I totally forgot SheepShaver only goes as far up as Mac OS 9.0.4, nowhere close to 9.2.2 as per my suggestion...

Hopefully Mac OS 8.1 on SheepShaver will do the trick.

I would like to recommend you to follow the guide from Emaculation to create a new blank image & add a Mac OS image first to avoid errors. You will have to quit SheepShaver & relaunch it. This is essential for the emulator to recognize new volumes. Then you can proceed with the Mac OS installation. When that's finished & the emulator has restarted, you can follow the guide from Mike below. If it has not restarted from the desired volume, just select this one in the startup control panel & select restart just like a real Mac.

Would be nice if Mac OS 8.1 would be available as complete version. As far as I know, there is a Mac OS 8.0 CD-ROM install (please use a Mac OS 8 CD ROM image as a "drive" in the SheepShaver settings to get it installed within).

Hi Franky. No sign of him again, so far. I hope he got some use out of it and it got him under way, at last.

I like your slideshow pictures.

@IIGS_User: Thanks mate, I hope they were useful to Alexandr12.

An added bonus(?) This the first time I tried this method in a App/Game page comments section. Interestingly they became associated to the page itself. Meaning, if you view the screenshots in the main page above, my additional slideshow begins after the last screenshot in the main page. So, even if my previous post gets buried deep down in this page, these help pix may still be viewed. I didn't expect this outcome.

Maybe it's just as well that this secondary slideshow is on topic, as they may help someone else in the future. Who knows? Wink

At this point I'd suggest a US version reinstall (as opposed to German) Mac OS 9.2.2, since that's been confirmed to work (not that I think it doesn't work otherwise, but better not try arguing that for now...).

I also kept wondering for quite a while if it's all troll posting, due to lack of proper confirmation that all the previous suggestions were indeed actually followed (though the uploading of screenshots could be something). The OS reinstallations, for example. Also the somewhat imposing, ambiguous, inconsiderate and repetitive tone. But we can never really know, as it could also simply be that is just how someone legitimately is...

@Alexandr12: I have compiled a short walkthrough of steps you can undertake before trying to play this game on SheepShaver. It's of an English version of the Mac OS, but the items involved should be familiar enough for you to go by. This game plays OK on the English Mac OS for me, it may also play on other language versions of the Mac OS. I used Mac OS 8.1 for my SheepShaver tests, but I also ran the game on actual Mac hardware running 9.2.2, so you can run this on any PPC Mac OS from 8.1 to 9.2.2, it seems.

Maus2 runs best on SheepShaver in a window 800x600 - Make this setting change then start the Mac.Click this image for a brief slideshow of the setup.

"Script error. Continue?" on the Mac OS 9. What to do?

SNakApple's picture
by SNakApple - 2019, June 6 - 9:49pm

Thanks Mike for your help with this problem.

@Alexandr12 : As I said before, the "Script error" comes from Director & not the game. Some other games that use Director could encounter this message. In Mac OS, files created are in "Xtras" format, while in Windows, it's ".swf" meaning "ShockWave Files". There is multiple causes with this error, like installing Flash from Adobe for example. This is not necessarily yours. You should try to reinstall your system and the game, but this may or may not work. YMMV (your mileage may vary). You can read this page and eventually download the software for repairing, but I'm not sure that could really solve your problem. If you have tried many times, consider there is no solutions for that game.

I started the game, but again there is an error "Script error. Continue?" only in German. This error appears at the beginning of the game, I click "Yes", but this error is still appears. What to do?

MikeTomTom's picture
by MikeTomTom - 2019, June 6 - 7:56am

@Alexandr12: This will not run on Basilisk II as that does not run PPC apps, for this you need SheepShaver (or actual PPC Mac that can run a classic Mac OS).

It does work OK for me in SheepShaver (see the new screenshots above).

I made a big error in thinking this needs a German OS. As it runs fine for me on actual Mac hardware running Mac OS 9.2.2 and on SheepShaver running Mac OS 8.1 (on Intel Mac and Windows XP) all on US English versions of the Mac OS. It's only the Windows versions of this game that seem to be an impossible problem.

Also of note - this download does not contain a "bin/cue" image. It is actually a simple Mac/Win hybrid ISO image. You can delete the ".cue" file - it is not needed, then rename the "Audio-CD, Maus2.bin" to "Maus2.iso" and it makes more sense.

To play this in SheepShaver on Windows. You should first ensure that the "Maus2.iso" image is locked (Read Only) when it is on your PC.

Add the locked "Maus2.iso" image to SheepShaver's list of disk drives and then start SheepShaver

When SheepShaver boots up you should see the Maus2 icon on your emulated Mac desktop and it's window also opens to show some folder icons and docs.

Before you play the game, make sure that you have QuickTime 4.1.2 or newer installed on the Mac.
QuickTime must be installed before you can run the game.

Click/drag to copy the folder named "Kleine Installation" to inside of the emulated startup disk (the disk containing the Mac System Folder. That is, do not drag it onto the desktop, it needs to first copy over to inside of the startup disk folder.

Once it has copied over, close the CD image window (but leave the mounted Maus2 disk image on the emulated desktop) then locate and open the copied over folder to play the Maus2 game.

When the game window starts, click the top check-mark labeled "automatisch umschalten" and the game should then work OK for you.

I have found that this game plays best in SheepShaver, if you run SheepShaver in a window (not full screen) 800x600 or higher.

I tried on the German version of Mac OS 9 on SheepShaver, when I clicked on the installation, the emulator crashed. I tried on Basilisk ii, on the German version of Mac OS 8.1, the emulator gave an error and crashed.

MikeTomTom's picture
by MikeTomTom - 2019, June 4 - 10:21pm

Yep. The same happens to me. There is no fix for this. It seems to be not useable on Windows OS's that I've tried it on.

And short of getting another copy to test against - which will be a tall order - nothing can be done to fix it, as it is, that I can see.

Are you able to try the Mac version, instead?

I tried, but it does not work.

Well, I can't think of anything else that you can try.

I do not have a German language version of Windows to test running it on.

I tried, but it does not work. What should I do with this problem?

MikeTomTom's picture
by MikeTomTom - 2019, June 3 - 1:37pm

What should I do with this problem?

@Alexandr12: I think I have narrowed down the problem and it is not an easy solution.

I found another time that games which use Macromedia Director as the game engine are very tied to the localized operating system they are designed to run on.

Meaning, if you want to play this German language game you must also have a compatible German operating system to play it on.

I found this with a certain French game which also would not play until I installed it onto a French Operating system. That game, like this one, also has Macromedia Director as the game's engine. You can see this issue is mentioned in the user comments on that page.

So it will not work on your current systems as is. Same goes for me, unless I install a German OS.

Edit: Sorry I got this very wrong. The Mac version runs fine on my US English OS.

The Windows version is just problematic and refuses to play. Mac side OK.

MikeTomTom's picture
by MikeTomTom - 2019, June 3 - 3:45am

I was going to try and see what's the issue if any with this program, but cannot burn it to CD.

ImgBurn (Windows) and Toast T 7 (Mac) both error. Toast reports "Audio-CD, Maus2.cue is not a valid .cue file"

However the ".bin" mounts on classic Mac OS using the Virtual CD Utility (both Mac & Win parts mount). Tried installing on Virtual PC running Win 98 - The minimum install went OK, but game doesn't play, much like described below. Tried the full install, but that hung during the install crashing VPC and the Mac host Tongue

Will try installing it on actual PC hardware running a native XP host next...

And no go for me there either. The .bin file mounts as a virtual CD and both Minimum & Maximum install goes OK. - In both instances I got the "script error" message that Alexandr12 was getting. Clicking "continue" sees it complete the install, but the game itself won't play for me, so I'm pretty much in the same boat with this one.

Thanks for the advice, and if the game immediately at startup and without any errors crashes?

SNakApple's picture
by SNakApple - 2019, May 22 - 5:53pm

I suspect that your problem is not the software from this page, but comes from Director Player. Perhaps you have to uninstall & reinstall this one or it's not compatible...

See the script errors as well, independent of the game. I'm not sure about the issue, but most likely it's an incompatibility between the game engine and later Mac OS versions.

Read my post until the end Smile ... I did not yet re-upload it. I said I will post when done. I need to figure out how to image the full cd instead of the Mac partition. Will take some time, my Toast 6.11 on OSX obviously isn't able to do it, so now checking out a later version. Unfortunately that's a section our uploading Guide misses out pretty much but I've since added some more details.

Edit: It's uploaded as a bin/cue file now. Please try again, I was able to mount, copy to hdd and play the game with no problem!

@Alexandr12 - no idea why that is the case, I was able to mount the image just fine before uploading. however, I'll look into it re-imaging it as a hybrid disc and not just the Mac partition. Just got to figure out how to do it. You may want to try that again. Will post when uploaded.

The game does not work! If you install 8 MB, it crashes, and if it is 340 MB, it writes "Script error. Continue?". Shockwave 8 player is installed, and QuickTime is also installed, but it still does not work. Help!
