Emulation
Guides on emulating older games

A classic platformer game, like Dark Castle and much like "Montezuma's Revenge" was for the Atari 800 / Commodore 64 / & Apple ][ computers. Now guide your midnight adventurer named Jack Malone in search of treasure, throughout 8 big mansions. There is a rather large and detailed Tutorial level plus it gives unregistered players access to limited portions of the first 2 mansions (free playable demo). In the swing of things, you can download new mansions and use the supplied level-builder app to create your own. The title music is a masterpiece.

Midnight Mansion began with v1.0.0 in 2005 for OS 9 and OS X 10.1 & up. The highest official version for OS 9 was v1.0.3 in 2005, and the highest version ever was v1.2.0b in 2010 still PowerPC native. Then an enhanced rerelease named "Midnight Mansion HD" (high definition graphics) came in 2011 at its own v1.0.1 for OS X 10.4 Tiger & Universal PPC+Intel. This page is not about those HD versions. Anyway, here, the author recommends using Rosetta for the original Midnight Mansion when on an Intel Mac 10.4-10.6

I discourage playing Midnight Mansion using OS 9 and the oldest MM versions! OS 9 can be force played in all versions (see below) but OS 9 has big problems that weren't ever fixed prior to ending official OS 9 support, and, MM version history reads of a dense stream of bug fixes such that you ought to be using the highest version you can use, in OS X. Offered for download here is version 1.0.9 (July 2007) because we know how to unlock it whereas the keycode being used no longer works in the next available version which happens to leap up to 1.1.8 ~ I haven't found the files for anything between 1.0.9 and 1.1.8 yet.

To register (tested working in v1.0.3 thru 1.0.9 and not working in v1.1.8 & higher) you may need to erase a hidden file in your Mac OS user Preferences folder. If you haven't tried and failed to register, then you won't need to go there, but if the hidden file named "MM Data" exists in Preferences then you must erase it. You can erase the file "Midnight Mansion Prefs" to avoid certain troubles also. Next, set the system time+date to May 1 2006. Launch Midnight Mansion v1.0.9 and input this:

Name> Richard P. May
Code> KSKSDWVWYGUMFPNCJ

The time+date can then be restored to current.

For people interested how to play in OS 9, see here. OS9 play requires CarbonLib v1.6 or higher and you must always be working around some bugs. To start with, most higher versions of MM declare in OS9 File Info themselves to be always v1.0.4 by mistake. I used OSX hdiutil to directly convert the original MM v1.x.x dmg file to an OS9-friendly .img file and then compressed the img in StuffIt v5.5 format. Various text files and web links found in the image need converting or creator+type codes just to open them.

There are three bugs I found when running any version of Midnight Mansion in OS9 :

1. Millions of colors must be used. Under thousands of colors in OS9, when combined with certain other conditions, the status bar at the top of the game screen eventually won't be drawn or updated.

2. Use OS9 File Info to increase the amount of Memory dedicated to running the game, maybe at 60000 KB. The default amount of memory works at first, but crashes (with a competent message) later in the game.

3. Gameplay will slow down, and pulsate annoyingly between slow and extra-slow, if when in OS9 it is run in a window or has been Disturbed by a window. Even when played in full screen mode, loading and saving games have a dialog box which causes this error. And pressing cmd+tab and even when having the OS popup with an "indexing..." message at 12:00 am all cause this error. One solution to regain full speed is to "Suspend" the game you are playing, Quit, relaunch, then (Open) "Resume" the game you suspended.

scott your file 103 was missing icons and missing creator codes. I replaced it with the oem published sit file.

Anyway I was hoping to omit v1.0.3 ~ i know it had been on the publisher's site said to be recommended for OS9 users, BUT every version all the way up to 1.2.0b final seems to handle OS9 the same way, 1.0.3 has a lot of documented bugs in the vers history text, and the undocumented OS9 bugs I encountered exist in 1.0.3 despite its once favorable status. My bug finds could be unique to the peculiarities of my hardware, but my take on this is that OS9 support was "abandoned" by the programmer(s), OS9 wasn't hardly left in a "finalized" state with 103.

Actually they're all full versions just needing registration. I have 1.1.8 1.1.9 & 1.2.0b and I can put one or more back up here. I was feeling down about having converted it to img and OS9 not working out as good as had hoped. Should I put up the last one and in its original dmg form?

I'm putting up 1.1.9 & 1.2.0b - both dmg...

@SkyCapt. The previous version was 1.1.9, albeit a demo. Why did you remove it? It would be good to still have it here until we get a full version of 1.1.9

*** WARNING - Actionsoft appears to be defunct. I bought the game and never received any reply and have had to file a claim with Paypal to get my money back.

Does anyone know where I can download the full game of this?

The Actionsoft website is gone and I can't find any way to buy the game.
I've emailed the creator but I've not had a reply.

In OS9 if I come to an auto Save pedistal, and don't want to Save, I can avoid receiving the slowdown error by jumping onto the extreme corner of the pedistal and then jumping completely over the pedistal to get to the other side of it.

Yes, scott, the downloads come that way. The author intends intel to be run under Rosetta emulation, he says so in the version history document. Rosetta was good enough for this non demanding game and its limited screen resolution.

skycapt Midnight Mansion 1.1.9 found a problem. Both application is Power PC in folder. The application label as Intel is not a intel but a Power PC.
