Sargon V: World Class Chess

Your rating: None Average: 4 (1 vote)
Year released:
Download (10.93 MB)
For System 6.x - System 7.0 - 7.6
This game works with: Basilisk II, Mini vMac

The successor to Sargon IV still offers chess in color or black and white, but the black and white options are more like grey and grey. (No, they didn't forget to create separate 1-bit sprites; those are the separate 1-bit sprites.) Pretend, if you like, that this adds a stimulating new layer of challenge... or get annoyed at game designers who prioritize 'cool' 3D shading over legibility.

Version: 1.0

Sargon IV

Architecture: 68k

Minimum requirements: System 6.0.7 or later, '020 or higher processor to play music, 640x480 resolution for 256 colors.

Crashes in OS 9.2.2.

Thanks again to both of you; I've been looking for this one for quite awhile. Now if I could just get my hands on Psion Chess and make a better archive of that, I would be all chessed out.

ADD: Archive now includes patched version, alternate 2D b/w art, and full documentation in PDF.

Here is the patch to apply to the 'Sargon V' file, with ResEdit :
CODE 10, offset 11F4 : change 3F3C to 6012
CODE 10, offset 12FA : change 3F3C to 601A

You are not exactly right, Winterlast. The protection checks indeed if the prefs file exists AND if it is not corrupted. After installation, the prefs file is NOT generated : the first time the game is launched, the protection runs and asks the manual password. If the answer is correct, the prefs file is generated...and the protection never runs again as long as the prefs file is not corrupted.
My hack allows to bypass the password box for the both cases.
Because of the installation procedure, the patch has to be done on the Sargon V file after the installation.
Another crack by Gael, enjoy !

Interesting: the copy protection is only triggered if there isn't a properly initialized preferences file in the system folder. Since everywhere I tested this I used the installer, blessing the current boot disk with a prefs file, the game never let on that there was any protection. I've seen one-time manual checks, but this is so unobtrusive it's zero-time.

Thank you! Be sure to post the information on how to repeat the procedure so we don't lose it in the mists of time...

@ MCP : I just cracked the game (it was easy, took only a few minutes). I still have to check if everything is OK, and I will post the patch here.

Just FYI, if anyone is working on hacking this or scanning the manual, or plans to, I need to know in the next couple of days, before I spend money and waste time duplicating effort. Let's coordinate our efforts...

I've uploaded a file I found here:
It's for fixing the monochrome graphics to look simpler!

Apparently a password is required to start the game, however...

I don't know of any Mac hack info for this game, but there's a hack for the DOS version here: and info on how it was done:
