2. Installation

PC:

To Install:
* Start at the Windows 95/98/ME/XP desktop.
* Insert the Myst III: Exile DVD-ROM disk into your DVD-ROM drive. The Myst III: Exile
startup window will appear.
* Select the Install option and follow the on-screen instructions to install the program.

If the startup window does not appear automatically on the screen, you can install the
program manually:
* Select the Start button on the taskbar and choose RUN.
* Type D:\SETUP.EXE in the line labeled OPEN. (If your DVD-ROM drive uses a letter other
than D, substitute that letter for D.)
* Select the OK button and follow the on-screen instructions to install Myst III: Exile.

To Play:
* After successfully installing the program, select the PLAY option on the Myst III: Exile
startup screen. Or go to the Start Menu, select Programs, select Myst III Exile, and
select the Myst III Exile option.

To Remove:
* Go to the Start Menu, select Programs, select Myst III Exile, and select Uninstall.

Mac:

To Install:
* Insert the Myst III: Exile DVD-ROM disk into your DVD-ROM drive.
* Crete a folder called "Myst III" on your hard drive. Note, the name of the folder does
not actually matter, however, the game cannot be directly installed on your desktop.
* Copy the "M3Data" folder (253 MB) into your "Myst III" folder.
* Optionally, if you have enough room on your hard drive and wish to do a 'full' install,
you can also copy the "Data" folder (2.02 GB) into your "Myst III" folder. Though not
required, doing this will produce shorter loading times in the game.
* Next, open the folder on the DVD that corresponds to the language you wish the game
to run in. (ex. "Myst III English") Copy the following files from this folder directly into
your "Myst III" folder, not into ay other folder, nor should you create a folder.
* Manual.pdf
* Language.m3u
* Readme Mac
* If you are running Mac OS 8.x or 9.x, "Myst III Exile for Mac OS 8-9"
* If you are running Mac OS 10.x, "Myst III Exile for Mac OS X"
* Optionally, the "makingof.mov" movie can also be copied over for better playback
* QuickTime 6 is required to play Myst III: Exile as well as run the Making Of movie.
Installers have been provided on the DVD for the latest QuickTime versions for your OS.
* Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view the Manual.pdf file. Installers have been provided
on the DVD for the latest Adobe Acrobat Rader versions for your OS.

To Play:
* Double-click the application "Myst III: Exile for Mac OS" on your hard drive. Note, it cannot
be launched directly from the DVD.
* Optionally, you can launch the "Ubi Soft Registration" application from the DVD in order to
register your product.

To Uninstall:
* Drag the "Myst III" folder from your hard drive to the trash and empty the trash.

3. Tips For Enhancing Performance

-- Windows --

* If you have a compatible 3D graphics card, run the game in Hardware Mode to improve
performance.

* Ensure that you have the most recent drivers for your graphics and sound cards. Contact
the manufacturers to get the latest updates.

-- Macintosh --

* If you have a compatible 3D graphics card, run the game in Hardware Mode to improve
performance.

* Macintosh users running the game in Hardware Mode should be sure to visit Apple's
website at www.apple.com/opengl to download the latest OpenGL drivers for their system.

* Turning off virtual memory can sometimes prevent sound skipping. However, if you have only
the minimum amount of RAM (64 MB), you may find performance is superior with virtual
memory enabled.

* If using a portable computer, in the "Energy Saver" Control Panel (Advanced Settings),
turn off (uncheck) "Allow Processor Cycling" and "Reduce Processor Speed."

* Turn File Sharing Off in the "File Sharing" Control Panel.

4. Troubleshooting

-- Windows --

If you do not see your error message listed in this document, please do not disregard the
need to update your drivers. Updated drivers are essential to run the program effectively. Do not
assume that your new computer has the latest drivers. We suggest contacting the
manufacturers of the DVD-ROM, sound, and video cards to ensure that you have the most
current driver versions.

* Voodoo 2 and Voodoo 3 cards do not support 32-bit color in their hardware acceleration
modes. Since Myst III: Exile requires 32-bit color, if you are using a Voodoo 2 or
Voodoo 3 card, you will need to run the game in Software mode.

* Neomagic, SiS, and Intel chipset video cards, as well as some others, can only run Myst
III: Exile in Software rendering mode due to limitations of these cards. The game will
prompt you if this is the case. Hold down CTRL while starting the game, then select the
Software rendering mode. See the list of compatible hardware below for more details.

* Savage 3d video card may experience crashes running in hardware mode. A work around for
this is to run the game in software to move past the problem area, save the game, and
then load the saved game after restarting in hardware mode.

* Make sure that the DVD-ROM is in your DVD-ROM drive when you launch the program.

* We do not recommend that you Alt+TAB out of the game. Alt+TABing out of the game can
cause serious instability of the game program and graphics.

* If your sound card supports DirectSound acceleration and your game sound is choppy or
garbled, try disabling DirectSound acceleration through your sound card's control
tools. This will likely fix your problem.

-- Macintosh --

* Make sure that the DVD-ROM is in your DVD-ROM drive when you launch the program.

* If you have only the minimum amount of RAM required to play the game in your machine
(64 MB), make sure virtual memory is enabled. Increase the amount of virtual memory until
the game runs smoothly.

* While playing the game on a Macintosh PowerBook or iBook you may experience problems
if your computer goes to 'Sleep' during your game. We suggest that you Save your game
and exit to the Finder prior to putting your computer to 'Sleep.'

* Some screensavers may interfere with Myst III: Exile. To be safe, disable all screensavers
before playing the game.

5. FAQ

Q. Can I run the game on Windows NT or 2000?
A. While it is possible to run Myst III: Exile on Windows NT or 2000, we cannot guarantee
that Myst III will work on all 2000 or NT systems that otherwise meet the minimum
requirements. Problems may result from running Myst III on these systems, and Ubi Soft
will not be able to offer you technical support if you are using Windows NT or 2000.

Q. What is the difference between Software and Hardware Modes?
A. Software Mode is the normal way to play Myst III: Exile. Hardware Mode is a special,
graphically enhanced version of Myst III: Exile that users with special 3D acceleration
cards can use. In Hardware Mode, the graphics will appear smoother and the game will
be less likely to slow down in areas with numerous visual effects. However, there are no
game features that are exclusive to Hardware Mode, so players using Software Mode will
not be missing anything.

Q. I am using Software Mode, and the game is very choppy and hard to use. What can I do?
A. Open the Options menu, select Game options, and uncheck "Visual Effects". This will
turn off the special water and lava ripples that may be slowing down your computer.

Q. How can I switch between hardware mode and software mode once I have chosen which to use?
A. On a Macintosh, hold down the "option" key when launching the game to bring up the
rendering option dialog box. On a PC, hold down the "CTRL" key when launching the game
to bring up the configuration dialog box.

Q. How do I invert the mouse?
A. When this is enabled, moving the mouse up will look down, and moving the mouse down will
look up. To enable this feature press CMD-I on a Macintosh and CTRL-I on a PC to toggle
mouse inversion.

Q. How do I change the language of the Main Menu?
A. Delete the M3.exe or Application file from the Bin folder along with the language.m3u file
where language is the language you chose in the previous installation. When you reinstall
Myst III, select the language you wish the Main Menu to be in. On a Mac, replace the file
"language.m3u" on your hard drive in the "Text" folder found in the "M3Data" folder with
the "language.m3u" on the DVD out of the language folder of the language you want.

Q. When I select the "Full Install" option, the installation process isn't completing.
A. There are a couple of reasons why a Full Install might not finish. One could be that there
isn't enough disk space to complete the process. Another could be a bad DVD disk. Lastly,
in compatibility tests, we had trouble installing the full version on a Toshiba DVD-ROM
SD-M1102. The "Typical Install" should be used if you have that DVD drive.

Q. QuickTime always crashes when attempting to start the Making Of movie.
A. In compatibility tests, only Windows 95 exhibited this error when attempting to play the
Making Of movie. The game does run correctly and since QuickTime v5.0.2 is required to
view the Making of Myst III: Exile movie, it is suggested to grab some popcorn and visit
a friendly computer with a different OS.

Q. I uninstalled the game, which was previously fully installed, and I don't have more space
available on my hard disk.
A. When prompted to keep or not Read-only files, you answered "No" which means that all
Read-only files where not removed from your hard disk. You will need to delete these files
manually.

Q. After uninstalling and keeping the Read-only files I was prompted to keep or delete, I
decided to delete these files but Win95 is telling that I cannot delete the "arir67w.ttf"
file. What should I do?
A. You should try rebooting your PC and delete the file. If, even after rebooting, Win95 will
not let you delete the file, rename the folder in which "arir67w.ttf" is located, reboot
and delete it.

Another option to install this game with Mac OS X is on this page. The 8th DL here is an installer for old versions of Mac OS X. There is also another version for more recent versions there. Smile

I test this game in Mac OS X 10.4.11 and game will play and opening movie will play. You have to inserted the DVD to play. And copy Myst III Exile DVD folder and copy M3Data and Data folder.

I found a solution to get this game to play in mac os x 10.5.8 and also mac os x 10.4.11. The solution is you need copy the Myst III Exile DVD folder and copy the M3Data folder in Myst III Exile DVD folder and make a folder called Exile DVD and put in this folder Data folder in Exile DVD. The Game will play without DVD inserted in mac os x 10.5.8 and mac os x 10.4.11. The solution in screenshot.

I test on Power Mac G4 1.25 Ghz mirror door 2003 in Mac OS X 10.4.11 and Mac OS X 10.5.8 and Mac OS 9.2.2.
