"Get ready to Soil Your Plants! There's a zombie on your lawn! And your only defense is an arsenal of home-guardin' plants. Zap zombies in 50 Adventure levels, 20 Mini-Games, and Puzzle and Survival modes. Dig into the Zen Garden and lively bonus content -- earn 20 achievements, and make your own zombie with the Zombatar(tm). The fun never dies!"

The Game of the Year Edition of the popular tower defense game. (Funny) Zombies invade your home, and the only thing that can stop them from eating your brain is your arsenal of plants.

1st download: German language retail disc v1.0.3 (2010)

2nd download: the Mac-only partition of an English retail disc v1.0.25 (2010), works on PPC & Intel.

3rd download: filetransfer v1.0.40 (2011) English, won't startup on PPC - maybe not registered.
Version history claims there are bug-fixes.

"Michael Jackson's Thriller character was going to be a zombie in this game, but when MJ died in 2009 the game was changed around respect, to a less distinguishable 'Disco Stu'-like character. These downloads (Game of the Year Edition) are from 2010 whereas the initial v1.0.0 was released in 2009 and there might exist copies that played with Jackson's likeness. Inside this v1.0.25 the Thriller zombie graphics and animations still exist, in the game's resource files, but they won't get played and the 'dance' code does not summon them, the code word isn't about Jackson." --skycapt

Compatibility
Architecture: PPC x86 (Intel:Mac)

declared: Intel Core Duo 1.66 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 64 MB graphics cards, OSX 10.4.11 - 10.7.x

The English version runs in PowerPC plus as low as Tiger 10.4.8 -- when you allow it to idle with a beachball or blank screen for 30 to 60 seconds. It has been found the game plays too fast on PPC such as G4 era, measures must be taken to make some PPC systems slower.

Does not run on any of the later OS X versions.

The first disc is not mountable - say "not recognized". What is it?

I really love this release, I thought there was no PPC version at all. Have been looking for this for ages to run on my PowerBook G4 12inch since it has the perfect aspect ratio. However, runs extremely fast and unplayable because of that. Why is that?

Found this graphic (not a photo) of the GOTY badge sticker which after seeing it I'm certain it (only the silver starcircle, without the blue rectangle) was on the outside of my v1.0.25 packaging. And a little research shown once upon a time 1.0.25 could be purchased from apple online under the GOTY title.

Hey, there's a good full length song "Zombies On Your Lawn", sung by some sunflowers and with zombie call and answer backup vocals. Normally you only get to hear it after completing this huge game, but you can go in the resource files of v1.0.25 and find it in ogg format. The v1.0.40 holds compressed resources so you won't find the song nor MJ's Thriller there.

English v1.0.25 has most or all of the GOTY content, such as: the Zombatar, more/better music, Disco Zombies replacing the Thriller Zombies, and I think I read the "level meter" (seen in lower-right of 1st screenshot) is "improved". It lacks the words GOTY anywhere in game, in docs, and on packaging because it was produced mere weeks ahead of the official GOTY disc release said to be aug 10 2010 -- v1.0.25 is dated July 2010. If by chance there was a GOTY sticker on the outside of its cellophane wrapper, I have no way of remembering. But since I felt compelled to write that last sentence, it's possible. And it may be the version number means 1.0.2-and-a-half.

Is the English copy really the Game of the Year version? I believe that the GOTY version had some additional features not present in the standard version.

I been playing this (on PPC!), in spite of the real zombie apocalypse going down now right outside my doors. I slowed this down more by also running a Stand Alone Flash Player 10.1 in a looping 'movie' file or two. I found ways to cheat big, but first here's a bunch of non-cheat codes to alter graphics and sound. These can be typed at the main menu or during gameplay.

future ===== toggle sunglasses on zombies.
mustache === toggle mustaches on zombies.
moustache == same as "mustache" it seems.
sukhbir ==== toggle enhanced "Brainz!" sounds.
trickedout = toggle sup'ed-up lawnmowers.

Plain lawnmowers are not less lethal than tricked out ones.
There are three more codes which require you to perform an in-game achievement before they will unlock. You have to "grow the Tree of Wisdom" to a particular height. The codes are "daisies" (needs Tree 100ft.), "dance" (needs Tree 500ft.), and "pinata" (needs Tree 1000ft.). Hopefully they slow down zombies and that's why they come locked.

Seems there are no other cheat codes, so I found ways to hexedit the saved game, but I'm gonna finish playing first before telling.

Yes, plays too fast on PPC: my 1.6GHz onezy G4, I thought it might be an in-game joke at first... unwinnable tutorial. Needs trickery to slow it down. I can physically slow down my G4 with the push of a button, played with 950 MHz CPU on 100 MHz FSB and it's reasonable, maybe still a little too fast. Ridiculous for them to say this needs 1.7 GHz x86 when 450 MHz G3/G4 should be good. x86 must be an inefficient architecture...

Great addition - thanks SkyCapt! You're right both times - it contains a Windoze version as well and it does not object being run on a PPC. That said, it's not working either for me. All I get is a black screen for the described 20-30 seconds and a crash to desktop. (I'm on a 2003 MDD with a Sonnet Dual 1.67 Ghz CPU running 10.4.11). The German Plants vs Zombies is version 1.0.3 - the English one calls itself v. 1.0.25

EDIT: I can run the English version, so must have been made some changes made between the two versions. The English one runs at an insane speed on my machine. Like a candidate for G3 Throttle Laughing out loud

Womp, here it is. Maybe swap dL 1/2 ?
The German dL is hybrid Mac-Windoz and huge too, why are Win partitions 10X the necessary size? Can you force the German game to run on PPC?

This game has many cheat codes.

If someone has either the English version or an update, please upload it! I'd also like to hear reports from people that actually got this one successfully running. Wouldn't work on Sierra, wouldn't work on Yosemite. It seems that it broke with either Mountain Lion or Mavericks.
