This game works with: SheepShaver, Basilisk II,

From Ambrosia Software's promotional text:

It's 2246, and the galaxy just isn't what it used to be. Spacefaring pirates roam free, civil war rages, and simple traders cheat death to make a living. Welcome to life in the 23rd century!

Escape Velocity offers a rich and open-ended environment that evolves as you play. Over a hundred worlds occupy the galaxy, each with its own technology, alliances, and commodities. As you earn credits and gain fame, Confederation peace keepers and Rebel patriots struggle for power, leaving you in the middle.

Escape Velocity was one of Ambrosia Software's early hits. Its success helped earn the company a name as a major Mac game publisher and contributed to a following of loyal Ambrosia customers.

In EV, the player pilots a starship, going from system to system completing missions, performing trades, or engaging in space battles. The galaxy is populated by numerous AI ships and planets, each with their own attributes and outfits. There are two major plot lines in EV: the Confederacy or the Rebellion.

Though the original game was relatively small, its flexible plug-in architecture allowed fans to create all kinds of different scenarios. The rich ecosystem of EV plug-ins is perhaps the main reason it remained such a popular game, with Ambrosia eventually releasing two more games in the Escape Velocity series.

The download is for the latest (version 1.0.5) installer. If anyone has installers for earlier versions, it would be worth archiving those as well, although the changes are mostly bug fixes for this game.

I have only one thing to say about EV.

"They TRIIIIED to kill me with a forklift!"

And for anyone who doesn't know EV yet, well, just one of the best games ever. Well, be sure of one thing, at least: it's addictive. If you get into it, it's extremely hard to put it down, but damn, is it entertaining.

For anyone playing this, be careful not to do Confed. or Rebel missions unless you are ready to have your character permanently commit to either side. (Each side gives you a different unique item at the end of the final quest.) This is something that, to my knowledge, cannot be undone, so back up your character before you do (or cheat with ResEdit etc.). I don't think buying a Fake ID item at that one pirate planet did the trick, either.
