Egoboo is an action/RPG with roguelike dungeon-crawling features. It is also libre software.

The game incorporates quirky humor combined with RPG tropes, and can be both very challenging and fun. It presents a comical contrast between cutesy characters and violence, blood included.

Happy-looking Kobolds who look like smiling Teddy Bears even when dead on the floor after being stabbed with medieval daggers? Check.
Treasure Chest Mimics? Check.
Bosses? Check.
Burning spell books for the heck of it? Check.
Witty death quotes dedicated to each character class? Check.

You have multiple character classes to choose from and use in various dungeon maps. However, if you want to make a new character, you have to first beat the dungeon corresponding to that character's class in order to keep your character. From there on, you embark on a quest of your own, be it for riches and fame, or to rescue the missing Lord Bishop, ruler of the land. Perhaps with the might of the legendary Sporks of Yore, you just might be able to...

Download #1 includes version 2.3.6. (Recommended for single-player with keyboard+mouse controls.)
Download #2 includes version 2.6.8. (Doesn't seem to work.)
Download #3 includes version 2.7.4. (Recommended for multiplayer and a few other features.)
Download #4 includes version 2.8.2 beta r1571. (Particularly buggy, and 10.5+ only.)
Those 4 versions are all the known Mac OS X versions of the game, found in sourceforge.

Controls and other configurations:

To adjust game controls, some patience is required. You can use mouse, keyboard and up to 2 joysticks, but you need to do it by editing the text file "controls.txt". Particularly camera control and movement are important to confirm and comfortably set.

For joysticks, it is recommended to map buttons etc. to keyboard keys with USB Overdrive (external link). Then on "controls.txt", map the Joystick actions with keyboard keys, and USB Overdrive will map things accordingly. (Be careful not to have the same key being configured on both Joystick A/B/0/1 and Keyboard! Else multiple actions, some of which you may not want, will be executed at once.)

You can adjust further settings, such as custom resolutions and FPS limits (if any), by editing "setup.txt". Some versions provide in-game menus to change these, but some options are not covered in-game, or the menu acts buggily. In short, edit the text file. It's easy and intuitive.

For versions of the game that contain music, it might be a good idea to turn it off. Although subjective, it can get pretty irritating pretty fast, and doesn't quite fit much with the mood of the game.

Version 2.7.4 supports hotseat multiplayer with up to 4 players simultaneously on the same computer, each with a different input device (Keyboard, Mouse, Joystick 0, Joystick 1).

Network multiplayer not tested. May or may not be working.

A bit of Egoboo development history:

This game has had a long development history. First it started off as a DirectX Windows game developed by Aaron and Benjamin Bishop, and possibly a few others, in 1999. Porting it to OpenGL and GNU/Linux started, but eventually the whole project of Egoboo was entirely abandoned.

A team called Zippy-Project picked it up and continued its development. Many features and stages were added, the game got a good polish, it was finally made to use OpenGL instead of DirectX and a GNU/Linux version finally happened. Years later, the project got abandoned again.

Finally, yet another group of people picked it up. But this time, changes in the game's presentation and direction, including the music, started to shift in look and feel a bit too much compared to the original, with many liberties taken, and some poor decisions regarding game design, UI and default settings compared to earlier releases.
However, it was during this time that the game has been at all ported to Mac, both PowerPC and Intel, so that's one thing to be particularly thankful for.

Right now, development has been extremely slow, if not non-existent, for years. Perhaps it's time a 4th group of people picked it up and/or forked it?

Compatibility
Architecture: PPC x86 (Intel:Mac)

OpenGL required.
Universal binaries, compatibility varies per game version.
- Version 2.3.6 works extremely smoothly under both Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and 10.5 Leopard.
- Version 2.6.8 will open under Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and 10.5 Leopard, but the game crashes whenever loading a game map. Unless this is somehow dealt with, this version, so far, seems useless.
- Version 2.7.4 works well under Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and 10.5 Leopard. It has more features than 2.3.6, including music, but runs less smoothly. (Unless settings can work around it, like removing any form of framerate delimiters.)
- Version 2.8.2 beta r1571 will only open on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, but characters are invisible and non-movable. Perhaps reassigning movement keys might fix the latter issue, but not the former.

10.3.9 Panther and earlier have not been tested. Nor any Intel Mac.

This has been a personal favorite of mine since the very very early 2000s, like 2001 or something. I'm glad to learn that the Mac versions are PowerPC compatible. Once I discovered that, I simply HAD to have that title properly archived and backed up here, and introduced to everyone. I think it's a relatively unknown title in the Mac world particularly.

One thing that is not yet mentioned at all in the description is Multiplayer. In the olden days, I played Egoboo with a friend, hotseat style. Way too much fun was had. Should be great to play with one's own son or daughter, or even group of friends.

The reason I haven't mentioned that in the description yet is because I haven't confirmed yet whether or not hotseat gaming is still an option on Mac. I would be very surprised if it wasn't, but it's best to confirm it first.

There was also supposed to be LAN gaming and online gaming, even, but I don't think any of the Mac versions had that. Even on the other platforms, I don't know how far that idea went in the end.
