Quest for Glory is an adventure game. One of the best games I've played. You can choose to be either a Fighter, Magic User or a Thief.

See also: Quest for Glory V: Dragon Fire

Compatibility
Architecture: 68k

Also playable in SheepShaver using PowerFPU. A DOS version can be played on Mac OS X using Boxer.

Version 3.0b1

System requirements:

  • 4MB RAM
  • System 7.0 or later
  • 256 colors
  • 10MB free hard disk space
  • From my experiences:
Will work with MacOS 9 *if* you disable all extensions at boot (hit and hold shift during system startup). I have seen it work on an LC and LCIII - it's slightly slow at the 16Mhz LC speed. Runs great at LCIII speed (25Mhz). Works on 512x364 (12" monitors) and 640x480 monitors (13"). May run in a higher resolution - but not tested.

I'm having trouble getting this to run on my G4/466 Digital Audio with 384 MB RAM using OS 9.2.2.

I can download the file, unstuff it, run the install and it seems to work; the installer reports that it installed successfully.

However, the Finder gives me the following message: The application "Quest For Glory Install" has unexpectedly quit, possibly because the the server that connects it has been disconnected".

When I try to run it, the system freezes everything except the mouse. I can force quit it using command-option-esc.

I've tried starting without extensions (holding down the shift key) and I've tried running it a 640x480 with 256 colors but I get the same result.

Any ideas on how to get this to run? Thanks!

I agree. I was very mad when QFG4 was announced for the Mac and never released. I got a DOS compatibility card for my Mac specifically to play it. You can still use your Mac import files in the DOS games. They still work.

You must be looking at the original EGA version, which was never released on the Mac. VGA means 256 colors. EGA is 16 colors. This is a VGA remake of the EGA original. There's also a VGA remake for DOS. The EGA original uses a text parser instead of icons. I like both versions.

This game was a serious delight. My only complaint: How evil of Sierra to make a game that when at the end allows you to save your character for the next installation? Especially when the next installation never was made available to Mac users. Weak...

I thought the DOS version was VGA colors - meaning only 16 colors? The Mac version is 256 colors. I've looked up the DOS version - and from the screenshots, it looks like the mac version might have nicer graphics.

This a great classic game. However, I found it less of a hassle to run the DOS version on Boxer. (1.25Ghz G4 MacMini/10.4.11)

The top Bittorrent sites have tons of abandonware, too.

When I extract the game, I'm left with a folder "Quest For Glory I" containing the files '1.Pat', '4.Pat', '7.PAT' & 'Data1'. How do I use these files?

I'm using SheepShaver, Mac OS 9, PPC.
