What Is Insectoid?

Insectoid is for anyone who enjoyed classic space shooters like Galaga from the 80's. Featuring fast-paced, adrenaline-inducing gameplay, over 50 unique hand-built levels, four custom ships, stunning high-res graphics, and a professional musical score, Insectoid is a retro shooter fan's dream come true.

Collect power-ups and use special weapons, including split ship, laser beam, fireball, and shield, as you fight back swarms of angry insects. Advance behind enemy lines and try to catch the enemy off-guard as you aide human forces in galactic war.

Version History
1.0.0 - Initial releaase (Nov. 4, 2009)
1.0.1 - Defaults to windowed mode on first launch, maximum size 1066x800 on Windows, 1280x960 on Mac. This is to avoid exceeding the graphic's card's capabilities on some Windows systems. An animated cursor is also no longer used, due to problems on some systems. (Dec. 16, 2009)
1.0.2 - Confirms that the current resolution is valid anytime a resolution above 1024x768 is selected. If not confirmed, switches to a lower resolution after 15 seconds. (Dec. 22, 2009.)
1.0.3 - Reduced game's price to $9.99.

- Four ships to choose from, each with their own special abilities.
- Three difficulty levels, each carefully tuned for young kids, average gamers, and hardcore shooter fans.
- High-resolution graphics that look great even fullscreen on a 30" display.
- Play 50 levels, each hand-crafted and balanced by four different designers.
- Battle huge bosses.

- Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7
- 160 MB of free RAM
- 1.6 GHz or faster processor recommended
- OpenGL or DirectX compatible accelerated 3D video card

- Mac OS X 10.4 or higher
- G4, G5 or Intel-based Macintosh
- 160 MB of free RAM
- 1.6 GHz or faster processor recommended
- nVidia or ATI accelerated 3D video card

Insectoid requires a lot of horsepower. If you experience choppy gameplay (especially if your processor speed is lower than 1.8 GHz), quit all other programs before running, especially virus scanning software or anything else that does CPU-intensive tasks in the background.

Purchasing Insectoid

You can try Insectoid for free, but you will only be able to play limited portions of the game. When you purchase the game, you get full access to all 50 levels. Insectoid costs only $9.95. To register, visit our website:

Q: When I buy the game, can I install it on more than one computer?
A: Yes, provided you are the owner of both computers, and you run only one copy of Insectoid at once.

Q: On the Mac version, I noticed there is a 2nd black window behind the main one, when I switch to windowed mode.
A: Yes, this is a minor bug in the engine I am using. This window is harmless, and can be closed if you prefer.

Q: The game won't play past the title screen.
A: If you have a Wacom tablet, try unplugging it first.

Q: I am moving to a new computer. How do I copy over my high scores?

On MacOS X:
1) Go Home
2) Double click Library
3) Double click Application Support
4) Double click ActionSoft
5) Double click Insectoid
6) Copy the "game" folder to your new computer, same path

On Windows XP:
1) From the Start menu, select "My Computer"
2) Double-click "Local Disk (C:)" or whatever your C: drive is named.
3) Double-click "Documents and Settings"
4) Double-click the folder with the name of your computer
5) In the "Address" field at the top of the window, add "\Application Data" to the current path. For instance, if it previous said:
C:\Documents and Settings\Vern
then change it to:
C:\Documents and Settings\Vern\Application Data
and hit return or push Go.
6) Double-click on "ActionSoft"
7) Double-click on "Insectoid"
8) Copy the "game" folder to your new computer, same path

It will be easier to run Insectoid one on the new computer first, then simply find its "game" folder and replace it with your previous one.
On Windows Vista the location is different. You must find %userprofile%\AppData\Local and then continue at step 6. Refer to your OS documentation for instructions on how to find this folder... it may be hidden from view.

********HAPPY TO UPDATE********
They came through and sent the unlock code. Server troubles they said.

Thanks for the recommend. Sadly the version on M.G.S. is only for Leopard and above. Will just have to wait till next year when a Tiger version can be uploaded here. At least Paypal was able to get my money back. No Email or anything from the Dev.

I purchased my insectoid from Mac Game Store at price at $9.95. This a universal game. You can purchased this game from Mac Game Store now but you better buy before they remove all Power PC and universal from their website. I think are planning to go intel 64 bit because apple told all developer remove intel 64 bit.
Mac os 10.14 is coming out this fall. This is last system to run 32 bit and 64 bit. The next system will be mac os 10.15 it be intel 64 bit only.

This page was whipped-up when it recently seemed like the ActionSoft website was history. Not just looking temporarily out of order, some phone company got their 'lines crossed' for about a week. So yeah no hurry to present an upload here now. I'm rooting for Vern to break sales records. But if for example (i.e. I don't know yet, hypothetical) the download author offers now were to no longer support PowerPC, then maybe we could begin archiving unregistered PPC-native version, I have the 2009 (v1.0.2) file describing itself as shareware... thanks scott.
