Glaurung is a strong chess engine that has been implemented on the three main platforms. It is the direct predecessor of Stockfish, famous for being one of the most powerful chess engine presently.

Glaurung for Mac OS X has its own GUI with two versions of the Glaurung chess engine embedded inside the application. Some of its characteristics: many levels of play (time), support of third-party chess engines through the UCI protocol, read/write games in PGN format, chess engines can be configured, export of game information, support of Chess960, board customizable, etc. Freeware and open-source.

Architecture: PPC x86 (Intel:Mac)

Minimum requirements:
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger or newer
Universal binary application

Tested successfully on MacOSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.

It is still possible to download the Glaurung 2.2 chess engine for different platforms. But without any GUI, however. Disappointing experience for me since I did not succeed to install this new engine (Leopard version) in the Glaurung application for Mac. Don't know why. Sad
