Its now Mac HFS only <-----

I think we should delete the user modified version now that I have uploaded a proper hybrid version.

No, it isn't working.
But I appreciate your help.

@lopavillalta: - Basically I tried to follow the steps you outlaid in your 1st post, as I was trying to replicate the error that you were getting.

1. Extracted the ".toast" image from the ".sit" archive.
2. Locked the .toast image
3. Added it as a disk in SheepShaver's "Volumes" list
4. Launched SheepShaver to run Mac OS 9.0.4
5. Opened the SWD disk now mounted on the emulated desktop, and ran the "Install" program.
6. Later discovered that running the SWD program direct from CD also worked OK.

I've since tried it under Basilisk II, running a much earlier Mac OS 7.1.1. It also ran OK on that system. I don't know if you're doing anything wrong, but I am unable to get that -44 error so I can't pinpoint what it is that's at fault for you here.

Hello, thank you both for your help.
Well, I must be doing something wrong. I seem to be unable to successfully install the program into SheepShaver. I was able to install Civilization II and Caesar III, but this...
Would it be too much trouble to have you reiterate step by step instructions on what you did, MikeTomTom?

@lopavillalta: - Not sure why its not working for you, as is. I've just tested this in SheepShaver under Mac OS 9.0.4 and it worked (installed) as it's supposed to, for me.

That is, I mounted the locked CD image as a disk added to SheepShaver's "Volumes" list in the SheepShaver GUI (which if I understand it, is what you did in your step "5. Added into volumes of Sheepshaver preferences.").

Error -44 is supposed to be a "disk locked" type file system error (error -44 wPrErr: diskette is write protected).

Which doesn't make sense to me as I tried running Storybook Weaver Deluxe direct from the mounted locked disk, and that worked OK too.

Anyway, double-clicking "Installer" launched the install process and it installed into my emulated hard drive.

I don't know what you meant by step "3. Made a disk image."; As unstuffing the ".sit" extracts the disk image (toast) already made.

[Edit] Couldn't help but notice that the CD image has been user modified from what would've been a Mac/Win hybrid CD. Its now Mac HFS only - it still includes all of the Win files on the image but they are useless in this form. Note: this does not affect being able to run this program in SheepShaver.

Are you sure you are doing everything on your Sheepshaver drive and not in your unix/swap/transfer drive? If you just drag a file to your desktop from the swap drive it is still on the swap drive. Any operation done on a file in the swap drive will fail. Best bet is to burn a real CD.

So, I've been trying to place this into my emulator-SheepShaver. Although, nothing I seem to be doing is working. I have the "CD" image on the Mac OS 9 desktop, but every time I try to install it into my Mac OS HD, I receive a message saying "Sorry, but a disk related error (-44) has occurred."
Just a little bit frustrated; can't find anywhere what -44 is...
If I can be given step-by-step instructions, perhaps I can see where I went wrong.
1. Downloaded the link above
2. Unstuffed it.
3. Made a disk image.
4. Locked disk image.
5. Added into volumes of Sheepshaver preferences.
6. Quit.
7. Restared SheepShaver.
8. Tried to install. Error.

I think the "x86 (Intel)" above refers to the DOS version of this game included here, not the Macintosh hardware this checkbox is originally intended for.
