"id Software's follow-up to Doom and Doom II, 'Quake' is a first-person shooter."

From the creators of DOOM and DOOM II comes the most intense, technologically advanced 3-D experience ever captured on CD ROM. Features free and fluid motion, ambient sound and lighting, and unmatched multi-player capabilities.
   - notes from CD jacket liner.

[Top DL]: Quake 1 game without original CD music score.
[2nd DL]: Full CD with music, imaged as a bin/cue pair, compressed with OS X zip. Burn the image with Toast on a Mac or Imgburn on Windows to make a CD that contains both the game and audio partitions.
[3rd DL]: Quake 1.09 Update patch — Essential for restoring CD audio play in Macs running OS's 8.1 - 9.2.2
[4th DL]: QuakeWorld and GLQuakeWorld clients
[5th+ DL]: user additions/full game expansions. Malice has a reputation as being the best of the Quake 1 conversions. The OS X version of the Nehahra expansion can be found here.

Its main technological innovation is the use of a true 3D engine - the levels themselves as well as the enemies are polygonal. This not only allows for more natural level designs and character animations, but also for more realistic lighting and the inclusion of simulated physics that have an effect on gameplay: grenades can bounce off walls and around corners, for example.

In single-player mode, gameplay consists mainly of proceeding through the levels (spread over four distinct episodes) in search of an exit, killing everything that moves. Interaction with the game world is reduced to a minimum: since there is no use key, buttons are pressed by running into or shooting at them. As in id's earlier games, many secrets are waiting to be discovered, including a few hidden levels.

Unlike Doom's rather straightforward design that couples futuristic environments with demonic imagery, the theme of Quake's levels, enemies and weapons is not so easily pinpointed. While each episode begins in a futuristic military base (with a technological 'slipgate' as the level exit), later levels take place in environments inspired by medieval fantasy and gothic horror (castles, dungeons and caverns) and the player passes through magical portals to advance. In a departure from Doom's colorful environments, all Quake levels are dominated by earth colors.

The enemies conform to the mishmash of designs: there are human opponents armed with shotguns and energy weapons in the early levels, while the later levels include medieval knights, ghosts, zombies, ogres (armed with grenade launchers and chainsaws) and some more unearthly beasts. The player's weapons, while relatively modern, all have a low-tech feel. Besides a (bloodstained) axe, there are shotguns, nailguns, rocket and grenade launchers and the Thunderbolt, which discharges electrical energy.

Quake was one of the first games playable natively over the Internet in addition to LANs. The single-player levels can be played cooperatively, but the game is most famous for its deathmatch mode. One-on-one duels, team play and free-for-all competition are possible. The emphasis is on fast reaction and skillful maneuvering through the levels. All of the single-player maps can be used as arenas, but the game also comes with six maps especially designed for deathmatch.

Works like charm on G4-Mini! (note: Not all textures are remade, but a lot of them. Perhaps you can add missing ones)

Does anyone have the Mac beta that was leaked before the game was released? I remember it being pretty broken, but it's an interesting historical piece.

Why Do I get a black screen in 3dfx-mode?
I can't fix this. Already updated to 1.09 does not help.

Hey guys! Been a while, got a treat for you. Found the sound tracks for the mission packs. The first one is here: http://www.moddb.com/games/quake/downloads/ultimate-quake-mission-1-patc...
Second is here: http://www.moddb.com/games/quake/downloads/ultimate-quake-mission-2-patc...
Unfortunately they're exe files so you'll need something like the unarchiver to open them. Also I think the second one also has an unofficial patch file for the mission pack, file called "progs.dat". You can read about the issue here: https://www.quaddicted.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=292

UPDATE: the first mission pack can be found here: http://gamesnostalgia.com/en/game/quake-mission-pack-no-i-scourge-of-arm...
To use with Fruitz of Dojo's Quake binaries download the PC version of the pack, Unarchive it, and look for the subfolder called "id1" within the "resources" folder. Once you've found it rename it "hipnotic" & copy it into your Quake game directory. To launch it, drag-n-drop it on your Quake or QLQuake application. Other tips & tricks (such as launching it via Apple Script) can be found inside the readme file Fruitz of Dojo included in his disk image.
Mission pack 2 remains at large.
[Edit] I've uploaded both mission packs plus a bonus unofficial one. I managed to obtain them from here: http://www.emuparadise.me/roms/search.php?query=quake&section=all
I can confirm they work (with OS X at least).

If Anyone's having difficulty downloading Frutz of Dojo's latest GLQuake or a mirror's simply not working, you can download the latest version of his build on wayback here: https://web.archive.org/web/20121006053636/http://www.fruitz-of-dojo.de/...?
Just ignore the pixelated breasts and go straight for the download. And it's universal binary!
Also if someone could be kind enough to upload the mission packs/official addons that would be great. This is such a great game.

I am using the original disc and the music doesn't seem to play at all on OS9. It does play on OS9 with GLQuake, but you need to have the CD in the drive.

The audio tracks in the new image are from the Win version of the game as I do not have a Mac version. The audio should be the same in both platforms.

I managed to slog through the shady world of PC torrents and such and got the Malice total conversion. It's now uploaded to the site itself and to my mirror.

ADD: I haven't tested it thoroughly. On my G3 WallStreet, it actually didn't work with the regular version of Quake, but did seem to be okay with GLQuake. I didn't do anything more than wander through the first level, however. There are Mac-specific instructions included on the disc so I know it is meant to work with Macs...

I agree, GLQuake11b3 on a Classic Mac OS is the way to go. On a PC, I prefer: the Telejano Quake Engine and on Mac OS X, I just have to use: the 'Fruitz Of Dojo' Quake Engine[s] for Quake 1, Quake II & TenebraeQuake - Their TenebraeQuake Engine is for Quake 1 and is more hardware demanding than their original Quake 1 engine (and is my preference on OS X now).

There was also a Quake full conversion called Malice that was published for Mac that would make a nice addition to this page, if anyone's got it in their closet...

I use FuhQuake on PC, and it looks stunning, but I don't think there are any graphically improved engines (apart from OpenGL) available on classic MacOS. http://transact.dl.sourceforge.net/project/macglquake/GLQuake/1.1b3%20%2...

Just one precision : I ran this game on my old 7200/90Mhz under Mac OS 7.6

The game in itslef is insane, fast paced and graphically, it's ground breaking.

This is an excellent game, however, the music appears to be disabled, likely because this was included on one of those mixed-mode CDs that was recognized as both the game CD and an audio CD. If that is the case, is there any chance that the audio portion could be uploaded? Thanks.
