Return to Castle Wolfenstein is set during World War II, somewhere in Germany. It blends warfare and the occult mixed in with science fiction, bringing together battles waged between opposing regular armies, mummies, undead warriors, demon bosses and mutant horrors. This makes for some very exciting & interesting game play. Single & Multiplayer games to choose from:

Compatibility
Architecture: PPC (Carbonized) x86 (Intel:Mac)

Although the system requirements are as above, I am able to play RtCW on a beige G3 running Mac OS 9.1, specs; 300 MHz, 384 MB RAM & 16MB ATI Rage Pro video (ex PCI G4 tower). - It's slow to load, but the game play is smooth & without stuttering.

The last two downloads are Enemy Territory (RtCW's standalone multiplayer expansion) and its PunkBuster update. Note that despite being a free game, its user keys are no longer being generated for new players. To get around this you have to generate a key at etkey.org.

Hello, about error say ""pak0.pk3" is missing."
Simply copy all main folder to User⁩ › ⁨Library⁩ › ⁨Application Support⁩ › RTCW
for me works, (macMini with Mojave 10.14.4) and when game is opened use in graphic system native, and fullscreen on for a better quality

Hi there,

I hope everybody's fine. Commonly, Mojave is one of some Mac OS preventing you to launch any apps like you want. And as Jatoba has given a relevant advice about SIP settings, I'm guessing just another one. It's quite simple, in "System/Preferences/Security", if not all the apps are not allowed to run (from everywhere), then the system should block (isolate) those apps.
I give you this information, hoping it could help. But it should be another problem too here.

kjbless's picture
by kjbless - 2020, May 12 - 10:53pm

I'm going to retry it again and will also attempt disabling SIP. Let's see if we can get some magic

Jatoba's picture
by Jatoba - 2020, May 12 - 3:56pm

@kjbless Did you try disabling SIP etc. in Mojave? Not sure if it would help in this case, but it does make some apps work again.

If this won't work, then I'm also not sure what else to recommend, other than to retry/double-check MikeTomTom's steps.

MikeTomTom's picture
by MikeTomTom - 2020, May 12 - 10:13am

"pak0.pk3" is missing. Please copy it from your legitimate RTCW CDROM.

@kjbless: Sorry to hear it. I don't have this problem. I also followed the same directions I gave you, for installing v1.51c from the GitHub repository.

Unfortunately I don't have that version of Mac OS that you're using, so I can't test against it to see if it's an OS problem.

Both multi and single mode apps load normally for me, without complaint about missing .pk3 files, so I'm at a loss to suggest anything better for you, at the moment.

kjbless's picture
by kjbless - 2020, May 12 - 8:45am

Update:

Followed all of the directions, everything went smooth then when I went to launch multiplayer I got this message:

"pak0.pk3" is missing. Please copy it
from your legitimate RTCW CDROM.

Also check that your iortcw executable is in
the correct place and that every file
in the "main" directory is present and readable."

Attempted several times to go through the steps and messed around with copying and moving pak0.pk3 ,BUT unfortunately no luck. I'm only interested in playing multiplayer, but I tried launching single player and got the same error. Any advice @MikeTomTom ?

I had it running well under Sierra and High Sierra on my 2014 Intel Mac Mini, but like most 3D games it quickly gives me bad motion sickness, so I couldn't get very far. I also know of someone else got it running in Mojave (don't know what Mac, but they were using an external GPU).

by MikeTomTom - 2020, May 12 - 4:16am

@kjbless: YW and I do hope it goes OK for you, too.

Actually, I'm interested in knowing what the limitations of ioRtCW is, for the Mac OS's it runs on.

As it's a Universal Binary, it does run on PPC Leopard and Intel Macs from Leopard onwards. I know it runs well on Snow Leopard but I don't know how it goes on newer Mac OS's.

So good luck with your install and get back to us if it works for you (or not). Hopefully, it does.

You are THE MAN. I'm going to follow all the steps and see what results I get. Crossing my fingers. Thank you for breaking that down and explaining everything. I'll keep you posted. Thank you again really appreciate it!

MikeTomTom's picture
by MikeTomTom - 2020, May 11 - 1:47am

Anyway you could explain these steps in a more detailed manner?

Regarding running RtCW on recent Mac OS's. Here goes...
You'll need to download these three files (if you haven't done so as yet):

  1. From this page, above; DL #1: "rtcwolfen-mac.zip" (634.18 MB)
  2. DL from this GitHub page, the ioRtCW v1.51c file named; "iortcw-1.51c-mac-ub.zip".
  3. DL the 1.41 patch data for all languages named; "patch-data-141.zip", from the same GitHub page.

All current and previous versions of ioRtCW can be found via the Releases page, but you will need to try the latest version release which currently stands at 1.51c, as of the time of this post. This may change in the future, so also check the Releases page for updates.

  1. Unzip the "iortcw-1.51c-mac-ub.zip" file and place its extracted folder to where you keep games or whatever, then open its folder so you can see its contents: "Docs, iowolfmp.app, iowolfsp.app and main".
  2. Unzip the "rtcwolfen-mac.zip" file and open its extracted folder to expose the included "rtcwolfen-mac.iso" disc image file. Double-click this image file to mount it onto your desktop.
  3. Open the mounted "Wolfenstein" disc image and inside you will also see a "Wolfenstein" folder. Open this folder and inside of that you will see a folder named "Main".
  4. Open this "Main" folder and select all of the contents inside, dragging them into the "main" folder located in the "iortcw-1.51c-mac-ub" game folder that you extracted in step 1. It will pay to have both folders visible to make the copying of these files over into the game's "main" folder, easier.
  5. When the file copying ends; Close the mounted Wolfenstein disc's folders and drag its icon to the Trash.
    It's no longer required.
  6. Unzip the "patch-data-141.zip" file and open its extracted folder. Inside is another "main" folder and a "pb" folder. Open the "main" folder and select only the ".pk3" files inside. If you don't have "show all filename extensions" turned on in the Finder then you may 1st need to do this, to locate all of the .pk3 files in there.
Drag all of the selected .pk3 files over into the "main" folder inside of the "iortcw-1.51c-mac-ub" game folder.
  7. You may want the "pb" folder too if you want to play RtCW online. Copy it over into the game folder itself, and not into the "main" folder.

Do all of the above and you should be good to go. Of the two iowolf game player apps; Use iowolfsp.app for single player mode and iowolfmp.app for multiplayer.

Regarding step #6 above: If it's too tedious locating just the .pk3 files inside of "patch-data-141's" main folder, then copy everything from it over into the game's main folder. I don't think it matters and the iowolf game player will likely use only what it needs and disregard the rest.

kjbless's picture
by kjbless - 2020, May 10 - 11:44am

hey MikeTomTom appreciate you putting me in the right direction, I attempted this several times tonight but I'm a little lost with the "Form the 141 file you only want the included pk3 files (we're Mac users, we don't use dlls) and scripts, ect. Also take the punk buster (located in the included "pb" folder, you could slim it's size by deleting the included dll/so files)."

I'm not the greatest with all this stuff but I was able to follow the steps provided pretty well except for that part. Anyway you could explain these steps in a more detailed manner?

Thank you. My email is kjbless15@yahoo.com if that helps, i'll check this tomorrow for an update.

...because PowerPC applications are no longer supported. Any advice?

Yes, read "3371-Alpha's" September 2017 post (4 posts down below this one) regarding ioRTCW.

I don't know if ioRTCW will still play on the newest Mac OS's but it may be your only chance of getting this game to play on a modern Mac OS. Unless there are newer players being created out there?

I've found a better way to play this on both PPC and intel Macs! Grab the latest ioRTCW here: https://github.com/iortcw/iortcw/releases
Download both the Mac UB and Patch Data 141. Unarchive both zips. Form the 141 file you only want the included pk3 files (we're Mac users, we don't use dlls) and scripts, ect. Also take the punk buster (located in the included "pb" folder, you could slim it's size by deleting the included dll/so files). Now copy these to the Mac UB folder you unzipped earlier. Now download the game from this site, it's in iso format at the moment. Mount the image and copy the contents from the "Main" directory into the "Main" directory of the Mac UB folder, DO NOT OVERWRIGHT ANYTHING! If the Mac UB already has that file, it's likely newer and already patched. Now launch it!
If someone can confirm if this works on intel Macs (or even other PowerMacs) I'll integrate these instructions into the body above.

Edit: I decided to upload Enemy Territory, the standalone multiplayer expansion. I known it's freeware and still readily downloadable even now, but I thought what the heck. They're not going to host it forever. Also it has it's own source port here: https://www.etlegacy.com

Sweeeet! Thank you MikeTomTom!
For some oddball reason I had to go with 1280x768, even though my display claims 1024x768 max. Go figure...

MikeTomTom's picture
by MikeTomTom - 2017, April 23 - 4:44am

@Big Mac: What kind of resolution does it display? As in wide-screen like 16:9 or earlier 4x3 kind?

This game is pretty old and defaults to a 4x3 display ratio. But it is possible to force wide-screen mode. For example; if you want to play RtCW on a 1080p display:

Start a game and write in the console (tap the "~" tilde key to show the console) and use your keyboard Enter key after entering each of the following lines:

r_mode -1
r_customheight 1080
r_customwidth 1920
vid_restart

The above is what works for me, but I haven't tried it on a VGA screen, so YMMV.

Big Mac's picture
by Big Mac - 2017, April 23 - 4:18am

I tried starting with alt but it only gave me the option to change refresh rate, nothing else. I did finally get the game running, and at "proper" resolution, but it runs in a square, with the right quarter of my monitor black. Is this normal?
Note: I've got my PM G5 hooked up to an old flatscreen vga monitor, could that be the problem?

G4 User's picture
by G4 User - 2017, April 21 - 7:46am

Maybe you should start the game by pressing the alt key, so that you may able to change the resolution.

Big Mac's picture
by Big Mac - 2017, April 21 - 5:24am

I got the game installed on my PowerMac G5 2.3DP, but the game runs in a tiny window and I can't get it to fit the screen even by fiddling with the resolution. Also, when I try to play I get an error that the game could not write to some file.
Anybody have any ideas how to make this thing work?

A newer engine build can be found here: http://wolfenstein4ever.de/index.php/downloads/viewcategory/7-rtcw-patches
Fair warning, the new build's a little glitchy in it's current state.
Another (intel only) build can be found here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/rtcw-osx/

"I have this game on PC. Is there a app to launch the PC files on Mac?"

Here's how you can do it, using your PC's RtCW files:
[Updated Aug, 2014]:

  • A super simple method requiring very little effort:
    • Create a new folder on your Mac's hard drive, name it "Wolfenstein".
    • Copy the "Main" folder from your PC's RtCW install (approx. 700+ MB's), over into the new "Wolfenstein" folder on your Mac.
    • DL the Mac RtCW updater; "RtCW_141beta.sit" (16.19 MB), from 2nd DL above
    • Extract the updater and run it, directing it towards the new "Wolfenstein" folder;
      • It'll find the copied-over full version RtCW files in the "Main" folder and installs the necessary RtCW Mac libraries and apps into the "Wolfenstein" folder.
  • Before the 1st run:
    • Inside the copied over "Main" folder, delete the file named "wolfconfig.cfg" and the folder named "save", if it exists (these get recreated fresh).

This will give you an updated full Mac version of RtCW, good to go.

Yeah, I just noticed this, must be a new upload. Good, about time! I effing love this game! And since I can only ever find the Enemy Territory download, this is good for me. Download this now! This is the best Wolfy game made ( the remake on the '360 sucked balls)
