Guides on emulating older games

Postal 2 the CD, updater, "Apocalypse Weekend" expansion pack, "Eternal Damnation" expansion pack, and "Fudge Pack". dL #8 is the short Demo.

Postal 2 was first released for PC in 2003. The earliest Mac release was in 2004, and the "Share the Pain" designation is an enhancement over the original release by having added multi-player capability, poetically said to be what the name 'Share' references. The Fudge Pack, released in 2006 on DVD, is a best-of compilation containing Postal 1 for OS X, Postal 2 with Apocalypse Weekend expansion, plus two user-made expansion packs "A Week in Paradise" and "Eternal Damnation", and more. Two primary ways to install Postal 2 are : the 2006 Universal Binary "Fudge Pack" which was heavily modified just prior to its release (read perhaps unstable), vs the original gold CD and all its updates see 'Compatibility' below.

Description of AW here:

Welcome to Paradise.

You are The Postal Dude, just your average Joe trying to survive in the harsh environment that is modern day society. Waking up in the Hospital after your brush with self-Inflicted death at the end of the last game, you find everything isn't exactly the way you left it. Your mobile home has been repossessed, your dog is in the City Pound, and your Hateful Wife has left you. At least the news isn't ALL bad…
Trying to rescue your home and dog would be challenging enough in this twisted reflection of the worst America has to offer. Unfortunately for you, the recurring effects of your head injury, some unethical cat experimentation and an outbreak of some unimaginably bizarre strain of MadCow disease will put an additional spin on it all.

This is a game of life. How will you play it?

garden Hints:
The demo version (PPC-only) will download and install fastest and it uses fewer resources, better for newbies to test their reaction to this "Mature Content". CONTENT WARNING.

"Apocalypse Weekend" is the official sequel expansion pack made by the same authors as Postal 2. "AW" is required for certain other expansion packs to operate.

"Eternal Damnation" is an intense fan-favorite expansion pack. Heavy metal occult. "ED" weighs in at over 2.3 GIgaBytes additional uncompressed data (storage requirement).

"A Week in Paradise" is a one-player-only fanmade enhancement addon (mod) which requires Apocalypse Weekend preinstalled. "AWP" also known as "AW7" integrates heavily into the P2 & AW engines, and such changes remain even if the Fudge Pack is directed to skip installing AWP. The Fudge Pack version of Postal 2 is different than the 1409.2 gold updater, even tho both report the same version. AWP main features are: cheat abilities unlocked by default, P2 & AW tied together in one story, AW content enabled within P2, and lots of new clothing options for the bystander population.

1st dL is the Postal 2 Share the Pain Gold CD year 2004 PowerPC-only installer.

2nd dL is the updater to version 1409.2 (highest) Univeral Binary update.

3rd dL is the original Apocalypse Weekend expansion pack applicable to Mac (PowerPC-only), Windows, and Linux. It has a P2 app v1409.1 updater built in and thankfully this will not overwrite v1409.2

4th dL is the 2006 Fudge Pack compilation DVD Universal Binary installer for Postal 2, AW, AWP, ED, and bonus material including an OS X-friendly old "Postal 1" game update.

5th dL is for updating the 3rd download to become Universal Binary. This was extracted from the fudge pack DVD.

6th dL is the "Eternal Damnation" once seen it cannot be unseen. This too is Universal Binary extracted from the fudge pack DVD, a large chunk of that DVD, it can be added on to older versions of Postal 2.

7th dL is zipped plain text file of numerous cheat codes applicable to all Postal 2 games including the demo.

8th dL is the 2004 Postal 2 Demo for PowerPC-only.

A modern re-release for Intel Macs is available on Steam, known as Postal 2 Complete. Its main features are proper widescreen support and integration of the popular mod, A Week in Paradise. Buy Link (different publisher):

Mount these image files using "Toast" then there's no need to burn discs.
Long story short, a nice alternative to the Fudge Pack is to install the gold CD Postal 2 (PowerPC), update it to 1409.2 (Universal), run the Apocalypse Weekend expansion pack over that (PowerPC), then update Apocalypse Weekend to Universal, finally add the Eternal Damnation expansion pack (Universal). This method is 1 GB less of a download compared to the Fudge Pack and 1.25 GB shorter after installation. This method eliminates the DVD's A Week in Paradise mod and engine support for it, crashing was eliminated on at least one system.

"A Week in Paradise" - didn't like it. It made a mess of things. "Eternal Damnation" otoh, sick. Siiick.

Testing "Apocalypse Weekend" working, very good game, MadMac's 2nd upload fixed it, and the download #3 has been updated. I hadn't noticed that was ready almost three years ago.

Different game than P2, the AW opening states " was just a horrible dream" as if all the events in P2 don't have to have been real, then it launches into an amazing zombie-apocalypse scenario.

Fudge Pack was uploaded, and the cheats file here dL #6 was updated to reflect those contents.

Needed, the missing major expansion pack called "Corkscrew Rules" and it has two varieties: English and Russian editions. Some of the expansion packs maybe had their own updaters too, needing to be unearthed and brought here.

I feel the rendering in Postal 2 is significantly choppy, needing tweaking of the graphics options, like setting "fog distance" to a particular yardage makes a welcome difference. I must say, P2 and inherently all its expansion packs, play like PC versions being run in an emulation layer. Perhaps that's not literal, but the impression I get.

This is the most non "Politically Correct" game ever. You can attach cats to the barrel of your gun, cats. I first saw P2 as a demo version about 350MB on a Macworld magazine cover DVD around 2004. Game's title screen has a swarm of objects floating around where each object is something that could 'trigger' you into 'going postal'. Among those... a car's alternator, a book Catcher in the Rye. I upload the demo version, a better way for people to test the waters here.

This really is MUST HAVE for PPCs. Runs so well. The newer addon campaigns are hard to install (very hard), but the base game experience is just timeless. Like Beavis and Butthead, or Duke Nukem 3D, it's just FUN.

Was the original game released as some kind of Mac/PC release on disc? I can't find any pictures of the original box that state Mac compatibility.

Thx for release – the game works perfectly and no problems were identified.

- Installed without problems with the help of mounting in Toast 10.
- Starts up and runs on iMac 5G

- Download First DL and setup Postal 2 with Toast
- Download Second DL and setup Patch with Toast
- Download Third DL and and copy the image from the image with the installer under the OSX somewhere:
- Mount using the Toast copied installer
- Run the installation and follow the instructions of the installer
- When the installer requires a disk with AW - emulate the disk downloaded from the third DL into the drive on the main drive and click "OK".
- Profit... U can play Postal 2 & Postal 2 AW

I forget, does this game use a custom installer or PKG? If custom you could try that trick I found that appeared to work for that linux user; launch the installer from the termanal but before doing so, add variable export CD_ROOT= with path to the image.

gr8. maybe it's a little copy prot. like bad sector style i haven't seen that in a while, that stuff was popular on floppy disks. I shall try realdisc method: OSX Disk Utility isn't allowing the Apocalypse Weekend .dmg to burn to CD because it first runs checksum on the image-file and fails there.

MadMac's picture

Skycapt, i get a similar I/O error while installing the postal-gold.dmg posted here... that’s why he says it has to be burned to a disc first. So i burned my cd, then the install goes without any problem.
Then i find out that the AWP, for proper install, needs to be burned to a disc too... oops, my bad.

The AWP also installs previous the patch (1409_1) if not installed. And then u can apply the 1409_2 from here.
To make a sure shot about it, i’m gonna re-upload the AWP dmg, locked and .sit compressed, ok?

MadMac's picture
by MadMac - 2018, January 12 - 3:21am

That’s weird... think i’m gonna check all the files here. I’ll see what i can do.

SkyCapt's picture
by SkyCapt - 2018, January 12 - 1:23am

Ok, I can force-mount the Apoc .dmg using Toast v5.2 in Tiger, BUT it is CORRUPTED and doesn't completely install. Installer complains "Read failure on /Volumes/Postal2AW_ [...] Sounds/AWDialog.uax" and file AWDialog.uax shows an "Input/Output error" when I try reading it using Terminal.

I really do want it, I'm just concerned that it may be still for sale (in other words we'll be committing piracy) is all. You could zip and just upload the pack's components to save size and time, after all it's 2 separate games technically. I'm interested to see if they made any stability improvements to Postal 1.

MadMac's picture

It’s ok, alpha, the dvd is a huuuge .iso image... it will take all day to get it here. I think i can publish a dropbox link to it, if anyone is interested.

MadMac's picture
by MadMac - 2018, January 11 - 4:27am

Hey SkyCapt, I’ve checked the dmg... the size is correct, but I get an error reffering Excess in Data Compressor when using DiskImageMounter.

Mount it using ToastTitanium, it works.

Thanks for the info MadMac, almost forgot that The Fudge Pack contains the 3 most popular mods. I also forgot that it was a three-way hybrid with Mac, PC and Linux versions all together. It'd be cool if you could upload it, but like I said we have to first see if it's still sold. I keep thinking that the GOG version is the version included in The Fudge Pack, minus the mods. Steam version is some intel only enhanced crap though.

I tried the AW dL to no luck. OSX 10.4.11 - It won't mount and fails verify checksum, I got a .dmg 392,063,717 bytes. And downloaded it a second time for the same thing, not working.

And the "Mirror" download buttons stopped working after the physical main server went on its pilgrimage, just the "Main" download buttons are working. Mirror dL'ing works on old files, but not on files uploaded since The Move.

I think i got that “Eternal Damnation” extension as a standalone dmg somewhere... is way more sick than the AW... and my 6.34 Gb - Fudge Pack Dvd comes with this README:

Welcome back to the well.

Here are Mac OS X versions of everything Running With Scissors
has made to date. Everything here is Universal (that is, it
is optimized for both PowerPC and Intel Macs).

The basic list is Postal 1 ("Classic and Uncut",
editor or multiplayer included. We suck, sorry), Postal 2
Share the Pain (no editor here, either, but hey! Multiplayer!
That's the "sharing" part.), the Apocalypse Weekend expansion
pack, some of the best Postal 2 mods, and some other crapola:
jpegs of your favorite Postal Babes and a radio interview
with Mike Jaret of RwS fame.

Seems legit...Wink

If I'm not mistaken, The Fudge Pack may have a more up to date version of the game, UB support and all. The problem is I've heard from some that this is the version on GOG, which would mean we can't distribute it due to it not being abandoned. Can someone check this version to see if it's the UB Fudge Pack or some other intel only re-release? Note that you may have to buy it to check because GOG's infamous for having the wrong system requirements (in fairness Steam isn't much better in that category either).

Also we REALLY need to get Mac versions of Eternal Damnation and Corkscrew Rules! They're rated two of the best mods. If you can't find a Mac version anyone with experience think they can convert the PC versions; they're both freeware?

IIGS User said "I see it's not zipped." no, that's what she said. XYZ. heh, I'm sure I'll have to explain, it's an in-game joke, player can walk around 'flashing' people with their 'zipper' down.

Interesting, on the original CD : mirrors hanging on walls are just blank glass. But with the 1409_2 update mirrors begin to offer reflections of characters including yourself. Many cheat codes available for this. Invincibility, jump to any level, walk thru walls, fly 'like a birdie'. Cheers for the Apocalypse add-on !

It's great using a mouse with scrollwheel, which didn't come with Macs this age. 4-1: when looking thru the telescopic rifle sight, a scrollwheel controls Zoom in/out. Might not be mentioned in instructions and no other way to do this, so without a scrollwheel you' ve no clue what you're missing.

ok, Apocalypse Weekend Extension uploaded... too easy!

3371-Alpha's picture
by 3371-Alpha - 2018, January 7 - 2:03am

Considering that the latest version is intel only, anyone think they can upload Apocalypse Weekend (version 1411, I think)? Also I found a possible no cd here, it references Linux so I don't know if it will work. Also in this old Mac thread, a user managed to port Eternal Damnation and Corkscrew Rules! (he calls it "Muhosransk mod" which is the city in Corkscrew Rules!) mods. Links are broken unfortunately.

Great upload - you don't have to burn it to a disk if you mount the DMG with Toast, by the way.

I see it's not zipped.

You could save bandwith time & costs by zipping it before uploading it.

Why not use the full name of the game (Postal 2: Share the Pain) for the page? Also the game is not available from the publisher and the link to that was provided was to the PC version only. The only Amazon link to a Mac version that I could find was to a version published by Aspyr which is not the version here, so I have placed that in the description instead of the misnamed Publisher buy link.
