This game works with: SheepShaver, Basilisk II,

Imperialism is a turn-based strategy game set in a 19th century environment. Develope your country to be a world power by building infrastructure, managing diplomacy with major and minor powers and controlling the military.

"While it lacks tactical realism, this sim provides strategy buffs some compelling management challenges."- Michael Gowan, Macworld

Imperialism was initially released for PC-Win95 in 1997 and brought to the Mac a year later. It sold surprisingly well on both platforms. According to former members of Frog City Software, as of December 1998 the game had topped the 100,000 mark (combined PC/Mac sales). The original sales goal was outsold by more than seven-fold, which was quite an achievement for a turn-based strategy game.

1st download: The English version imaged as a bin/cue pair, compressed with OS X zip. Use Toast to burn a hybrid Mac/PC CD that includes both game and audio partitions.
2nd download: The second download is the French version, complete with audio tracks.
3rd download: The update to version 1.1.7 that corrects some bugs and adds some new features. (see changelog enclosed for details)

Compatibility
Architecture: PPC

Official requirements:

However, the game tends to crash on MacOS 9.2.2. Use MacOS 7.6 through 8.6 instead for better stability. Some users also report success running it on 9.04 and 9.1, though reportedly Imperialism runs very unstable.

Anyone got the final update to 1.1.7 for this one? Seems like archive.org didn't save it. Was distributed as "macimp11.hqx" if that helps anyhow. Nevermind, found it on an old discs from back in the day. Added the update!

I have sunk quite some hours into Imperialism "back in the day" and after having a working 7.6.1 machine I thought I'd give this one a try. Gameplay is still as addictive as it used to be. Same old "just this one more turn" experience that keeps you up until 2 am Smile ...

The one thing I dislike today ( I didn't notice back then) is how un-macish the interface is. This really is a sloppy port. If your resolution is above 640x480 Imperialism runs windowed to the center left. It won't switch resolutions for you. There is no Mac menu bar and in order to save your game you need to save in one of eight slots (really? This feels so DOS-style). Still, the game is entertaining if you love the Civilization recipe. One tip for new players - forget about the tutorials, as they require the manual, which we don't have here as of yet. (anyone?)

Instead simply start a game and use the in game help to read up on certain concepts. And of course, feel free to ask your questions here Smile

Hint about performance: Should you experience sluggish gameplay, make sure you turn File Sharing off! Imperialism doesn't like an active File Sharing. The game had a 1 second lag on all input on my 8600 / 200 running 7.6.1. After I cut off File Sharing, it would run much more fluid.

I still have my original CD, and it is indeed a hybrid game working on both an old Bondi Blue running 8.5/9.1 and from Windows ME all the way up to a Vista laptop.

I will try a few different methods of ripping it to see if I can create a hybrid ISO.

You are right. It is PPC only. I have corrected the page.

If the cover says it's hybrid ... it should be.

Looking carefully at the cover, it can be seen that part of it (the magazine related part) is cleanly printed over a medium quality scan of the original cover.

I really think they were allowed to release only the macintosh version of the game, but that they were too lazy to modify the original cover over which they added there own layout.

Edit : the cover I added to the garden is not the one of my CD, but one I found with google.

Probably a bad rip?

Why ? for the missing PC part ? In that case not, my CD is an original one and I checked that every session and every track was present. I think they just didn't bothered to print customized version of the CD case just because they released a Mac only version for a magazine.

The French version ?? Is there a big "We Surrender" button ?

Yes, I know, English versions are better, but it turns out that most of my softwares are localized versions...

Anyway I do think that, for historical purposes, every locale should be stored along english versions of applications or games.
