Emulation
Guides on emulating older games

In 1957, evil Brain Aliens from Planet X sent a fleet of flying saucers to Earth to abduct humans to other worlds as slaves to the Giant Brain. Luckily, robot police named Otto Matics patrol the galaxy and you control one whose mission is to rescue humans from different alien planets and defeat the Brain Aliens and other alien followers.

You start on Earth and try to prevent abductions and also collecting rocket fuel while defeating the aliens. Use 7 different types of weapons through 10 levels while battling 25 types of aliens like giant radioactive killer vegetables, metal beasts, and alien clowns in hovercraft bumper-cars. You can ride in a bubble across noxious lakes of slimy goo, or ride a zip line in certain areas. At one point, you can also control a flying saucer to attack alien fortress. There's also a radioactive potion you can drink to grow to 50 feet in size.

First download v2.0.1 made December 2004. This looks like the bundled/complimentary edition which had no copy protection and didn't need registering, no further downloads needed. v2 introduced a new app icon and the novel capability to play while wearing Red-Cyan "3D Glasses", in conjunction with Pangea's then new-release Nanosaur2 doing the same. At least one difference between v2.0.1 and the previous v2.0.0 (March 2004) is located in the Data/Audio "Main sounds" file (data is in resource fork), that received changes. Pangea had also by then dropped Aspyr as the publisher and were publishing Otto Matic themselves.

Second download is v1.0 made December 2001. It was ripped personally (by SkyCapt) from a snowball iMac's harddrive in 2004, so it's also a bundled edition not needing registration. It lacks ability to set the screen resolution as far as I can tell.

Third download is v2.0.0, although, its app file's modification date-timestamp was upset in 2014, presumably either by accident or online registration activity (a "pristine" upload of v2.0.0 is welcome). This is presented as an update in which you download v1.0 first and then apply this.

Fourth download is the Demo v2.0.1 because this can run on Mac OS 8.6 you may wish to test using this Demo first on older hardware.

Documentation link has a more modern pdf of the 3d theatre-glasses notice.

Compatibility
Architecture: PPC (Carbonized)

Version 2.0 - When launched for the 1st time it informs you of an update (phones home), currently 3.1.0. If you run this on a Classic Mac OS, do not update.

If I copy the v3.1 Images/NORTL file into v2.0.0 and v2.0.1 then those versions will also ask for serial registration. It appears this is the easy way in which shareware versions were distinguished from bundled v2 thru the final v3.1

There a pristine copy of Otto Matic version 1.2.2, unencumbered, no activation or phone-home (Aspyr OEM) bundled on the Mac OS X 10.2.4 eMac install disk, should anyone want it. It plays well in 9.2.2 and 10.1 and later (also has Deimos Rising on board).

Yep, that's the ticket to v3.1 - thx.

looks like v3.1 is still available on the app Store - if that's the unmodified 2008 version then it should be possible to bypass the serial check by navigating to the Otto Matic.app/Contents/MacOS/Data/Images/ directory and deleting the file named "NORTL".
Note that you probably need to use LittleSnitch as well for game to run.

The purchase link here leads to a UB dmg 3.1 (last updated 2008) but it needs a serial to launch, and is it really still for sale?

v2.0.0 has the identical Data folder that v1.0.0 does (v2.0.1 doesn't). So dL 3 can be turned into an "update" package less than 1MB with only the 2014-modified App plus the PDF for 3d goggles.

I also have the Demo version 2.0.1 23.5 MB compressed sit - but anyone might as well dl & install the full version nowadays.

@SkyCapt I don't think I have an "unmodified" v2.0.0 but I do have one of version 3.1 which is a Universal Binary if you're interested.

@SkyCapt
Yeah, I added back v2.0.0 at least until a "pure" or "pristine" copy of that specific version is found, for the sake of preservation. I'm not sure how long the Garden keeps deleted downloads stored in the servers, so I put it back up before any potential server cleanup ever takes place. I think when in doubt, we should default to preserving unique binaries whenever possible.

@thedoctor45 wow u uploaded this in year 2014. Version 2.0.0 however the game file displays a bad modification date of 2014, it doesn't appear to intentionally alter itself (but I have no internet, maybe the "phone home" altered yours?).

I have an unmodified v2.0.1 and v1.0.0 - I'd like to remove the modified 2.0.0 make 2.0 1 be the new dL #1 and add v1.0.0 sound ok? Do you still have unmodified v2.0.0? I have your 2.0.0 archive and believe macgarden saves certain deleted files too, if anyone thinks the v2.0.0 with a change date should be re-uploaded as dL 3 perhaps.

I still have the original MacOS 9 binary + the PPC app bundle that came with my iMac G4 in 2002.

I doubt that the universal binary sold by Pangea still runs on OS 9 machines... I'd consider the original OS9/PPC release to be abandonware.

Abandonware? It seems to be still for sale at Pangea. Though OS X .dmg downloads only - PPC?
