aka Spelunky Classic or Spelunky Original

"Legends speak of a Colossal Cave that extends deep underground, so twisted by time that its passages shift like the sand under which it lies... the Cave is said to be filled with fabulous treasures, but also incredible danger!"

Spelunky is a unique platformer with randomized levels that offer a challenging new experience each time you play. Journey deep underground and explore fantastic places filled with all manner of monsters, traps, and treasure. You'll have complete freedom while you navigate the fully-destructible environments and master their many secrets. To stay or flee, to kill or rescue, to shop or steal... in Spelunky, the choice is yours and so are the consequences!

Don't be afraid to die! But also don't be afraid to live! Happy Spelunky-ing!

Note: The included ReadMe files are from the Windows version. The Mac version does not have a level editor.

Maybe the "Secret Challenges" do work in the Mac version. I don't know what the requirements are for them to open, but I just noticed that the first one was now open - "Changing Rooms", which allows you to swap between playing the game as either the male adventurer or the female 'Lady in Red' character (as shown in the fourth screenshot).

It doesn't seem to make any difference to the gameplay, other than the sprites changing for the player and the rescue character, although I haven't completed the game as the 'Lady in Red' to see if the end animations also change.

I still remember when the original Windows version was released! It was a very popular free game from the early 2010 indie era, just like Cave Story for example (which is avaible here AND compatible with PPC computer, unlike Spelunky mac...).

There's a small trick to get these old, Intel 32-bit only Game Maker games to work on macOS Mojave (10.14). They're all signed with an outdated Mac App Store certificate. When run, Mojave will report the game as "damaged and can’t be opened", and then suggest it be moved to the Trash.

To remove the signing, open up a Terminal and run `codesign --remove-signature [path to the app bundle]`, like so:

codesign --remove-signature /Applications/Spelunky/Spelunky.app

Right click on the app to "Open", confirm that yes you do want to open this app, and that should fix it.

A freeware game that is now a bit difficult to find (the source code released at the same time seems to be lost).

A very nice (if a bit tough) platformer. The original Windows version was created by David Yu in GameMaker. This Mac version was partly recreated by idyll using an older version of GameMaker for Mac.

There is a newer "HD" version available for Windows, PlayStation, and Xbox, but personally I think these older graphics are much clearer.
