Emulation
This game works with: Mini vMac II

Rare Macintosh version of this underrated point & click adventure game. You could call this a Space Quest/Leisure Suit Larry crossover because it somewhat resembles them in their style.

This game doesn't like modern macs, so make sure you have a 68k mac with Mac OS 7.5.5 or lower handy, because you will need to disable the 32-bit addressing mode to play. This can be quite annoying, but it's really the only way to get it to run properly. I had no luck with Basilisk II, but feel free to post your results if you're lucky enough to get it to run through emulation.

Further, you will need to get a copy of the logbook to get around the copy protection screen. I uploaded one from http://www.replacementdocs.com/

[Note]: Runs and plays well in Mini vMac (Mac II variation) see last few screenshots. Mini vMac used is a 256 color Mac II build with 8 MB RAM, running SSW 7.1

Compatibility
Architecture: 68k

System 6.0.7 or later
4MB RAM
12MB Hard Drive space
8 bit color (256 colors)
32 bit Quickdraw
Superdrive (HD Floppy)

I bought a macintosh lc475 and at last with 32-bit addressing mode off i managed to run this great adventure game. I would like to ask if it runs correctly. I mean that there is no sound at the introduction. During the game there is music at some points of the game but for only for some seconds, then it stops. The same at the start menu of the game. Also the intro starts with the dialogue between Rex and the guy at the office and as i mentioned before no sound at all. At the dos version it starts showing Rex arriving with his spaceship. Also the inventory items don't spin round like the dos version. I would like to ask if the game runs correctly because it is pity to miss all these things. Mac version has better fonts and the quality of the music is a lot better but...

I tested two mini vmac version on my computer. I tested the mini vmac 26 in 8mb of ram and 256 colors and mac os 7.5.3 in mini vmac II. I tested the mini vmacIIx-8mb with 256 colors running mac os 7.5.5.
It works in both mini vmac. It works on mac II and mac IIx.

this Mini vMac area needs to differ between Classic and Mac II options.

Yes, the Mini vMac variations choices are now wide (from Macintosh 128K to Macintosh II). And as the now prevalent Mac II build is the only '020 CPU'd variation, it could easily have it's own "Mini vMac II" criteria under the Emulation heading, above.

With the ability of Mini vMac to run as Mac II build, this Mini vMac area needs to differ between Classic and Mac II options.

Links I've found about 32-bit:
Cant turn 32 bit processing off..?
http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/gopher/other/special/help/Macintosh/Macintosh%20System%20FAQ

To use the memory you need to get SSW 7 and turn on 32-bit addressing. If you have a Mac with dirty ROMs (a II, IIx, SE/30, or IIcx) you also need MODE32 for SSW 7.0 or 7.0.1 or the 32-bit enabler for SSW 7.1. Both are free from ftp.apple.com (/dts/mac/mode32 and /dts/mac/sys.soft/7.1.32.bit.enabler)

I installed SSW 7.5 on powerbook 540c and then i erased it and i installed SSW 7.1.1. Both operating systems didn't have option to disable the 32-bit addressing mode. So i didn't manage to run the game correctly.

I have played a while the game via Basilisk in Windows7. I noticed that you cannot hear speech at the introduction like the dos version. Also the dos version has a lot more music than Mac version.

Games like this one are worth a shot with FusionPC. You will need DOSBox or a quite old WIN98 box for using Fusion, but DOSBox is available for many recent hosts. Of course Fusion is slow, but thats what our old 68k machines were like.
The game is running in Fusion with Mac OS 7.1.

oh shit 68k? Im prob outta luck then, unless a PPC performa has a way of running this?

I'm sure you know that your PPC Mac can run 68k software very well, even a bit slowly? Wink

I don't have my PB 540c handy, but it seems to me I tested this on it and it ran fine. Can't remember if I had to do anything special, but my 540c runs 7.1.1 and its memory is maxed out.

I remember both Mac OS 6 and 7 coming with a Control Panel to switch between 24-bit and 32-bit addressing.

It's in the Memory control panel.

Is it possible to disable the 32-bit addressing mode on a powerbook 540c? I am looking for a speed laptop with 68040 cpu.

@Dimitris1980
That's because the game isn't 32-bit clean. I know exactly what you mean because i have the same graphic issues on my G3, G4 and even on my Quadra 800 with 32-bit addressing enabled.
As far as i know, you can't disable the 32-bit addressing on even the earliest PPC macs because of their architecture, that's why you'll need a 68k mac for this game.

To be honest, it's much easier to get the MS DOS version running through DOSBOX on modern machines. Sad but true.
